BOARD OF ADVISORS

I first read this play in 2011 and I was so intrigued by the intricate interweaving of the various periods of time. Only on the stage can the past, the present and the future be revealed in the same moment. I believed that the Dragon stage was primed and ready to play with time and to shed a little light on the human condition. Unfortunately, the rights to produce the play were restricted for us. Time and time again we tried, and were denied, but I was not going to give up. The exploration of man’s relationship with the planet and generations to come is important to us all, and what better way to do so than in this theatrically compelling way that only an intimate live theatre setting can. I hope you will be moved as I have been throughout this process. I’m so thrilled to be able to finally present When the Rain Stops Falling to you, the Dragon audience. Oh, and look out for flying fish. ☺

DIRECTOR’S NOTES SPOILER ALERT: If you want to form your own opinions about the show’s themes and impressions, please read after the play.

…”punishing the children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation…” - Exodus 20:5 What does it mean to be a part of the generations that live under the curse of the “sins of the father”? How does one overcome the life sentence imposed upon them by forces completely external to themselves? And what does it mean to be a member of the 4th generation…or the 5th? These are the questions that inspired me when I first read Andrew Bovell’s rich and complicated script. It was both deeply theatrical and profoundly universal. The themes of inheritance and the effect of one person’s actions on the succeeding generations resonated with me. How many of the patterns of my family’s past will I inherit and pass down, and how many can I change and redeem? Andrew Bovell was originally writing the play in conjunction with an Australian visual artist, Hossein Valamanesh, in order to explore the issues of humanity and the environment. As the work evolved, the two themes of inherited burdens both environmental and familial began to be revealed. Though not a purely politically environmental piece, the metaphor of the weather serves both as reminder of the relentless nature of…well…nature, and a more direct indictment of our own effect on the environment on a personal level. How much can we control? What kind of physical world will our heirs inherit? As you can see, I think about the play more in terms of the questions it asks of me, and you. In asking the questions together, we can journey together towards the answers…and that’s where the experience is richest -in the journey towards understanding. As we rehearsed the show, we discussed things like “what is the oldest thing you have in your house that was handed down to you from someone else in your family” or “what is a favorite family expression”? As we shared these things with each other, we realized that we might actually need to share them with the future, too. This is why, enclosed in this program, is an insert for you to go home and write down “the story of this thing…” Tell the story of the oldest thing you have that you may pass down through the generations to come. Write it on this card. Secure it to the thing. And send it forward with love.
