DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote Oklahoma! in 1941 as an adaptation of a musical written ten years earlier called Green Grow the Lilacs, which told the story of people living in the Oklahoma territories in the early 1900s. To make the show more authentic, Hammerstein used the lyrics to help amplify the story instead of diverting from it; an idea unique to its time. Oklahoma! then became the genesis of a new type of musical, one that fused the music into the narrative function which eventually gave birth to the modern musical we know today. When looking at the real-world version of Oklahoma in 1906, we can observe a period of major transition in America. Oklahoma, being originally promised to Native Americans as sovereign land, was being bought off piece by piece and made available to white settlers in land runs starting as early as 1889. The real Oklahoma was anything but civil, with both Native Americans and white settlers fighting viscously over property rights, and no real law enforcement to speak of, the term “wild west” was no exaggeration. The reality of living in an unconquered land with constant subjection to the elements meant the people of the Territories had to be tough. You had to be at least 21-years-old to participate in the landgrab, which tells us that no one under the age of seventeen in our show would have been born in the territories by conventional legal means. The road to Oklahoma civilization was hazardous, and could not have been completed by anyone who wasn’t severely motivated by the thirst for a new life in a new land. To continue Hammerstein’s vision and breathe further authenticity into the characters of our show, I thought it only appropriate to give them fair motivation - even the women. Ado Annie is a woman found living without the traditional values and restrictions of puritanical America and therefore has room to live a life more akin to her desires. Laurey and Aunt Eller are two land-owning women living without male authority. This tells us that they need to have an air of independence of fortitude. This reality influences the way she interacts with male suitors Curly and Jud. A hardy Laurey isn’t the type of woman who can afford a careless relationship with a dangerous man, so our production takes a thoughtful look at this romance. We have gone out of our way to make each and every character within our Oklahoma rich, complex and entirely three dimensional. We hope that this will not only honor the original intention of the piece but allow for new and exciting perspective. Thank you very much, and enjoy the show!

RICHARD RODGERS & OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Book, Music,
L y r i c s ) After long and highly distinguished career is with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 18951960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a twenty-five year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern.) Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Pipe Dream (1955), Flower Drum Song (1958) and The Sound of Music (1959). Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote one musical specifically for the big screen, State Fair, and one for television, Cinderella. Collectively, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals earned thirty-four Tony Awards, fourteen Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards.
