BAYSTAGES
DIRECTOR'S NOTES I am honored to bring Miss Saigon to Broadway By the Bay. It is a landmark moment for me, both professionally and personally. One of my earliest memories of live theater was attending San Francisco Opera's production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly, on which the story of Miss Saigon is based. At its core, this is Kim’s love story. We first see her fall in love with Chris and hope is empowered by that love and briefly lifted from the poor and tragic conditions of her own life. When the realities of war separate them, we then experience a mother’s fearless and unconditional love for the son she believes deserves a better life than she experienced. She pursues that outcome with a visceral drive and shows us the true strength of the human spirit. I have been inspired by the vast research I have done on the history of this period. There are many untold stories of tragedy, travesty, and triumph, and these truths have informed my vision. I have created a narrative that does not politicize these events, but allows us to see the common humanity not only in these characters, but in the parallels that are present in today’s global society. I have loved getting to know the BBBay audiences through my past work (2015's Les Misérables and 2014's In the Heights), and look forward to sharing this piece with you. It has been my pleasure to collaborate with this outstanding production team, and incredibly talented cast, all of whom have poured their passion into this project. Broadway By the Bay creates an outstanding environment for creativity and collaboration, allowing our artists to truly create a unique experience for you, our audience. Enjoy the show!.
Jasen Jeffrey Director
A NOTE FROM THE INTERIM EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Broadway By the Bay’s 2016 season! I am thrilled to welcome you back to the historic Fox Theatre for the first of our four productions - Miss Saigon, Oklahoma!, Broadway By the Bay - In Concert, and our final musical which will be announced on April 5, 2016 (due to a marketing restriction, we cannot announce the title until then, but we invite you to Be our Guest for this Tale as Old as Time)! We firmly believe that community theatre deeply enriches the lives of those who take an active part in it, as well as those whoa attend the productions. On either side of the footlights, those involved represent a diversity of age, culture and life experience. That diversity, combined with our shared passion, appreciation and belief in the importance of the arts, allow us to create meaningful theatrical experiences. The Bay Area is blessed with a wealth of artistic talent, and we are fortunate to have so many within the BBBay family. The shows you see here at BBBay are not a replica of the Broadway production - they are crafted to showcase our local talent, to compliment our beautiful historic venue, and to honor the source material on which they are based. We engage staff, directors, designers, and artists who are ready to take on this challenge and create a unique experience for you - our dedicated and loyal audience. It is a truly inspiring process to be a part of. It is my honor and privilege to work as your Interim Executive Artistic Director. The community of BBBay inspires me on a daily basis, and I am humbled by the opportunity to serve them, and you. Please do take a moment to stop by our lobby table, meet our lovely staff, and share your thoughts about the show and BBBay. We would love the chance to connect with you!
