FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Greetings! Kudos and deepest thanks to all of our patrons and donors who helped make our 2016 Year End Fundraising Campaign a success! Your unwavering generosity continues to support The Stage’s award-winning productions, new commissions, and educational partnerships. The new year kicks off with the electrifying centerpiece of our 34th season – Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced – which coincides with our nation moving into a new political era. Akhtar’s themes are the lightning rods of today’s headlines, illuminating the junctures of global theologies, economics, and cultures. Disgraced examines the seismic shocks affecting the inherent complexities of chasing the 20th century American Dream amidst globalization and the treacheries of racism in the 21st Century. Written in 2006, Disgraced has evolved in its relevance and importance which, at this moment in history, has compounded. Ayad Akhtar said, "There's this thing of the Disgraced title as the disgrace of public discourse in our time... I didn't know that’s where we were headed... but it is weird that that's where we ended up." We hope the play generates a dialogue, carrying the conflicted and sometimes vicious sensibilities of this work into insightful and open discussion, moving towards diverse examination and understanding. Ayad Akhtar was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Disgraced. The play has become a phenomenon as the most produced work of the 2016-2017 season with over fifty productions on or scheduled to be on American stages. Disgraced also holds the honor of being the first play to feature a Muslim protagonist denouncing Islam since Othello. So, where are we headed? Where does the discourse take us? Where do we draw the line on our fears and open our hearts to the pure embrace?

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Raised in Milwaukee, Ayad Akhtar became interested in writing in high school when he discovered European Modernism, a philosophical movement focused on self-consciousness or self-reference. While a theatre major at Brown University, Akhtar formed a love for acting and continued his studies with Jerzy Grotowski for a year after graduation. Ayad earned his MFA in film directing from the Columbia University School of the Arts. While at Columbia, he began to find his voice as an artist co-writing the 2005 film The War Within, an Independent Spirit Award nominee about an ordinary man radicalized into becoming a terrorist. He then began work on his anthology, publishing his first critically acclaimed novel, American Dervish, in 2012. It was described by the New York “I am not consciously trying Times as "self-assured and effortlessly told,” and chronicled the coming-of-age of a Pakistani-American boy, Hayat, growing up to engage the ideas of our in Milwaukee. Also in 2012, Ayad returned to the theatre to write time. The ideas that unfold on his first play, Disgraced, which won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for that stage are not about the Drama and a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Play. That same year he had two subsequent plays produced: The Who & news cycle for me. They’re The What, which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in February, about the world we’re living and The Invisible Hand at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis in March.
in every day”
All these successes are a testament to his voice as a writer confronting one of the most divided issues of this century. He has emerged as a voice for Islamic America, pulling from his own experiences to construct pieces that speak to the everyday struggles in our post 9/11 society. He has also faced opposition from his community resulting from his negative depiction of Muslim-Americans.
- Ayad Akhtar
His newer works explore economic tones, digging into the effects of capitalist society. He is currently writing the pilot for Capital, an HBO series that follows the morphing of the global economy. His new play, Junk: The Golden Age of Debt, produced this past summer at La Jolla Playhouse, focuses on a corporate takeover set in the 1980s. Ayad currently serves as the resident playwright at Arena Stage, furthering his anthology and legacy as a vital voice of modern American theatre. - Clinton Williams 2

ABOUT THE PLAY In our current political and social state, filled with intolerance, a play like Disgraced seems even more relevant to understanding the things that divide us. Ayad Akhtar has constructed a piece of theatre that illuminates our cultural assumptions and our perceptions of identity. With its focus on sociopolitical themes, Disgraced humanizes cultural and racial prejudices, revealing their effects on society. Religion and politics are said to be two topics never to be discussed at a dinner party. Disgraced completely ignores this staple of social grace by crafting its plot in such a setting directly around these very subjects. It thrusts us into a hotbed of conflicting viewpoints from multiple cultural backgrounds, but Akhtar has structured the play in such a way that it does not blatantly choose a side. Instead, he allows each of his characters to exist not as a symbol but as an individual. The characters are immensely complex, falling directly into their respective societal stereotypes, while at the same time rebelling against those confining labels. Each character is an amalgamation of cultural identity, individuality, and societal construct. In other words, they are humans. Presenting the characters as flawed individuals allows the dialogue to lift their polite veneers and open a brutally raw discussion of perceived and internalized biases. Touching on one of the most divided topics of this century, Disgraced highlights the struggle of the Muslim-American experience post 9/11, while unabashedly penetrating the depths of self-judgment. Akhtar says "Post-9/11, folks who looked like me became very visible. Life changed. I, and a lot of people like me, felt differently after that. Like Amir, the fact of being Muslim, whether religious or cultural, became a significant fact that could not be avoided." As one of the few plays featuring a Pakistani man as the lead character, Disgraced has a vital role in the discussion of Islam in America. It has been described as “an engaging snapshot of the challenge for upwardly mobile Islamic Americans in the post-9/11 4

age." Amidst sweeping generalizations and Islamophobic attitudes, it seems almost impossible for the moderate Islamic view to be heard. Akhtar questions this by offering two contrary perspectives through the characters of Amir and Abe. Both are struggling to unite their faith with societal perception. Akhtar said in an interview with NPR, "The process of becoming American has to do with rupture and renewal — rupture from the Old World, renewal of the self in a new world. That self-creative capacity is what it means to be American in many ways, and I think that part of that rupture is the capacity to make fun of yourself and the capacity to criticize yourself." Artistic Director Randall King is reminded of the title character in our production of RFK. "My thoughts go to Bobby Kennedy, the day after Dr. King’s assassination, making the beautiful and powerful speech ‘On the Mindless Menace of Violence.’ In it, he addresses indifference, fiercely imploring for human understanding and acceptance: When you teach a man to hate and fear his brother, when you teach that he is a lesser man because of his color or his beliefs or the policies he pursues, when you teach that those who differ from you threaten your freedom or your job or your family, then you also learn to confront others not as fellow citizens but as enemies to be met not with cooperation but with conquest, to be subjugated and mastered.
- Robert F. Kennedy Cleveland City Club, April 5, 1968
“These words resonate more today than ever before. It is our mission to stimulate thought and generate dialogue, to bring diverse perspectives and varied views to the issues of the 21st century.” Although it won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Disgraced has been met with some resistance from the Muslim-American community. Some believe that the characters paint an unflattering picture of the Islamic faith further perpetuating societal bias. In response to some of this criticism, Akhtar says; "An artist's job is to tease and poke and question the larger racial, ethnic, religious and social conscience and in the process to provoke questions that lead to new practices and new way of seeing." His goal, it would appear, is not to simply highlight experiences. Rather he probes deeper, questioning our assumptions of one another. Instead of telling us WHAT to think Disgraced openly challenges HOW we are thinking. Given our current cultural and political landscape this might be the best thing that we can do for ourselves as a nation. - Clinton Williams
DIRECTOR'S NOTE The new administration’s talk of building a wall to curtail immigration and the creation of a Muslim directory raises complex questions that are not easy to fix. However, we can start to understand the process of integrating what we do know and what we don’t. This is why it seems extremely relevant to be producing Disgraced, which deals with thorny questions surrounding religion, race, and loss of identity in our contemporary world. There is a conversation taking place today, asking questions such as: “How did we all let it get to this point?” Disgraced suggests that through dialogue this problem can evolve. However, to say that there are quick solutions requires a much deeper conversation to take place. Making quick decisions not rooted in unity is the opposite of what we need. I recently had the immense pleasure of working with Ayad Akhtar on his production of The Invisible Hand at A Contemporary Theatre (ACT) in Seattle. We are very fortunate to have this wonderfully brave playwright whose deep insight exposes the unsightly parts of his characters.
image: quinn norton / wikimedia.org
Ayad points to the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald: “The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” Finding a way for us all to expand our way of seeing multiple sides of an issue and still remain able to have a dialogue with one another. Through the ritual and collective experience, the theatre is a place where we can create a space for this much needed dialogue to being.
