t is my pleasure to invite you to enjoy the 44th annual Bucks County Designer House & Gardens, the premier fundraiser of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown. Thanks to the participation of talented interior and landscape designers, the community looks forward to this annual spring event. As you will see, this year’s designers have outdone themselves. Be sure to allow plenty of time to take in the beauty of each room and stroll through the wonderful gardens. Proceeds from the Designer House benefit the Doylestown Health System and VIA mission projects. The hospital allocation will support ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health. Some of the signature projects of the One Vision campaign include a new, state-of-the-art Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion, a Surgical Suite renovation and expansion, an Outpatient Pavilion, and a new Community Center at Pine Run. We are proud that Doylestown Hospital has once again been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson HealthTM. It is the only hospital in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to receive this distinction For the past 124 years, the VIA has been passionate about enhancing the health and welfare of the community. The VIA proceeds allocation will support projects that provide aid for the needy in our community, scholarships for teens pursuing medical careers and for eligible women, often single mothers, returning to the workforce who wish to improve their education and skills. It will also help us preserve our historic headquarters, the James-Lorah Memorial Home. Peppermint Farm, a 32-acre farmstead, was once the home of the Simons family. Here Florence and Gerald Simons raised nine active children in the 1860’s six-bedroom farmhouse. The VIA appreciates the family giving us the opportunity to showcase their property. This annual undertaking would not be possible without the support of many. The VIA is grateful for the generosity and continued support of Designer House Honorary Chairs Joan and Dr. Don Parlee. Thank you to the Designer House Committee of 70-plus women who, under the superb leadership of Chair Dr. Sandy M. Homel, have worked tirelessly to make this project a reality. In addition, thank you to the more than 900 volunteers, benefactors, sponsors and patrons for their continued support. We are happy that you have come to visit the 2019 Designer House. Please consider attending our weekly seminars and wellness days, shopping in the boutiques, dining in our café, and purchasing some of the designers’ beautiful furnishings available for sale.

Thank you and enjoy your visit!

From the Chair Welcome to the 44th Bucks County Designer House & Gardens

O

n behalf of the Designer House Committee of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), I welcome you to Peppermint Farm. This charming property has been home to the Florence Simons Family for 62 years. The Simons family purchased the property in 1956 and named it Peppermint Farm because peppermint was the main crop that was grown on the 32-acre farmstead which includes a circa 1860 six-bedroom farmhouse, a two-car garage with a workshop, the base of a bank barn, a milk house, a studio and a children’s playhouse. The late Gerald Simons earned his livelihood in the construction business and he creatively reconfigured the house in order to accommodate his growing family of nine children and during your tour, some of these unique features will be pointed out to you. I am pleased to announce that Joan B. and Dr. Donald E. Parlee, M.D. are the 2019 Honorary Chairs. Joan, VIA president from 2006-2008, currently serves as Chair of the Boards of Doylestown Hospital and Doylestown Health Foundation. Dr. Don Parlee became a member of the hospital medical staff as a radiologist in 1965, eventually heading the radiology department for 25 years. Their involvement, dedication and support span nearly 55 years! The Designer House is a collaboration among our talented Design Team, creative landscapers, boutique owners, sponsors, advertisers, donors, area businesses and local organizations along with many community volunteers. We are grateful to them for their support, product donations and materials, as well as their gift of time. Seventy-plus Designer House committee members have given thousands of hours preparing and planning over this past year. We especially thank them and their families for their contributions and sacrifices. The BCDH&G is primarily a fundraiser with proceeds benefitting ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health and the mission of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown. Thank you for attending today and financially supporting us as we make this annual tradition into an extraordinary event. We hope you enjoyed your visit to Peppermint Farm!

In Memoriam Cyndi Haaz yndi Haaz, ASID, passed away on April 20, 2018. Cyndi was a dear friend and a talented, enthusiastic designer who participated in many of our Bucks County Designer Houses. In 1991, Cyndi initiated her business when she participated in our 1991 designer house, Mill Creek Farm. Extremely proud of her ASID appellation, interior design was Cyndi's third career and she created beautiful rooms for the 1995 and 1996 designer houses. In 1999 Cyndi, with a partner, branched out to become a kitchen designer and formed the company, Cyndi and Tucci. That same year, Glen Echo Farm was the site of their first designer house kitchen. Altogether Cyndi participated in a total of ten designer houses and was responsible for planning elegant, functional, state-of-the-art kitchens in 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2012. As the owner of Cyndi and Company, LLC, she had a reputation for her attention to detail, high-quality standards, creativity and the ability to connect with her clients - always with a smile. Cyndi fought a six-year battle with cancer and through it all maintained the grace and composure which she exemplified throughout her life and in her career. She had numerous friends because of her affiliation with the VIA. The Bucks County Designer House & Gardens Committee will always remember Cindy with fondness.

Farmhouse Chic

Area 21

armhouse Chic is a fresh take on an American classic. The inspiration for the living room materials was based on the hand-forged, iron sign hanging on the front lamppost. The mixture of black metals, rustic wood textures and soft white hues in this room convey a farmhouse atmosphere. The slip-covered sofa and white linen draperies help to create a light, airy feel while the black metals and leather recliner add definition. Stay for a while and take in the serenity of this space.

It was One Vision from the very start. Envisioning the best care for their community, the forward-thinking women of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA) founded Doylestown Hospital in 1923 and prescribed a simple, clear course that inspires us still: create a place “to improve the health and welfare” of the community. With a tradition of insight and innovation, what was once an 8-bed hospital has grown to what is now Doylestown Health.

Doylestown Health Foundation gratefully acknowledges the

Village Improvement Association of Doylestown and the

44th Annual Bucks County Designer House & Gardens

and is honored to be the beneficiary of the generosity of the VIA, our community, patients, family and friends.

Today, Doylestown Health is beginning a bold new chapter as we approach our second century of healthcare delivery. To honor our centennial, Doylestown Health has launched an ambitious $75 million comprehensive campaign, ONE VISION: The Campaign for Doylestown Health to elevate the patient experience and unlock our full potential to deliver exceptional care. Investments in Doylestown Health will help us to remain a place where science and technology meet grace and humanity. The One Vision campaign funds a wide range of transformative initiatives and priorities that include the capital construction projects currently underway which will reach completion in 2023 to coincide with Doylestown Health’s centennial year. Thank you again to the VIA for your guiding light, your generosity, and the good work you are doing to help us realize our ONE VISION for our second century of care.

We invite you to JOIN US as we build a future

that is worthy of our past. For more information, visit DoylestownHealthFoundation.org or call 215.345.2009.

t

he saga of 14 women who founded the Village improvement association of Doylestown on april 26, 1895 is remarkable. among other initial causes, the women were moved by dusty Doylestown streets which they saw as not only a nuisance but as a health hazard. When their pleas to clean up the streets went unanswered, they decided to take matters into their own hands. they collected donations and purchased a horse-drawn sprinkler to dampen the offending dust and also bought trash receptacles to free the streets of garbage and debris. this established their mission to enhance the quality of life in central Bucks county. in 1916, they established a Visiting nurse service using a $500 donation and matching funds. During the 1918 flu epidemic, nurse Munsey made 741 house calls by bicycle in one month, charging just 10-15

98

Bucks County Designer House & Gardens

cents per visit. During World War i, the Via women assisted the red cross by rolling bandages and performing other services. out of this alliance emerged a well-baby clinic and emergency center. keenly aware that Doylestown area women had to travel to abington or Philadelphia for birthing, the Via established the First Doylestown emergency Hospital in 1923. Members performed all non-medical duties including cooking, canning food, cleaning and laundry. the first hospital outgrew its quarters and, in 1939, a 25-bed facility was built for $50,000. the current hospital on the West state street campus was completed in 1975 on property purchased from Delaware Valley college Bucks c o u n t y Designer House & gardens Bucks county Designer House & gardens. Doylestown Hospital is known as the only community

hospital in the united states to be founded and governed by a women’s organization. to this day, Via members serve as Doylestown Hospital’s chairman of the Board and chair key committees alongside hospital administration. the Via also established and oversees Pine run retirement community and Pine run at Lakeview. their influence is reflected in all aspects of management, development, physical appearance and patient relations. today’s Village improvement association of Doylestown has a membership of 300 women. expanding beyond health-related initiatives, they offer one-time grants to local nonprofit organizations, educational scholarships for outstanding high school seniors pursuing health-related careers, and scholarships for women seeking professional occupations. the Welfare committee provides confidential aid and emergency support to local families and individuals in need while the Veterans committee supports veteran-related causes. Widely known for their annual fundraiser, the Bucks county Designer House & gardens, proceeds from this event have supported Doylestown Hospital projects such as the children’s Village childcare facility,

special care nursery, transitional care unit, new critical care unit, the Heart center, radiology services, mammography services, facility renovations, Women’s services, the emergency Department and the Maternity Department. since 1971 the Via has donated more than $3.9 million dollars to Doylestown Hospital. Headquartered in the James-Lorah Memorial Home, a 17-room Federal-style residence listed on the national register of Historic Places, the organization meets monthly in the adjacent auditorium for fellowship, fun and leadership to fulfill their mission to enhance the health and welfare of central Bucks county and surrounding communities. the Via prides itself on bonding strongminded women to accomplish visionary and community efforts that facilitate change and bettering the community in which they live.
