Editorial: Many thanks to Peter Dowd, who has co-authored the Technology Matters article, with Vic Loughran, for every edition for a very long time (way before my time) but has now decided to give this up. I shall probably take on the task of seeking information for this in the new year. So, if you have any technical tips and trips you’d like to pass on to our readers, please send them to me. This edition has an abundance of seasonal jokes and ideas and the social calendars are full of events and activities. I will be printing copies of the list of Spanish Public Holidays. Please let me know if you would like one. They will also be on the Notice Boards in the Clubhouse. Hope you all have a Happy Christmas and Healthy New Year. President’s Letter Well here we are again, nearly at the end of another year, for Rob & I personally, 2019 has been our Annus Horribilis and we shall be glad to see 2020 arrive. I hope all of you who are entitled to vote in UK have done your bit, let's hope we don't get a hung Parliament as we need to move on with our lives one way or another. Many of you will, of course, be returning to UK to celebrate Christmas but those of you who are staying we have plenty going on in the Club. Don't forget to visit the Club on Christmas Day, bring a plate, no excuse to spend the day by yourself. Thursday 26th the Club will be closed. Christmas lunch is 12th December but if you haven't got your tickets you're probably too late. Thursday 19th December we are having lunch out at Mini India, tickets are on sale. Anne Hardwick is holding her Christmas night on Sunday evening 8th, a good time to start the Festive season. Christmas quiz is on the 6th December. Please remember, whenever you leave home to carry driving licence, residencia card and health cards, by law in Spain you have to carry identification. Mulled wine is now available at the bar to warm you up on these cold damp days. Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year. Sue Potter, President

MEMBER’S ARTICLE Who gave the Months their Names? Let’s deal with the easy months first, remembering that two thousand years ago the European new year started in March (see an earlier ICE Magazine article) and that Latin and ancient Greek cultures were largely influential in the creation of calendars, months and their names. So, counting from March, September obviously comes from the Latin, septimum, the seventh, October from octavum, the eighth, and November and December from nonum and decimum, the ninth and tenth months. They are much the same in French, Italian and Spanish, as are the other months, and not too dissimilar in other European languages, the Arabic of northern Africa and Azerbaijani, but very different in Cornish, Chinese, Croatian, Ndebele and Japanese – and a lot of others besides! But if you are wondering about Old English, Scots Gaelic or Swazi? Don’t go there! Back in ancient Rome, however, the fifth and the sixth months were called Quintilis and Sextilis, the fifth (quintum) and sixth (sextum). It was Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar who thought it appropriate to perpetuate memory of themselves by giving their names to those two months. And you might ask why did subsequent emperors resist the temptation to name other months after themselves. Well, Domitian, the emperor 81-96 CE, decided to call September Domitia and October Germanica (an extra name he acquired after doing battle successfully in Germania) but, such was life at the time, he was assassinated and the names reverted. Other emperors evidently didn’t try! Now, let’s get back to the start of the year in March, the name coming from Mars, the god of War. In those days, they didn’t fight during the winter, (too wet and cold, and no fodder for the horses!) and the start of the fighting year was in the spring – March. And marching, of course! April was more peaceful, and comes from the Latin apertio, meaning ‘opening’ - the leaves and flowers open in April, whereas in May, the plants start growing, and Maia, the goddess of Growth gets the credit. June is named after Juno, the queen of the gods. They must have hoped to curry some favour! That’s ten of the months named. February, from the Latin word februum, a purification ritual, was the month during which Rome sought to ‘spring-clean’ the streets and their lives with sacrifices and various acts of purification, presumably before going off to war! The Catholic church retains February as the month of purification of the Virgin Mary. February remained the last month of the year until Julius Caesar rearranged the calendar, and any extra days needed to adjust the calendar to match the orbit of the sun, were added at the end of the year – the end of February, and continues so to this day. That leaves only January. When Julius Caesar changed the start of the year from some time in March to the new date, Janus was the god in charge of the gates of heaven and was in fact, the god of all doors and gates. His name therefore suited the idea of opening a new year, and because he had two heads, he could look back at the old year while looking forward to the new one. One final thought. February with its 28 days, is the only month that sometimes does not have a full moon, or a new moon, for that matter. A full moon failed to appear in February only last year, and this will happen again in 2037. The corresponding dates for no new moon are 2014 and 2033. Submitted by Geoff Morgan

ACTIVITIES AT ICE ICE Club Golf Society Hello everyone. Our busy society continues into winter with very good turnouts for our twice weekly roll ups. We also welcome a number of the non playing ladies joining us at the nineteenth hole for a drink or two and a laugh with us at our usually pointless conversations. The last month gave us some particularly sad and happy moments. The very sad moment was when we heard of the death of Bruno van Elewijck. He was not well known in the Ice club but payed a lot of golf with us when he was visiting from his home country of Belgium. I can say that he was liked by everyone as a constantly jovial man with a very easy going attitude. We had many laughs together and we will all miss him. The highlight of the month was our golf break to Costa Ballena near Cadiz. It started very well with everyone arriving in good time. The hotel, which is surrounded by the three nine hole courses, provided very comfortable spacious rooms with views of the golf and the sea in the background. They also had a superb spa area with a number of different treatments and very relaxing after a round of golf. It was well used by our group. As we all started our first round in the afternoon, the weather gradually deteriorated with heavy cloud and some wind. This was followed by thunder and lightning and the golf course officials closed the course. The early buggies had managed nine holes but the last group were only playing the fourth hole. So it was a disappointing start for us all and a very early move to the bar! They with the winners with considerable consumption of beer, wine and an odd hot chocolate with brandy or two. ( Lumumbas). Day two provided sunshine for a four ball competition which was won by the international pairing of Patrick and Nuala O'Connell with Les Jinks and Peter Henry. In second place was Steve McMurtry, Evelyn Byrne, Alan Green and Tineke Christensen. Day three was played as a four ball better ball with Jackie McMurtry and Nuala O'Connell winning with a tie for second and third places by Alan Green/Patrick O'Connell and Joe Scanlon/David Lines. Overall lady winners were Jackie McMurtry and Nuala O'Connell with equal points and third was Janet Green. Overall men's results were Patrick O'Connell, Jan Hakansson and Peter Henry in first second and third. With the courses in very good condition and great weather for two of the three days, it was very enjoyable golf. Well played everyone. The hotel arranged for all thirty six of us to sit in the same area for the excellent buffet dinner. Evenings finished in the spacious lounge area with the usual tales of the day on and off the courses and some vocal renditions, usually starting with our Irish members. Here's to winter sun and great golf. Contacts: Peter Henry: 693105180 Jan Blind: 603670330, Stephen McMurtry: 608854505

MICKEY’S ORIGINAL EGG NOG A YULETIDE TREAT 1 part dark rum 1/2 tsp local honey 1 part each heavy cream and milk 1 egg yolk Pinch of nutmeg, salt Start by whisking the egg yolk and honey together in a small bowl. Then, in a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine cream, milk, salt, and nutmeg and stir the mixture until it just reaches a simmer. Next temper the eggs by adding small spoonfulls of the hot mixture to the egg mixture. Slowly add the rum - Ron Montero - the slightly sweeter Spanish rum works really well and the price won’t knock you out...but the egg nog might! Decorate with a cinnamon stick (it also serves as a stirrer). Note that these quantities are for one person so simply multiply them by the number of chums you want to make happy. Do enjoy! ATTENTION Best drunk at home with no expectation of operating anything mechanical. This is a sipping experience so be careful. It tastes rather like a lovely ice cream soft drink enough said. - Submitted by Michael Dowling

CODEWORDS (Answers Page 33) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. Some things I’ve always wondered • • • • • •
How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours? Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? 31

Why effective tax planning is so important By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks When it comes to savings and investments, is your main objective to preserve your wealth, provide an income or generate growth? Or all three? Whatever the answer, tax planning plays an important role in protecting and making the most of what you have. While the tax tail should not necessarily wag the investment dog, there are numerous benefits to strategic tax planning, especially for expatriates who have cross-border considerations. A reduced tax bill for you The most obvious advantage is reducing your overall liability for income tax, capital gains tax and any other taxes on your savings, investments, assets and pensions. If there is a more tax-efficient way to hold your capital and assets, doesn’t it make sense to explore if it could work for you? Many people fail to do that and unknowingly end up paying more than they need have, such as income tax on bank interest they are not withdrawing, or capital gains tax when switching between investments. Many expatriates are caught out by not reviewing their arrangements for their new life abroad. Once you are no longer UK-resident, assets that were tax-efficient back home, such as ISAs, may become taxable in Spain. Meanwhile, you could be missing out on alternative structures available here that can reduce your tax liability while providing other potential benefits. Less taxation for your heirs With some investment structures you may also be able to lower the inheritance tax liability for your heirs. Ideally you want a solution that will limit inheritance taxes while providing tax-efficient income and investment growth throughout your lifetime. In any case, strategic tax planning could help make things easier for your family when you are gone. Many investment arrangements that provide tax efficiency also offer more estate planning flexibility and control. Maximising real returns Effective tax planning also plays a part in helping returns outpace the cost of living. Ultimately, what counts when assessing the value of investments are actual returns – after all tax, expenses and inflation are taken into account. With investments, the starting point should always be making sure your portfolio is well diversified and designed to suit your situation, needs, goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. But without suitable tax planning, you could find returns diminished by taxes that could have been avoided or reduced. How to get the best results It is easy to get DIY tax planning wrong, especially with the regulatory goalposts changing frequently. Expatriates have the added complication of having to deal with the tax rules of more than one country, at a time when global tax scrutiny is at its highest. Your tax planning should not be done in isolation or as an afterthought – it is a fundamental part of your investment, pensions, estate planning and overall wealth management approach. For the best result and peace of mind, talk to an adviser with in-depth understanding of cross-border taxation. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com 35
