An election looms before us. The country is divided with opposing views. As many are surprised when those they know do not agree with their opinion, the power of perspective is more evident than ever. Gaius Julius Caesar himself said, “What we wish, we readily believe, and what we ourselves think, we imagine others think also.” What better time for Silicon Valley Shakespeare to produce Julius Caesar for the first time than in this election year, as perspectives vastly vary as voters head to the polls? Shakespeare was a master at holding the mirror up to nature, and Julius Caesar is a perfect example of that. We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring you Richard Farrell’s fresh and poignant take on this political thriller and hope that it’s unsettling story leads to thought provoking conversation. In contrast to political turmoil, a story of friendship, love, and honor can be a reminder to us of hope and the strength in following one’s convictions. The Three Musketeers is all of this and more as it comes to life on the SVS stage under the skillful direction of our very own Executive Director, Doug Brook. This tale has continued to be exceedingly popular throughout the years, not only for its compelling adventures, but for the feeling of unity it brings its audience with its famed, “All for one, and one for all!” As plans for next season are already brewing, our aim is to continue to bring our audience fresh interpretations of the classics that are artistically interesting and thought provoking. Deception, loyalty and discovery will take the stage as we delve into the theme, “Oh what a tangled web we weave…” in 2017. For our Free Shakespeare in the Park, we bring you the comedic The Merry Wives of Windsor with a reality TV spin, directed by SVS’s very own Shakespeare savant, Doll Piccotto. In Sanborn Park, we will explore “what dreams may come” with an all-female production of Hamlet, helmed by yours truly. In the spirit of innovation, our non-Shakespeare production tells an original tale of everyone’s favorite detective in Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club. Playwright Jeffery Hatcher places Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous characters into a story inspired by a Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale, making for a thrilling ride. Needless to say, we are excited for the intrigue that 2017 will bring! Enjoying the conversation that art fosters,

JULIUS CAESAR ABOUT THE PLAY: There are no villains in this play. Though each character has his own self-interest, and a readiness to use or do away with the other characters, all think they are doing so for the honor or glory or persistence of Rome.
- from Rome and Rhetoric by Garry Wills
Shakespeare focuses the plot by, on the one hand, giving greater and more continuous prominence to the Plebians than Plutarch does (Shakespeare’s primary source), thereby stressing a socio-political polarization and underlining the disastrous consequences of selfinterest, if not the unreliability and uncontrollability of all human desires; and, on the other hand, by contemplating the public and private levels with the portentous inscrutability of the supernatural both in and outside Rome. - from the New Cambridge Shakespeare edition of Julius Caesar

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR
The great error consists in supposing that poetry is an unnatural form of language. We should all like to speak poetry at the moment when we truly live… It is not song that is the narrow or artificial thing, it is conversation that is a broken and stammering attempt at song.

- from Five Types by G.K. Chesterton
SYNOPSIS: Julius Caesar has returned triumphant from the war with Pompey but is warned by a soothsayer during the celebration to beware the Ides of March. Cassius and Brutus discuss their fears that Caesar’s ambition is to become a supreme ruler, although they know that Caesar has refused the crown. Conspirators against Caesar begin to arise.
HAMLET SANBORN PARK SARTOGA | 7.28 • 9.01
Caesar’s wife Calpurnia, frightened by prophetic dreams, persuades Caesar not to go to the Capitol on the Ides of March. One of the conspirators, however, convinces Caesar that he will seem afraid if he doesn’t go. Caesar, disregarding all warnings, goes to the Capitol where the conspirators kill him. Caesar’s friend Marc Antony convinces the conspirators to let him speak at Caesar’s funeral following Brutus’ speech. Brutus justifies the conspiracy to the citizens and receives their support, but Antony’s speech rouses them against the conspirators and Brutus and Cassius flee. Antony forms a triumvirate with Octavius Caesar and Lepidus and they form an army and plan the deaths of the conspirators. Brutus and Cassius join forces and agree to fight together at Phillipi. During the battle, Cassius believes they are defeated and orders his servant to kill him. A further battle leads to Brutus’ defeat, and he also commits suicide. Antony and Octavius acknowledge Brutus’ nobility and arrange to bury him with honor.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS ABOUT THE PLAY: Musketeers were a special type of soldier, equipped with muskets, usually serving as infantry in early-modern armies in Europe. They served King Louis XIII, who became ruler of France as a child after Henry IV was assassinated. He was taciturn and suspicious and relied heavily on his chief ministers, including Cardinal Richelieu.
MONTALVO ARTS CENTER IN COLLABORATION WITH WE PLAYERS PRESENTS
Queen Anne, of Austria, married King Louis when he was fourteen. She had a difficult time with the King and Cardinal, worsened when Richelieu declared war on Anne’s brother. The Duke of Buckingham, who, in the Musketeers novel, is obsessed with Anne, has a similar role in England as the Cardinal in France. Alexandre Dumas wrote The Three Musketeers in 1844. Set in the middle of King Louis XIII’s reign, the novel takes place in 1625-1628. It follows the journey of D’Artagnan, a young Gascon who journeys to Paris to become a Musketeer. He meets Athos, Porthos, and Aramis separately, offends each, and his adventure is ultimately joined with that of these already infamous three Musketeers. Ken Ludwig’s The Three Musketeers premiered in 2006 at the Bristol Old Vic, in England. His many comedies include Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, Sullivan and Gilbert, Crazy for You and Shakespeare in Hollywood, which SVS performed in 2015.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES: “I do not say there is no character as well-drawn in Shakespeare [as d’Artagnan]. I do say there is none that I love so wholly.” – Robert Louis Stevenson
High praise from the late-1800s author of Treasure Island and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Like many Shakespeare plays, Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel about d’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers has been adapted to dozens of films, many stage versions, and even musicals. What’s the everlasting allure? The Musketeers are wholly admirable. As Richard Ryan, fight director of the original 2006 production, described classic swashbucklers, they “have the quality of fighting for their lives but enjoying every minute of it.” They “show panache, bravado, and brio.” They are “confident without being arrogant… believe in fair play and honor… and help the underdog.” Any two-hour adaptation of a long novel makes tough choices. Most major elements from the novel are present here, either directly or in a passing homage. The major difference in this adaptation is Sabine. Often, Sabine is simply Milady de Winter’s first name. Making her d’Artagnan’s cheeky kid sister is Ludwig’s creation. He had two main reasons. To give the story a different, modern lens, he thought it an “ideal time to give the story a more feminine viewpoint to go along with the masculine viewpoint that is so ingrained in the story already.” He also “thought it was important that d’Artagnan has someone in the story to whom he’s genuinely devoted. It means there’s more at stake.” Between Sabine’s vibrant presence, Milady’s ubiquitous scheming, Constance’s fortitude, and Queen Anne being the clearly stronger royal, this Musketeers experience should be as exhilarating as any – but this time not just because of the boys. - Doug Brook 2016.07 • BAYSTAGES.COM | 5
