FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Though there have been three wildly successful revivals since, this American musical theatre masterpiece was originally produced in 1983. But like She Loves Me, the other musical to grace our stage this season, it has a long lineage. Originally a French play by Jean Poiret, La Cage was adapted into the great French-Italian film of the same name in 1978. It also became the Robin Williams-Nathan Lane comedy The Birdcage in 1996. Ofttold stories seem to have something in common – the universal theme of the lengths to which parents will go to promote their offspring’s happiness. La Cage aux Folles hits a triple bull's-eye on our mission at San Francisco Playhouse. To uplift our spirits, there is no better recipe than La Cage, with the catchy tunes of Jerry Herman and the wicked book of Harvey Fierstein to install a permanent grin on our faces. The young and the middle-aged love songs are surefire heartstring-tuggers, and the story of how far a “mother” will go to support a son is sure to ennoble us all. Powered by four great production numbers, La Cage will also have all but the stone-hearted tapping toes and clapping hands. But La Cage digs deeper than the smile on our faces. It challenges us to fulfill part two of our mission, to deepen self-awareness. Watching rehearsal after rehearsal of La Cage, I found myself unable to avoid all the ways in which I don’t always live up to the song “I Am What I Am.” Life is a perpetual struggle to live by the heart’s yearning. We know deep inside who we are capable of being, but we look the other way as we struggle for survival, power, wealth, and fame. All the while, our heart urges us to look inside to what our truth speaks and begs us to have the courage to live up to our convictions. We are challenged by these “birds of a feather,” who “will” be themselves, despite persecution and marginalization. Of course, this summer – perhaps more than many summers before – our American culture is challenged to protect our constitutional guarantees against rampant racism and prejudice against those with differing sexual and gender identities. All around us are those who would roll back progress and impose restrictions on who may immigrate, who may adopt, who may use which bathroom. The number of hate crimes has exploded, creating a nightmarish vision of horrors past. Now more than ever, to nurture compassionate community, we need to honor all humans’ rights to sing, “We are what we are,” and “I am what I am” with pride.

JERRY HERMAN (Music & Lyrics)
wrote Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles - home to some of the most popular, most often-performed and most successful musical hero(in)es of all time, and those shows have given Jerry the distinction of being the only composer-lyricist in history to have had three musicals that ran more than 1,500 consecutive performances on Broadway. His first Broadway show was Milk and Honey (1961), followed by Hello, Dolly! (1964), Mame (1966), Dear World (1969), Mack & Mabel (1974), The Grand Tour (1979), La Cage aux Folles (1983), and Jerry’s Girls (1985). Mrs. Santa Claus (1996) was a CBS television special starring Angela Lansbury. Showtune, a revue of his life’s work, is performing in regional theaters around the country and two of Jerry's classic songs are the emotional highlights of the hit Disney-Pixar film WALL-E. His string of awards and honors includes multiple Tony Awards, Grammys, Olivier Awards, Drama Desk Awards, the Johnny Mercer Award, the Richard Rodgers Award, the Oscar Hammerstein Award, the Frederick Lowe Award, the Songwriters Hall of
Fame, the Theatre Hall of Fame and most recently the Kennedy Center Honors.
BILL ENGLISH (Director, Artistic
Director) is a co-founder of San Francisco Playhouse, and in fourteen years with Susi Damilano, has guided its growth from a bare-bones storefront to the second-largest theatre in San Francisco. He designed the first theatre space at 536 Sutter and personally reconfigured a barn-like 700-seat hall to our currently gracious and intimate 200-seat venue. Along the way he has served as director, actor, set and sound designer, winning San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominations or awards in all those categories. Bill is also an accomplished musician and builder. Milestone accomplishments include bringing Pulitzer-winner Stephen Adly Guirgis to the Bay Area by directing three of his plays, commissioning twelve playwrights including Theresa Rebeck, Aaron Loeb, Lauren Gunderson, Lauren Yee, and Christopher Chen, and developing world premieres from workshops to Sandbox to our Main Stage to Off-Broadway (including the OffBroadway transfers of Ideation and Bauer) and presenting the very first production of Grounded by George Brant which later played Public Theatre. He coined the phrase “the empathy gym” and it drives everything at the Playhouse.
DAVE DOBRUSK Y ( M u s i c
Director) is proud to have been associated with San Francisco Playhouse for eleven years. Credits here include City of Angels, Company, Into the Woods, Camelot, My Fair Lady, Man of La Mancha (SFBATCC Award) and Putting It Together. Dave is also the resident music director at 42nd Street Moon where he has played, conducted, arranged and orchestrated
dozens of "uncommon" musicals since 1996 including No, No, Nanette, New Girl in Town, The Most Happy Fella, The Boys From Syracuse, the world premiere of Scrooge in Love! with Jason Graae, Nick & Nora, The Boy Friend, Do I Hear a Waltz? with Emily Skinner, It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman, Call Me Madam, Out of This World, Once Upon a Mattress, Can-Can, Paint Your Wagon (SFBATCC Award) and cast recordings of Cole Porter's Leave It to Me and Jerome Kern's The Cabaret Girl. Other Bay Area credits include Road Show, Marry Me a Little and tick, tick... Boom! (Theatre Rhinoceros), Violet and Side Show (TheatreWorks) and The Boy Friend and In This House (Playhouse West, SFBATCC Award), The Wedding Singer and Rent (University of San Francisco), and numerous cabaret appearances. Dave is from Albuquerque and was educated at Oberlin Conservatory.

SAN FRANCISCO PLAYHOUSE
was founded by Bill English and Susi Damilano in 2003. It was described by the New York Times as "a company that stages some of the most consistently high-quality work around" and deemed "ever adventurous" by the Bay Area News Group. Located right in the heart of the Union Square theater district, San Francisco Playhouse is the city’s premier Off-Broadway company, an intimate alternative to the larger more traditional Union Square theater fare. San Francisco Playhouse provides audiences the opportunity to experience professional theatre with top-notch actors and world-class design in a setting where they are close to the action. The company has received multiple awards for overall productions, acting and design, including the Best Theatre Award from SF Weekly and the Best OffBroadway Theatre Award from the San Francisco Bay Guardian. KQED/ NPR recently praised the company: "San Francisco Playhouse is one of the few theaters in the Bay Area that has a mission that actually shows up on stage. Artistic Director Bill English’s commitment to empathy as a guiding philosophical and
aesthetic force is admirable and by living that mission, fascinating things happen onstage." Presenting a diverse range of plays and musicals, San Francisco Playhouse produces new works as well as re-imagining classics, "making the edgy accessible and the traditional edgy." The company’s 2012-2013 season marked its tenth anniversary, and as it moved to a newly renovated venue, the San Francisco Chronicle raved: "On the verge of opening its tenth season, the company that lived a hand-to-mouth existence for its first few years has become the little playhouse that could. It quickly established a reputation for attracting some of the Bay Area's best acting and directing talent, as well as for its exciting play choices. And with its bold Sandbox Series, it's become a player in developing new works as well." San Francisco Playhouse is committed to providing a creative home and inspiring environment where actors, directors, writers, designers and theatre lovers converge to create works that celebrate the human spirit. sfplayhouse.org
