Our New Ladies Lunch Organiser

OUR NEW LADIES LUNCH ORGANISER Lynne Danby

I have ' volunteered' to organise the Monthly Ladies Lunch with the ICE Club.

The first Lunch on October 25th was at the Yacht Club in Duquesa Port. The Men were next door in the Bistro.

It was good to try something different and I had very good reports from both.

We meet for a social 'get together' on the 4th Tuesday in the month. Ladies in one restaurant and Men nearby. I try to arrange parking nearby too!

If anyone knows a restaurant, we could try which they would recommend please don't hesitate to let me know.

I have lived in Spain for 17 years since January 2006.My FatherWilliam Danby (Chic) has been here longer and lives 400metres from me near the port in Estepona. I have three sons, who all have partners and children and love to come to Estepona for a holiday each year with Nana.

I am on the committee for Estepona floral Art club, I belong to A.R.E.M.E, and I am a friend of Age Concern.

Iberia has received visitors over the ages who have left their mark. No, not larger-louts and time-share sales people. Before them! Let’s think of the period from the arrival the Phoenicians in the 4th C BCE and the Romans in the first few centuries of the Current Era, the Visigoths in the 5th C with early Christianity, and ending with the huge presence of the Moors from the 7th C for another 700-odd years until 1492 when their last stronghold at Granada finally fell to the forces of Catholic Spain. The impact of these visitors on art and architecture in Andalucia is still there today.

Phoenician artwork found in Andalucia includes pottery, jewellery and statues, and coins made from local metals including gold and silver. And jewellery made with Spanish gold was found during excavations in Italy. The Romans left magnificent mosaics in the area, particularly in Italica, along with their amphitheatre and other buildings. In Merida, Roman villas and the aqueduct are exceptional examples.

The Visigoths introduced the horseshoe archway design that remained a feature of many building that followed, including some build by the Moors.

The Moors created their Muslim capital city at Cordoba, converting the earlier Christian church into a huge mosque. The original Christian tower was extended in height in Moorish style while the mosque itself took on the functions of established mosques with spaces for worship, living, shelter and storage.

As well as using the horseshoe archways, the Moors included stilted archways to raise the ceiling height, and also followed the Roman idea of using stonework of different colours. This was thought to be purely decorative, but later realised to be a proofing against earthquake tremors, having been used by the Romans throughout the Middle East.

Amongst their decorations was the use of script from the Qur’an and various natural and geometric patterns to fill wall surfaces, and to apply mosaics in geometric patterns on floors, walls and ceilings. The floors were finished smooth and suitable for bare feet to walk on, but the walls and ceilings were decorated so that the mosaic pieces were set at an angle to reflect light, using mother-of-pearl, glass and polished stone.

Of all the Muslim buildings, the Alhambra Palace at Granada remains the best example of style, grandeur and elegance. Rills of water constantly flowed across the courtyards to inspire harmony with the universe, and the Court of Lions offered the ultimate in contrasts –light and shade, noise and silence, conversation and contemplation.

It is said that on visiting the Alhambra, the English horticulturist, garden designer, writer and artist, Gertrude Jekyll realised the potential of the designs and used it in some of the 400 gardens she designed in the early 20th C, including Hestercombe House in Somerset.

Further details on art in Spain can be found in Jan Morris’s Spain and in An Oxford Archeological Guide (Spain) by Roger Collins. Visits to sites at Bolonia (near Tarifa), Italica (near Santiponce) and Merida are also recommended. In case anyone questions the name of the gardener, Gertrude had a brother, Walter who was a close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson. RLS probably borrowed the name for his Gothic stories.
