To Kill a Mockingbird is a special show for Berkeley Playhouse, as it marks the first non-musical play in our nine-year history. We chose this new American classic, published in 1960 by the late Harper Lee, not only because it fits in with our mission for intergenerational theatre, but because the story and the core issues it addresses are still deeply resonate with our community today. Even as we take on our first play, music still plays an integral role in our production. To Kill a Mockingbird features an original score by Don Tieck, keeping true to our belief in music as a universal language that humanizes us and transcends differences around us.

Scout and Atticus’ iconic story is poignantly timeless. It is about feeling empathy for others, standing up against injustice and being brave enough to do what’s right. Racial inequality, an issue still prevalent in the world today, is addressed frankly between a daughter and her father. As you walk in the shoes of Scout, Atticus and Tom, we hope these issues and their relevance are tangible and spark meaningful conversations.

/BerkeleyPlayhouse

On top of being one of Director Daren A.C. Carollo’s and Founding Artistic Director Elizabeth McKoy’s favorite plays, To Kill a Mockingbird is an important work, taught in schools across the country. With Harper Lee’s passing this past February, we are newly reminded of the significance of this powerful piece, and are honored to share it with our community.
