A NEW MUSICAL COMEDY book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa based on characters created by Charles Addams
WELCOME! “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” - Albert Einstein Imagination is a critical component of child development, but very rarely will you find it on any class syllabus, report card, or academic standard. Creative thinkers and trailblazers fill the pages of history textbooks yet we don’t provide our youth with the artistic curriculum necessary to foster the creativity that will help them grow into leaders and trailblazers themselves. The benefits are well known - education not only cultivates the imagination, it also helps students perform better in school, boost confidence, and foster empathy and tolerance. Students who participate in theatre arts education benefit significantly in vocabulary, language, and creative development. Starting in eighth grade, students with high involvement in the arts were 9% more likely to have a high reading proficiency than students without the arts. This difference grows to 20% by the time they reach twelfth grade. Theatre arts provide a safe environment where students develop the confidence needed to thrive in a complex world. By the time students arrive at twelfth grade, statistics show there is a significant increase in positive self-concept and confidence for students with exposure to theatre arts compared to students without this exposure. The arts don't only help students connect with themselves, they help students connect with one another. In one study, students were asked if it was “OK” to make a racist remark. Forty percent more students without an arts education said this would be “OK” than their artist counterparts. An arts education provides the foundation for the future leaders, innovators, and socially aware individuals who will create the world we hope to one-day see. These are some of the reasons why our conservatory program is central to the Berkeley Playhouse mission. The more Bay Area students we reach, the more we contribute to the creativity, empathy, and potential of our future trailblazers.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR'S NOTE R E C O M M E N D S
THE ESSENTIAL STEPHEN SONDHEIM
These 30 cast album tracks make a great introduction. (masterworksbroadway.com)
Nominated in 2010 for the Tony Award for Best Original Score and the Outer Critic's Circle Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics, Andrew Lippa's rendition of The Addams Family is full of style, wit and depth. His musical palette is all encompassing in its purview. From his romantic, Latin-inspired “When You're an Addams,” “Wednesday's Growing Up” and “Not Today,” the vaudevillian “Let's Not Talk About Anything Else But Love” and “Full Disclosure,” the contemporary pop sounds of “Pulled” and “Crazier Than You,” to the almost operatic finale, “Move Toward the Darkness,” Lippa's score is ambitious and his melodies seek to define character and advance plot development. He paints with softer, more melodic colors in “What If” and “Happy/Sad” and, in a tour de force, masterfully blends the variant styles in the epic “One Normal Night” to great effect. He strikes all the right chords in his score, often finding poignant nuance in key points of underscoring. In the end what you have is a brilliant score with contagious tunes that will leave you humming out the door. Enjoy!
