Kiss Me, Kate

CELEBRATING

50 YEARS!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

BROADWAY

When Broadway By the Bay approached me to direct Cole Porter’s classic, Kiss Me, Kate in their 50th anniversary season, I jumped at the chance to direct a classic musical in the classic Fox Theatre. Why? To steal a line of Shakespeare’s from the show, “Tis a match!” I was reminded at every rehearsal of just how smart and sophisticated both the book and music are in this show. Porter’s score runs the gamut from vaudeville to jazz, with lyrics full of witty rhymes and sophisticated innuendo. All of which are the perfect match for the bawdy Shakespeare play, The Taming of the Shrew, chronicling the battle between the sexes. For me, the Porter lyrics in the musical are just as clever as the Bard’s verse in the Shrew scenes. Kiss Me, Kate was inspired by the acting couple Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne who, during a 1935 production of The Taming of the Shrew, were said to have fought as much offstage as on. A show within a show, the story centers on a new musical version of The Taming of the Shrew called Kiss Me, Kate being produced, directed and starred in by Fred Graham, who has convinced his ex- wife and former leading lady, Lilli Vanessi, to come back from Hollywood to star opposite him. Like any great Shakespeare comedy, things go quickly awry. In this case, backstage, wreaking havoc onstage. The Taming of the Shrew has often split modern audiences over the treatment of women in the play. For our 2015 sensibilities, we see Kate not as a shrew, but as a woman simply trying to be treated as an equal. In Kiss Me, Kate, as the comedy heats up, so does the battle between the two former lovers, Lilli and Fred. When it comes to the famous fight between Kate and Petruchio, our Kate gives as good as she gets. We see both sets of sparring lovers as perfectly matched. With the delightful show within a show format, we first meet the entire company in the backstage comings and goings as they prepare for opening night. By switching the audience point of view from backstage to onstage, we are really getting two shows. Add one more complicating subplot about a forged IOU and two gangsters who come to collect just before curtain and we have a classic farce which combines one of Shakespeare’s favorite comedies with Porter’s incredible hit-filled score. It has been my great pleasure to ‘Brush Up My Shakespeare’ as the director of Kiss Me, Kate working with the truly talented cast, fantastic creative team and the terrific Broadway By the Bay company. I know I speak for all of us when I say, “Enjoy the show!”
