WELCOME! If the Lucie Stern had seatbelts, I would advise you to fasten them at this time, because you’re going to have a hard time staying in your seats during this electrifying production of Million Dollar Quartet, the first of our 87th season. We’re thrilled to have you join us! I was approached about producing this show over a year ago, and at the time I was only vaguely familiar with the title. I did know, however, that it was a high energy show with a heart, and needed a cast that not only looks and sounds like these rock ’n’ roll icons, but also played their own instruments. I laughed it off at first, thinking that kind of talent would be hard to find in the Bay Area. Boy, was I wrong. We had a large number of people audition for this production, all with jaw-dropping skill, and we found a group of six actors who work so well together, you’d think they were band mates since middle school. I should have known not to doubt the amazing local talent pool. With that, I want to express my undying gratitude to the local people who come together to create our productions. We have a wealth of knowledge and interests in the Silicon Valley, but our theatre community is second to none. As a company that uses only local talent in all areas of production, we are truly fortunate to be where we are. With that said, there is always room for more, so if you have any interest in joining us onstage or off (and have the time of your life while you’re at it), please contact us and join our production family. We are a company for the community, by the community, and we couldn’t do it without you.

MISSION STATEMENT

Greg Zema as Johnny Cash, Jaake Margo as Elvis Presley, Tarif Pappu as Carl Perkins, and Jessica LaFever as Dyanne.

While Million Dollar Quartet tells the story of one magical winter day in Memphis, Tennessee in 1956, when four soon-to-be rock ’n’ roll icons jammed together in Sun Studios, it also tells the story of another essential rock star. Sam Phillips, known as “the man who invented rock ’n’ roll,” was the studio alchemist, the linchpin who brought them all together – but the very reason Phillips started Sun had a larger goal than just good music. When he opened his doors in 1950, he wanted to create a studio where everyone was welcome to record – no small feat in the segregated South. “I knew the physical separation of the races – but I knew the integration of their souls,” Phillips told his biographer Peter Guralnick. He brought people together through music his whole career. Sam Phillips was a visionary, an explorer, a rebel who went against society’s norms as often as possible – something that could be said of other pioneers of rock music. Phillips considered it his mission “to open up an area of freedom within the artist himself, to recognize that individual’s unique quality and then to find the key to unlock it.” And he did that with every artist who walked through his door. Certainly, the magnificent music that was played that day in the ’50s was a true reflection of the unique qualities and genius of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis, but it was also a true reflection of the genius and the soul of Sam Phillips. Million Dollar Quartet pays tribute to these musical innovators who transformed rhythm and blues into rock ‘n’ roll. But, at the heart of the show are these enduring songs, which have influenced just about every popular song that has been written since. If these songs weren’t the soundtrack to your life, they were probably the inspiration for the songs on the soundtrack to your life.

PRODUCTION NOTES A Tuesday night shortly before Christmas 1956. Four legends – Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley – gathered at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where they’d launch their careers. Word soon leaked out of an impromptu jam session. A newspaper man who was there wrote, “This quartet could sell a million.” Soon, they were dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet. This was their only performance, a cultural flashpoint that caught rock ‘n’ roll at the moment of creation. Sun Records owner Sam Phillips discovered and produced the Million Dollar Quartet. That’s why he, together with Presley and Lewis, were among the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame’s charter inductees. Perkins and Cash soon joined them. Unlike other producers at that time, Phillips took an active role in recording, encouraging, and coaxing his young, untested artists to reach deep within themselves. He began by recording blues singers like B.B. King and Ike Turner. Later on, he was the first to sign Roy Orbison and Charlie Rich. In his rudimentary, one-room studio, Phillips looked for innovation, not imitation. The music he recorded transformed the cultural landscape of the twentieth century, and its reverberations are still felt today.
