FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A Tony-winning Broadway hit with a brilliant jazz score by Cy Coleman and a book by M*A*S*H writer genius Larry Gelbart, City of Angels has unfathomably not been revived on Broadway in twenty-five years. Why do it now? First off, it is a theatrical tour de force, pitting the two worlds of black and white film noir against the technicolor of early fifties Hollywood. With forty scenes and thirtysix characters, played in our production by eleven actors, it is a worthy challenge to test the mettle of our growing company. And you know how we enjoy a theatrical challenge. The show also holds hidden riches still relevant to our current lives in this story of a naïve novelist brought out to Hollywood to turn his novel into a screenplay. I believe the noir masterpieces of Dashiell Hammet and John Cain were inspired by the European existential movement which proclaimed that we are alone on this corrupt planet with no one to guide us, cast adrift without a moral compass. The noir protagonists, so flawed and cynical are truly existential. In our spiritually challenged times, these noir heroes still resonate for us as we witness them blunder their way towards moral clarity. City of Angels also explores the conflict between art and commerce. How is art even possible in the commodified American marketplace, where mass-produced culture creates a wasteland of worthless detritus, and where working artists are constantly faced with the temptation to sell out for “lots of dough.” Stine, the young novelist of City of Angels, confronts this conflict head-on when he is plunged into the Sodom and Gomorrah of Hollywood. The conniving, materialistic Buddy Fidler offers Stine $50,000 to turn his treasured opus into cinematic pulp. This timeless American conflict between art and commerce still festers in our consciousness. City of Angels also addresses the inherent conflict between the heart and the mind. The pursuit of art to develop our hearts and compassion is kicked to a distant last on the priority list of our educational institutions. With such disparity between developing the mind over the heart, we risk creating bifurcated minds that cannot find the heart of the matter. City of Angels gives us two protagonists, Stone (heart) and Stine (mind) and we watch them struggle to solve their problems in isolated worlds without access to their other half. Stone only “feels” and is repeatedly a victim of his heart’s impulses. Stine, by contrast, makes all his decisions with his head. They battle at the end of Act I in “You’re Nothing Without Me,” to prove whether heart or mind should be ascendant. But by the end of the play, both creator and created learn that the mind is crippled without heart, and the heart is forever lost without the mind. They and we learn that they are, indeed, nothing without the other.

SAN FRANCISCO PLAYHOUSE
n. People who embrace the wanderlust of Sonoma Wine Country.
Just 45 minutes north of San Francisco.
was founded by Bill English and Susi Damilano in 2003. It was described by the New York Times as "a company that stages some of the most consistently high-quality work around" and deemed "ever adventurous" by the Bay Area News Group. Located right in the heart of the Union Square theater district, San Francisco Playhouse is the city’s premiere Off-Broadway company, an intimate alternative to the larger more traditional Union Square theater fare. San Francisco Playhouse provides audiences the opportunity to experience professional theater with top-notch actors and worldclass design in a setting where they are close to the action. The company has received multiple
World-class wineries, redwood forests and beautiful ocean coastline.
awards for overall productions, acting and design, including the SF Weekly Best Theatre Award and the Bay Guardian’s Best Off-Broadway Theatre Award. KQED/NPR recently praised the company: "San Francisco Playhouse is one of the few theaters in the Bay Area that has a mission that actually shows up on stage. Artistic Director Bill English’s commitment to empathy as a guiding philosophical and aesthetic force is admirable and by living that mission, fascinating things happen onstage." Presenting a diverse range of plays and musicals, San Francisco Playhouse produces new works as well as re-imagining classics, "making the edgy accessible and the traditional edgy." The company’s 2012-2013 season marked its 10th anniversary, and as it moved to a newly renovated venue, the San Francisco Chronicle raved: "On the verge of opening its tenth season, the company that lived a hand-to-mouth existence for its first few years has become the little playhouse that could. It quickly established a reputation for attracting some of the Bay Area's best acting and directing talent, as well as for its exciting play choices. And with its bold Sandbox Series, it's become a player in developing new works as well." San Francisco Playhouse is committed to providing a creative home and inspiring environment where actors, directors, writers, designers and theater lovers converge to create works that celebrate the human spirit. ♦ Member of United Scenic Artists
