Old vs. new. Classical vs. contemporary. Shakespeare vs. Silicon Valley. One may think that they are in opposition to one another. That one celebrates yesteryears, and the other revels in new discovery. That one, perhaps, fears change, and the other forgets to look to the wisdom of history. But at Silicon Valley Shakespeare, we embrace both the old and the new. We celebrate the rich artistry of the classics and also seek ways to present them with a contemporary lens to excite a modern audience. I believe that when we are at our best, both in creating art and living our lives to the fullest, we celebrate both sides of these proverbial coins. We remain “old souls” with a deep appreciation for the poetry of times gone by, while forging into the future with a youthful heart to discover new ways to see the world.
Join us at the 9th Annual
Arts Walk Santa Clara 2015
This year’s Sanborn park lineup is indeed a celebration of both old and new and how we value them equally. Shakespeare’s decadent, romantic tragedy, Antony and Cleopatra, plays on the SVS stage for the first time in our theatre’s history. With Artistic Director Emeritus Larry Barrott at the helm bringing the beauty and drama that this epic tale deserves to the stage, we are celebrating the classics being set in their original period (with one modern design element), as well as the rich history that Larry has in guiding SVS to where it is today. While Antony and Cleopatra celebrates the roots of our company and the Bard’s work in its original form, Shakespeare in Hollywood, directed by our new Executive Director, Doug Brook, is a celebration of the new. This Ken Ludwig play that premiered in 2004 is a fun-filled Shakespeare-inspired romp through a 1930s Warner Bros. sound stage that merges classic Hollywood with Shakespeare’s world of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Its clever mix of two iconic Shakespeare characters and old Hollywood personalities is a delight, and in producing it, SVS is celebrating a contemporary play that has been inspired by history.
Old and new. Classic and contemporary. Shakespeare and Silicon Valley. We celebrate both sides of the coin. We are old souls who cherish the classics and are inspired by the contemporary… and this is what makes us Silicon Valley Shakespeare. An old soul with a youthful heart,
- Angie Higgins Artistic Director

DIRECTOR'S NOTE When thinking of Antony’s and Cleopatra’s love story, I am reminded of Edith Piaf’s “Hymn a l’amour (If You Love Me, Really Love Me)” where she declares that the world can drown or burn, so long as [our] love exists. Our lovers are a man and woman well into their middle years (53 and 39, respectively), a pair who have seen much and done more. In the midst of political maneuvering, they, against all odds, have found true love – a love strong enough to make the loyal Antony overthrow honor and rebel against mother Rome, and Cleopatra to risk the ire of the invading Romans and their coldly rational leader, Octavian.

It has been 14 years since the assassination of Julius Caesar. The Second Triumvirate of Marc Antony, Octavian Caesar (Augustus Caesar), and Lepidus is collapsing. Marc Antony, in open rebellion with Rome, remains in Egypt with his lover, Cleopatra VII. Meanwhile, Octavian, in order to secure his rule must bring Antony to heel or destroy him. Set against this background of contending forces, Shakespeare – taking some license – gives us one of History’s most indelible love stories. Sexual and political power emanates from our lovers. It is not the naïve young lovers of Romeo and Juliet, nor the power-grasping hunger disguised as love that possesses the Macbeths, but rather the triumph of true love, even through death, over the absolute power that seeks to define Marc Antony and Cleopatra. Antony and Cleopatra is an epic tragedy where love vies with an empire and its emperor, and in death both defeats and is defeated. Sit back and enjoy as SVS brings this not-oft seen tragedy to life. - Larry Barrott

SYNOPSIS Mark Antony, instead of ruling the Eastern Roman Empire, has been dallying in Egypt with Cleopatra. The death of his wife and the threat of war by Pompey bring him back to Rome. As a goodwill gesture, he marries Octavia, Caesar’s sister, but this only delays the inevitable. Caesar and Antony begin to clash with their armies. Octavia tries to repair the damage, but Antony seizes the opportunity of her absence to return to Cleopatra. Octavius, now enraged at the dishonor of his sister, plans an attack. Cleopatra convinces Antony to do battle at sea rather than on land, where he has the advantage. During the naval battle, Cleopatra flees. Antony follows her and the battle becomes a Roman victory. Caesar rejects any offer of peace and attempts to split Antony and Cleopatra. He tells Cleopatra that she will remain Queen of Egypt if she kills Antony. She refuses and the armies meet on land, ending in victory for Antony. The two armies fight the next day and another Egyptian retreat secures the victory for Caesar. Antony accuses Cleopatra of treachery and threatens her. To save herself, she flees to her tomb and sends word that she has killed herself. In anguish, Antony falls on his sword and asks to be taken to Cleopatra. Before he dies, they profess their love one last time. Caesar promises mercy to Cleopatra, but she knows that he intends to parade her as a war captive, and uses a poisonous asp to end her own life. The lovers are buried together by Caesar as a final act of kindness.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Ken Ludwig is the king of the modern American screwball comedy. Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, and the book for the Gershwin musical Crazy For You are just a few titles in his vast library. Against his own norm, Ludwig was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company to write Shakespeare in Hollywood, which ultimately premiered in 2004 at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Inspiration came from recent films by Kenneth Branagh and Baz Lurhman, and particularly Tom Stoppard’s Shakespeare in Love, which brought to the Bard a generation that often didn’t finish reading the Cliffs Notes, let alone the actual plays. Shakespeare in Love’s portrayal of producers and writers in Shakespeare’s time was not unlike the internal lunacy that’s inhabited Hollywood since its inception. It reminded Ludwig of the infamous 1935 film of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This Midsummer was only the second non-silent Hollywood film of a Shakespeare play, though many silent films preceded it. The film lives in infamy because the making of this Midsummer was nearly as epic as the film itself. It starred Victor Jory and the child star Mickey Rooney, plus James Cagney in a rare non-gangster role. It included Dick Powell, the 1930s heartthrob who had just appeared in 42nd Street, Joe E. Brown who had just made a trio of baseball films, and was the screen debut of Olivia de Havilland, who just turned 99 this year!
(408) 867-4040
Max Reinhardt, who escaped the Nazis in his native Austria, directed the film – his only Hollywood venture – after directing thirty stage productions of Midsummer worldwide.
Silicon Valley Shakespeare’s In-School Outreach
While some liberties are taken, much of what you see tonight actually occurred. Mickey Rooney did break his leg just after production began. Many Shakespearean films were produced as a result of nepotism. The Hays Office had the exact objections to the film that you’ll hear – and there’s no explanation for why they were ultimately withdrawn.
Bring the excitement of live theatre into your classroom with a series of in-school modular classes designed to enhance your existing curriculum with experiential learning.
Ludwig said he might have enjoyed writing this play more than any other. A lover of research, it appealed to his Shakespearean addiction and love of 1930s Hollywood. We hope that tonight’s unexpected arrival of Oberon and Puck on the scene will appeal to you, whether you know every shadow of Midsummer or don’t know Shakespeare from sheep dip. - Doug Brook

Meanwhile, in the forest, a war is brewing between Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies. To revenge himself upon his wife, Oberon has his henchman Puck obtain a flower whose juice will cause the victim to “madly dote” upon the next creature they see. Oberon and Puck, armed with this juice, cause Titania to fall in love with Nick Bottom, a weaver and amateur thespian who Puck has given the head of an ass. Puck, on his night’s wanderings has also caused complete chaos among the young lovers, at one point causing both young men to fall in love with Helena. However, in the morning, Jack has Jill, nought has gone ill, and it all seems like a dream - just in time for the wedding day.
