PAST EVENTS TUESDAY 27th FEBRUARY TRIP TO THE VICTORIA BREWERY IN MÁLAGA

The ICE club coach picked us up in Estepona at the time on the ticket and a very full coach headed off to Malaga. Diane Hackett, the tour organiser, had offered us a choice to visit either the new Victoria Brewery or to do our own thing. On the coach most of us went for the visit knowing we would join up together afterwards. The Victoria Brewery is the most modern I have had the pleasure to visit, it was opened in 2017 and compared to older breweries at the beer production end looks very small. We all looked through large glass walls at what seemed very few staff working on washing and filling barrels. The bottling machine, like the rest of the impressive equipment, was not being used, so in all not a great deal for us to see. Despite a slight frustration about not seeing the beer flowing into barrels and bottles, our guide, whose name I don’t have, gave us a very interesting explanation on the history of the beginning of the company . One point that I did learn is that the beer is named from the Patron Saint of Málaga, Virgen de la Victoria. The beer was first brewed in Malaga in 1928, then it was just a local beer, but today it is getting known all over Spain and new beers are now being added so this brewery as it’s home coming. Our tour finished with a free beer tasting which we all agreed was a nice way to end our visit and to set off to find the rest of the club members. After a nice long lunch, and a stop at Iceland for shopping, we arrived back home by 6 o’clock. Thanks Diane for a well-organized and great day out. Submitted by Richard Wood FINANCIAL PLANNING! Shane was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. 'I may look like just an ordinary guy,' he said to her, 'But in just a few years my father will die and I will inherit £200 million'. Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and just three days later, she became his stepmother. Women are so much better at financial planning than men. 4

President’s Letter In March we had to say our final farewell to Martin

O'Gorman, our thoughts are with Bernadette and family at this very sad time. What a month we've had, never have I known it to rain so much the rambling group has not been out for nearly 4 weeks let's hope Easter will be dry for a change. Last month saw the first outing for the photo group and what a success it was, thanks Debbie. This month 50 of us are off to Madrid, do we pack woollies (spell check changed it to willies!!!) or summer clothes? Doug is organising a lunch trip out at the beginning of this month. Brenda is cooking a Sunday lunch this month to celebrate St George's Day don't forget to wear a rose! The ramblers are having their summer lunch in Benahavis on Wednesday 25th cost €11 for 3 course and tip. You don't need to ramble to attend. Has anybody got any ideas of a venue to celebrate our 30th birthday in November, please let the Committee have your thoughts. Please remember to mention the ICE magazine if you use one of our advertisers so that they are encouraged to advertise with us.

We are a non-profitable group who aim to raise funds for individuals, families that have / had cancer and Cancer Charities too. We would like to build a community for everyone to help others so that we can make life a little easier. Please join us on Facebook by becoming a member and keeping updated on future events. Many thanks and regards, Maria F4C If you care for someone or others as a family member, neighbour or even an employee then you will benefit from joining this Group. Use the Facebook page to make friends, find out about events such as coffee mornings. If you want to come to events but need to arrange respite care please let us know in advance.

Coffee machine In 2016 the membership voted to replace the coffee machine. This year we will be fulfilling your wishes. The coffee machine will be a more modern version of the one we have but you will have buttons to choose 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup 3/4 cup or full cup. It will still make 3 or 4 cups at a time. It will not automatically give any hot milk as this would mean the coffee machine would have to have the milk section cleaned thoroughly after every session and I would not like to place this responsibility on all bar volunteers. The idea of a pod machine is not practical as they are very slow and only make 1 cup per machine and everybody likes their coffee at different strengths. The present coffee is liked by many of the members if you have a particular way you like your coffee please inform whoever is behind the bar. When the new machine is installed I will make a date for bar training and hope as many bar staff or anybody interested will attend. As I am away for most of April the date will be in early May. MEMBERS ARTICLE Ever been had?

We were recently trying to educate ourselves with a trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. A world-renowned exhibition of art and ceramics, some dating back to even before Vic was born! One of the paintings caught Margaret’s eye, being entitled “St Margaret of Cortona” Hey, said Margaret, I may be related to a Saint! I’ll Google her when we get home. Oh dear! According to Mr Google, Saint Margaret of Cortona is the Patron Saint of: The falsely accused, hoboes, the homeless, the insane, the orphaned, the mentally ill, midwives, penitents, single mothers, reformed prostitutes, step-children and tramps. There was no mention of the ICE Club! Ah well, you can’t win them all! Next week we’re off to Saint Marks (and Spencer) to see if she has any relatives there! Margaret & Vic.

PAST EVENTS Saturday 17th March 2018. Loyal people turned out on a filthy wet night to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at the ICE Club. Music from Cindy and Martin, ably supported by Tony and Terry, a great night was had by all.

First time I heard about Paraprosdokians, I liked them. Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and is frequently humorous. (Winston Churchill loved them). 1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you... but it's still on my list. 3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up -- we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right, only who is left. 7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 8. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 9. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 10. In filling out an application, where it says, 'In case of emergency, notify...' I answered 'a doctor.' 11. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 12. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. 12

CODEWORDS No. 10 (Answers Page 32) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU No. 14 (Answers Page 32) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 14

Genealogy Group The ICE club genealogy group (Tracing your Family History) was launched on 18th April 2014, yes it was 4 years ago, and it was decided to launch at the regular computer meeting, as all researches from Spain would have to be done by the internet, and by using a computer. We had a very good attendance of 20 members at the launch meeting, and it was decided that we would meet at 11.00am on the 2nd Friday of the month, for the genealogy group meetings. I gave an explanation of my experience with genealogy in the last 25 years, together with information on how to get started, and to how to record the information that is gathered. At the first meeting, one member, Richard Wood, explained that he knew very little about his family, other than his father, mother, and grandfather, and that his father emigrated to Australia with his father, and that his Mother and Father were married in Australia. Within a short period of time we were able to establish, that his father and grandfather travelled to Australia on the same boat that his Mother did, and although his Father remained in Australia, his Mother returned, only to travel back to Australia, arriving 1 month before they were married. We also discovered that Richard’s grandmother died when his father was 2, and his grandfather, married her sister 7 years after his first wife died. We have also been able to put him in touch with a 2 nd cousin he knew nothing about, and they now exchange e-mails on an almost weekly basis. We have on average about 3-5 members who attend the meetings, and it is always nice to get new “members” to the group. We had a “new” member earlier in the year, who like Richard, said they had very little knowledge of their ancestors. Diane came to the meeting with only a copy of a marriage certificate of her parents. In a short place of time we discovered that her Grandfather came from Germany, she had always believed he was Russian, and that he was an artist who married a Belgium lady in London, moved to Liverpool with their 1 year old son (Diane’s father) and moved in to a dwelling on the top of a building where he removed a wall and replaced it by glass to which he painted, and it is now part of an art gallery. Their son, Diane’s Father, became a photographer, which in the mid 1800’s was in the early stages of photography, and he became quite a famous photographer of his era. If you have ever considered that you might like to trace your ancestors, please come along to one of our meetings, on the 2nd Friday, and although I won’t promise the earth, I am sure we can get some information about your family that you didn’t know. It doesn’t matter how many attend our meetings, be it 2 or twenty, I am sure we can find some information about your ancestors. It is a hobby that you may want to only be involved in a few months of the year, and that is OK, because one thing is for sure, the information about your ancestors will not diminish, but may increase as more databases become available to search on line. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Dave Hackett. An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. 'Yes, Dad, what is it?' 'Don't be nervous, son; do your best, and just remember, if it doesn't go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife....'

Garden Club

The first Garden Club meeting was held at 11.30 am on Tuesday 13 th March at the Agrojardin. A good attendance, especially considering the weather. Sandy welcomed everyone - even two new members. As always, we had an enjoyable meeting in a really beautiful area inside. When passing around photos of what is called ‘the most beautiful and largest flower garden in the world’ – the Dubai Miracle Garden – a member had actually been there and it was very interesting hearing how it is a yearly feature, how the flowers are kept from drying out in the intense heat etc. A suggestion for The Orchid House for Tuesday April 10th was agreed. Meeting at 11.30am inside will give us time to look around and be there when the waterfalls get turned on at 12.00. We can meet later at the café just down from the Orchid House on the left for the actual meeting. We then have our May 8th meeting at the Botanical Gardens in Malaga to look forward to. The Molina de Inca Torremolinos trip offered to all ICE members was so successful it seemed only natural to offer our visit to the Malaga Botanical Gardens. Sue is happy to take this on as ICE members have been there before. I am sure it will be a great day out – ticket price tba. Wilma suggested for the Tuesday 11th September meeting, we could all take a picnic and visit an area she knows very well in Jimena which is full of orchids and wild mushrooms – more details nearer the time. Again any ICE members welcome. The Jardin Botanico de Cactus was raised for a future visit but one of our members had been there and didn’t give a good review so it was put on hold – so many other places to go! More garden club venues to follow. Several garden problems were put forward and advice offered. Alison mentioned she works for St George’s Charity shop in Sabinillas on Thursday morning and has a ‘gardening corner’ with lots of 1 euro books. Sandy read out an article she had seen about seed bombs: Thousands of seeds hidden in clay composites have been dropped from a helicopter in an effort to repopulate trees in fire damaged areas. Andalucia dropped 27,000 seed bombs containing over half a million seeds from 30 different species including pines, carob and lavender. Rain helps their germination and they will be perfectly preserved in clay.” What a very clever, well thought out, idea. After coffees it was time to walk around all the beautiful plants, shrubs and trees to see/to buy. A wonderful way to spend a morning. Tip of the month: A small length of hosepipe wound between garden plants helps keep off cats and birds as they do not like snakes! Submitted by Sandy Avis Thursday 15th March, Christina Woodward was presented with a gift of flowers, chocolates and a bottle of Cava to celebrate her 80th Birthday.

Thursday 22nd March, Joanna Mitchell was presented with a bouquet of flowers in thanks and recognition of her work as a Ticket Lady. 17

Submitted by Terry Smith Motoring News The DGT (Directorate General of Traffic of Spain) have been testing new, small in size, speed radar cameras that are unlikely to be seen by drivers. The units are called the Velolaser, and can detect maximum speeds of up to 250 km/hr in both directions. These new devices can be placed anywhere, have been tested in Badajoz and other areas including Andalucía. These units are ready to be easily transported on a Guardia Civil motorcycle or installed on a tripod, and they can also be easily anchored on guardrails or on any post; They can even be installed in a car. The installation is so simple that it is designed to be mounted in just one minute. These are not detectable by radar detector devices (which remember are illegal). Once detecting a speeding driver, an image of the license plate is sent to traffic officers. You have been warned. Submitted by Terry Smith 24

ACTIVITIES AT ICE ICE Club Golf Society For the golf society and indeed the ICE Club, March will be remembered as a

very sad one. One of our most popular golfers and club member, Martin O'Gorman, died very suddenly. It was a massive shock not only to his wife and family, but also to all of us who had benefitted from knowing him. He was a warm hearted, caring, funny man who loved his golf. His jokes and anecdotes were endless. We will never forget him. Bernadette, his wife, also plays with us regularly and we all hope she will continue to join us, with her wonderful temperament and ready smile. The weather has affected some of our rollups this month which doesn't happen very often fortunately. We are all hoping for 'normal' sunny days with warm sun again very soon. There was no away day golf in March, but of course we have the Spring Cup Competition and lunch on the 10th of April. Anyone is welcome to play or just come to the lunch. Please sign up on the club notice board if you wish to play and contact Peter Henry for lunch tickets. Contacts: Peter Henry 693105180 Jan Blind 603670330 Stephen McMurtry 608854505

Five things you may not realise about UK inheritance tax By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks

As inheritance tax revenue continues to soar for the UK Treasury year-by-year, it seems more families are getting caught in the net. For expatriates, it can be difficult to know where you stand with UK inheritance tax. But with rates at 40%, it pays to understand your position and what you can do to minimise exposure for your heirs. You could still be UK-domiciled Even after many years of living abroad, you could still be considered UK-domiciled, bringing you into the firing line for inheritance tax. While it is possible to adopt a domicile of choice in Spain by severing all ties with the UK, domicile law is extremely complex. Also, new rules could mean that returning to the UK for a relatively short period could reignite inheritance tax liability for non-domiciles. It affects UK assets and potentially your worldwide estate For UK domiciles, UK inheritance tax applies to your entire estate. Even if you are not UK-domiciled, any British assets attract UK inheritance tax. This now includes all UK residential property. Before 5 April, property owned through a corporate structure (‘enveloped’) was generally exempt, If necessary, explore your options for the most tax-efficient way forward. A new relief was introduced last year… Until recently, the only available inheritance tax relief was a £325,000 nil-rate band. But in April 2017, the ‘residential nil-rate band’ came into effect, providing extra relief when passing on a main home to direct descendants. It started at £100,000 and rises by £25,000 each April until it reaches £175,000 in 2020/21, and then tracks inflation. As with the standard allowance, you can transfer any unused balance to your spouse/civil partner. …but it has limitations To be eligible for the allowance, your property must be seen to be your main home that you have lived in at some point. It is only available on one property that is passed directly to children or grandchildren. Larger estates will not receive full relief – estates worth over £2 million have a lower threshold, and those over £2.2 million do not receive anything at all. Your entire estate is counted here. Your home could tip you over the threshold Despite the new allowance, the government’s inheritance tax coffers continue to swell. This has much to do with the increasing value of assets, particularly property. Now, residential property accounts for more than a third of a typical estate liable for IHT. The Office for Budget Responsibility predicts IHT revenue will exceed £6 billion by 2021.

However, there are ways to mitigate UK inheritance tax. An adviser with specialist, cross-border expertise can help you establish your domicile status and how UK inheritance tax interacts with Spanish succession and gift tax. With good estate planning, you can structure your wealth to take advantage of the reliefs and ensure your legacy ends up in the right hands without leaving your heirs an unnecessarily large tax bill. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. April 2018 Copycat Websites As we approach the holiday season, it is opportune that we warn you about some of the scams that people easily fall for. When renewing passports and EHIC cards, obtaining visas or applying or renewing other official items, please be aware that there are many websites which offer to carry out the service for an additional charge. Some of these charge a fee for processing items which you can apply for yourself for free e.g. some will charge £35 for an EHIC card which you can obtain for free. In order to assist you, we list below the main genuine sites for applying for some services. DVLA: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/driver-and-vehicle-licensing-agency EHIC: www.ehic.org.uk Esta (US visa waiver): www.esta.cbp,dhs.gov/esta UK Passport Renewal: www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew Turkish Visa: www.evisa.gov.tr/en Indian Visa (Application for e-visa for all nationalities): www.indianvisaonline.gov.in If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com PHOTOGRAPY GROUP April - . A trip to the polo fields in Sotogrande to do some photography of moving subjects. The proposed date is April 20th. This is contingent on Santa Maria Polo Club scheduling, and beyond my control. Matches normally start at 11am so 9:30am meet at the club-no strenuous walking, travel to a restaurant near the fields for coffee, then over to the fields. Lots to photograph regardless of camera type. For anyone living west of the club they could be at the restaurant to meet the rest of the group there. It’s the one at the western end ICE pick-up location, next to the petrol station (across from the fruit and veg stalls also known as “opposite the pot shop”). If members are careful and we ask permission, we may get some good field locations, though regardless there is the opportunity to photograph the horses and people in a way that will suit everyone. In May we will go back to the regular slot of the third Friday of the month, and we can discuss and critique the photos taken in March and April.
