THE INTERNATIONAL CLUB OF ESTEPONA (I.C.E.) SIBERME THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
POSTAL VOTING
The Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 21st March 2019. As agreed previously, Members who are unable to attend may vote by Postal Vote. (See below) May I draw your attention to Article 8 in the Club Statutes? Article 8
Subject to the provisions of Article 9, all resolutions proposed at a General Meeting will be
approved only if a favourable vote is forthcoming from a majority of the Members present or represented. Each Member shall be entitled to one vote only. Any Member unable to attend may personally apply to the Secretary for a postal vote for the published agenda. It will be issued specifically for that Member. Such postal vote will be valid only and exclusively for the meeting specified to which it relates and only for the nominated item or items indicated on the Agenda and verified on the postal voting form, which shall be submitted to the Secretary not less than 24 hours prior to the time of the first call for such meeting. The President may direct that a sealed ballot is taken for the vote on any resolution which, in his or her opinion, is likely to be particularly contentious. You can apply to the Secretary for a postal vote in person, by letter, by telephone, by e-mail anytime from now until the Sunday before the meeting (Sunday 17th March). Please apply as early as possible to allow our Secretary time to record your request and obviously if you are applying for a Postal Vote by post and would like to receive your voting papers by post then allow sufficient time. Our Secretary’s details are:-
Margaret Whittley ICE Club Secretary, C/o The ICE Club, Urbanization Bahia Dorada, Entrance 5, Km. 149, A7, Estepona 29680, MĂĄlaga. Tel:- 951972577 or 603846698 e-mail: mwhittley83@gmail.com
Margaret will need to know your membership number, your name, your address, your contact telephone number and your e-mail address, if you have one. She also needs to know how you want the Postal Voting Form sending to you i.e. by hand, by post or by e-mail. The Agenda will be known 20 days before the meeting and the form will be sent to you as soon as is possible after this date. It will be your responsibility to see that the form is returned to the Secretary not less than 24hours before the A.G.M. (i.e. before 10.00am on Wednesday 20th March.)** ** To facilitate both last minute personal requests for a Postal Vote and the return of Postal Voting papers, Margaret will be in the Clubhouse (normal opening hours) on both Sunday, March 17th, and, for returning Postal Voting papers only, on Tuesday, March 19th. More information will be available in the February 2019 edition of ICE magazine. 4
President’s Letter We have had to say our final farewell to John Bennett. Our thoughts are with Ann and his sons at this very sad time. A belated Happy New Year to everybody and a stormy first quarter it's going to be, I think, until Brexit is sorted. May I remind everybody that membership renewals are now due. May I explain to everybody the 3 visit rule as there seems to be some confusion. If you live in Spain or spend more than 3 weeks in any 1 year you may visit the Club 3 times in a lifetime before you are expected to join the Club. House guests or holiday makers can use the Club, but have to be signed in and have to pay guest rates for any event, this includes card games and quiz. It is up to the organisers of regular events to make sure regular participants are members. It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Brenda is stepping down as catering manager at the AGM, I would like to take this opportunity to thank her very much for all her hard work. Brenda is willing to stay on the Committee. Jacqui Parrick is willing to stand as catering manager. Sally Holloway is standing down from the Committee but is continuing to be membership secretary. Thank you Sally for all the work you've done. Our AGM this year is being held on 21st March and there will be more information in this magazine. Full payments for the Valencia trip can now be paid and it is still possible to come if you haven't paid a deposit but please let us know as soon as possible. We still need more volunteers especially in the kitchen. If you can help please see Brenda. Remember without volunteers the Club wouldn't exist. Enjoy whatever events you participate in this month. Please let us know if you have any ideas for trips or events. PAST EVENTS TAKING THE ROUTE TO RUTE Twenty-three ICE Trekkers took to the hills on this fine November day, being collected spot on time by the Ricardo Coach. The roads took us north of Málaga, on the A-45 passing Antequera. The journey to Rute was broken with a Comfort Stop about 50 minutes prior to arriving. This was an efficient venue and all were served in good time. The scenery thus far was awe-inspiring, enhanced by the good weather. Our arrival in Rute set us down at one of the several museums that Rute boasts. This one was the Museo de Azucar. It held marvellous artisan works and to label a few, Disneyland, St. Peter's at the Vatican and the Taj Mahal - all fashioned in sugar. Opposite this museo was the Museo de Anis – “let the tasting commence” I heard these encouraging words uttered by Bob Taylor. Moving right along, we rode further in to the upper part of Rute where we alighted to visit the Museo de Jamones. This one held a plethora of items used in the curing of the Iberico ham. As you might guess, there is a delicatessen counter where one can reap the benefits of these products as well as several local cheeses. Yummy! The local Anis distillery was near this museo so a selection of this powerful booze was available for further shopping. On to the Museo de Chocolate where the Belen display is housed along with many life-sized figures – all created in chocolate in hues various. The building is maintained at a cool and constant temperature so that the displays remain stable! The “Belen” itself is set in a large room and depicts Bethlehem at the time of the birth of Jesus. This is quite some artistic cacao reproduction - a “Wow” factor to behold. Ah! now it's lunch time so back to the coach and off we go! Diane had booked the Venta Casa Juani – Venta Rosi restaurant overlooking the Iznajar Lake which is home to the largest dam in Spain. We enjoyed a fulfilling lunch from the Menu del Dia and the opportunity to gaze at the inland water with the surrounding beauty. The return journey was as smooth as the one experienced earlier this day and the sun began to cast long shadows and soft light over the mountains - truly a visual treat to welcome for one's eyes. Thanks for this trek go to Diane Hackett who had organised the whole trip. Dear fellow members, should you not have been to this gem in the Provincia de Cordoba, do put it on your “Things To Do” list Michael Dowling

PAST EVENTS Silent Auction Saturday 12th January About 30 ICE members and guests turned out for the Silent Auction at the clubhouse, organised by Julie and Richard Wood and helped by Stephanie Monahan There were many interesting items including some jewellery and ornaments, a coffee machine, a blender, a large mirror and a smart small suitcase. Some items causing more excitement than others with a few bidding wars taking place! Whilst we were deliberating on our bids, we were served with a very posh Ploughman’s Suppers. Finally, Julie called time and as each item was sold and paid for, we all noted the bargains. One excited lady appeared to have bid on numerous items which she won, much to the despair of her husband, who at one point was sitting with his head in his hands as she went to collect and pay for yet another. The event was a fun and successful social evening, making a good profit for the club. Thank you, Julie, Richard and Stephanie. Sheila Fox & Photos from Joan Thompson
From Yvonne Harrison - C.A.P. Singers
Please will you convey my grateful thanks through the magazine, to all members who supported our coffee morning concert on Thursday December the 13th. The C.A.P. Singers (including some I.C.E. members) really enjoyed themselves. Thank you for the donations from the committee and members, which totalled 150.00€. Our concerts plus donations this autumn now total, 1.735.00€ all of which will be going to Cudeca Hospice. Thank you once again to Sue Potter for inviting us.
PLEASE NOTE When going on trips by coach, unfortunately, we are only able to pickup and drop off at the designated pickup points, which are bus stops. We cannot stop at any other places to drop off. 9

CODEWORDS No. 17 (Answers Page 34) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. ACTIVITIES AT ICE Photography Group JPEG Camera Settings Worth Remembering (and using)
If you regularly take photos using the jpeg setting, or if your camera doesn’t offer the choice of RAW, making a few adjustments in your camera menu can make a difference in the look and feel of your photos. Using jpeg, your camera makes decisions regarding light, balance, contrast and will use the recipe it thinks best. By making a few adjustments in your camera menu, you can tweak the recipe to correct the cameras decisions when necessary, particularly when photographing indoors or in less than sunny situations outdoors, and give you a more personalised look to your photos. 1. White Balance. Almost all compact cameras, and all DSLR and mirrorless cameras have a white balance selection in the camera menu. You’ll recognize these options- auto, sunlight, cloudy, shade, incandescent, fluorescent. Most of the time, setting your camera to “auto” white balance works well. However, when indoors, where a space is lit by artificial light, it may pay to try to match your white balance setting to the type of lighting. If you notice your photos looking a bit blue, or orange, try changing your white balance setting. When outdoors, on overcast days, try the cloudy setting, which will warm up the colours, and remove any bluish cast. Experiment, but don’t forget to reset your white balance the next time you go out with your camera! 2. Saturation. Check your camera to see if you can adjust the colour saturation. This is another good way to customize your photos. Sometimes the object or scene you want to photograph will benefit from bright vivid colours, other times you may want to dial down colour saturation to give a softer, more retro look to your photo. You may find with your camera that you prefer a bit more colour saturation, especially if you photograph a lot of nature or landscape images. If you are able to adjust saturation in your camera menu experimenting with more or less saturation will give your photos a personalized look, without using ant photo editing programmes. 3. You may have noticed that your camera has a selection of Scene modes. These are usually displayed as pictograms. Each mode has tweaked your cameras auto setting in order to offer a better end result photo in various circumstances. Portrait mode, for example, will often provide slightly more colour saturation, and the colours will all be generally a bit warmer to enhance various skin tones. Landscape mode also will generally boost colour saturation. Night and Fireworks mode will tweak your cameras settings to give best results in darkness. If you like a high contrast look between highlights and shadows and your camera allows, try using the black and white monochrome mode in situations where there’s both bright light and hard shadows. Experimenting with these modes, and trying them out in various different situations gives you the opportunity to personalize your photos to your individual liking. **Point to remember. It’s best to experiment with tweaking your camera jpeg settings when practicing your photography. So when getting a good image is important, you’ve already seen the results of your tweakings and you can judge whether or not to use them. You can always reset your camera settings by dialling back to auto, or by changing them back in the camera menu. Submitted by Debra Coleman Two men are playing golf. One of them is about to take a swing when a funeral procession appears on the road next to the course. He stops mid-swing, takes off his cap, closes his eyes, and bows his head in contemplation. His opponent comments: "That must be the most touching thing I’ve ever seen. You are a very feeling man." The man, recovering himself, replies, "Yeah, well we were married 35 years." 24

MEMBERS ARTICLES Back In Time - 50 Years Ago - February 1969- Remember These? 9 February – The Boeing 747 "jumbo jet" is flown for the first time, taking off from the Boeing airfield at Everett, Washington. 18 February – pop star Lulu, 20, married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees at St James Church, Gerrards Cross. 24 February - The Mariner 6 Mars probe is launched from the United States. Submitted by Terry Smith (Bit of a quiet month this!!!) ON OUR TRAVELS AGAIN Submitted by Pat and Terry Smith We were going to keep this one as our secret but that would not have been fair. For the period over the New Year we travelled to Nerja. A town we have been to twice just for day trips and it rained most of the day on both occasions. So the weather, we hoped for the best being the time of year. We need not to have worried as each day was warm and sunny enough to sit outside. We stayed at the Hotel Marinas de Nerja Beach and Spa set on the eastern side of Nerja with backdrop of the foothills of the Sierra de Tejada and Almijara mountains. The hotel is a perfect base for exploring nearby Nerja www.hotelnoratmarinaspa.com The town of Nerja is about a 15 minute walk along a beach path passing 3 chiringuitos, 1 being open, and a small supermarket. The walk is fairly easy being flat, although 2 streams, 1 with bridge and 1 with stepping stones. The hotel has lots of free parking so you can drive to the town, or there is a bus stop right outside hotel. The hotel has 216 rooms and our standard room had living area with kitchenette (only used the kettle), separate bedroom behind double doors, and terrace, very clean and comfortable. The hotel has a buffet restaurant with a large range of foods, some of which are cooked fresh while you wait. However the star of our stay was the New Years Gala Night which at previous hotels we have stayed was still in the buffet restaurant. But not at this hotel, the dinner was served in what they called the banqueting hall, a massive room used for weddings, celebrations etc. On this occasion there was seating for over 400 all on round tables for 10/12 persons. It was a 4 course gala dinner served by very professional waiting staff, nicely cooked and hot. It was amazing just watching the organisation. So enough of our gloating, but if you are looking for a venue for next New Year as we know some of you do, we can recommend this hotel. A REMINDER FROM THE TICKET LADIES Unfortunately, we are unable to reserve tickets for any of our events, which are often advertised well in advance of the actual date, but the tickets are unable to be printed ready for sale until all costings/details are finalised. If you are interested in a forthcoming event, but know that you are going to be away when the tickets are likely to go on sale, we suggest you ask a friend to purchase them for you in your absence. That way you are also able to choose your table companions if applicable. We really don´t want anyone to miss out or be disappointed. Thank you. Margaret Whittley 26

ICE Club Golf Society To all our existing and new golfers: welcome to a great new year's golfing with the Ice Club Golf Society (ICGS). Over the Christmas and New Year period, the weather was generally kind to us for the twice weekly roll ups at Casares. The numbers were reduced, as expected, by a number of our regulars being away from the area. However we have had a very good turnout for the last three meetings with our new members now playing regularly. Next to the course there are now two large building projects which do produce some noise but do not interfere with our enjoyment. In fact the protective fence along the third hole fairway has saved quite a few penalty points, because anyone hitting this fence has the benefit of a 'free drop' when playing the next shot. Before the fence, the ball normally disappeared into rough ground at the cost of one penalty shot. There are now a number of dates fixed for this year: Wed 23rd of January. Away day at Almenara. Friday 1st March. The Martin O'Gorman Memorial Cup. A new and important competition in memory of our great golfing friend Martin O'Gorman who sadly died last March. All ICGS members are welcome to compete for a new trophy kindly donated by his wife Bernadette. It will be played at Casares as one of our normal roll up days. An entrance fee will be charged, as we propose a 'menu del dia' in the Brasserie afterwards to which friends and non golfers will be welcome. April 16th. Spring Cup and lunch. The golf will be played at Doña Julio and the lunch will be at Restaurante La Choza. September 24th. Autumn Cup and lunch. The golf will be at Valle Romano and the lunch at Restaurante La Choza. October 22-25th. Golf break to Costa Balleana (near Cadiz) for three nights and three rounds of golf. Full details available from Peter Henry. Other monthly away days will be announced as soon as arranged. Happy golfing! Contacts: Peter Henry: 93105180, Jan Blind: 603670330, Stephen McMurtry: 608854505

BREXIT From Citizens’ Advice Bureau Spain with kind permission of Myra Azzopardi So sad to not be able to reassure those in the UK contacting us privately who are hoping to relocate to Spain before the withdrawal date. Most of these are aware of the real possibility of a "no deal" scenario coming from the UK government. One family in particular hoping to make all arrangements including obtaining a padron for next month. Depending on the areas these UK nationals are hoping to move to, it has been difficult letting them know that there is no guarantee that they will be set up or even obtain an appointment for their residency application at the foreigners offices before the end of March. One enquirer asked if the Spanish government have any contingency plans to allow them to apply before the end of March. Not a hope! I would appreciate no comments suggesting that nobody should worry or that nothing is changing thank you. From the CAB website 4.11.2018 The British government are sending out hundreds of emails for the various sections on a no deal scenario. This in reference to Residency and Driving Licences. Though we echo what the UK government are saying about the intention of reaching an agreement but are preparing in the case that no deal is reached. We have already made suggestions on residency and UK/EU driving licences but we reiterate. Residency: 1.Those who have not taken out residency and are residing in Spain as their habitual home, should consider doing so. Please register on the padron at your earliest convenience and proceed from there. 2. Those who have automatically acquired permanent residency (five years of registered residency) should consider updating their residency certificates if these do not yet include that you are permanent residents. Residency should be taken from the date you resided in Spain and not only by your date of registration. Please do not expect the administrative offices to adhere to the latter. The permanent status will assist as some of the civil servants are not aware of the residency laws considering that the EU registration certificates expire after five years. Some residents due to their status, may be entitled to permanent residency earlier. Details below. 3. Registered residents who are not on the padron, should register immediately as it is an obligation. 4. Lost, disfigured or stolen residency certificates should be renewed. 5. An expired older photo card version of the residency card will not be renewed as a rule. Received notification recently that a couple did manage to renew their long expired photo cards. Not obligatory for the foreigners office to do this but worth a try. UK Driving Licence: 1. Changing a UK licence may not be necessary for some who have not completed two years of residency. We do now advise that these are changed for a Spanish permit soonest if you intend to continue to reside here post Brexit. No deal will not ensure any agreements between Spain and UK. Third country nationals with no agreement between countries, have to sit a test to avail of a Spanish licence. 2. Even if an agreement is reached, the end of the transition period will be December 2020 when renewal or changing of UK licence is not clear. 3. Driving licences renewed in the UK whilst resident in Spain, will not be valid. EU have asked EU members states to be lenient in these cases. There is no guarantee the DGT will change your permit, even less so once the UK has left the EU. continued 30
BREXIT cont’d Spanish Driving Licence and moving (back) to the UK: If no agreement has been reached and you´ve obtained your driving licence in Spain, you will most likely have to re-sit your exam to obtain a UK licence. If you originally obtained your licence in the UK, renewed it for a Spanish one while resident here, and move back, you will be able to re-exchange for a UK licence if they return to live in the UK. From El Pais Spanish government finalising plans ahead of a possible hard Brexit Madrid will launch a battery of measures in January aimed at softening the effects of the United Kingdom crashing out of the European Union in March without a deal Citizens Spain counts on the largest community of British residents in the EU (around 300,000), and a high number of Spaniards living in the UK (116,000). The Spanish government is working on the basis that, even without a negotiated withdrawal, London will be interested in reciprocally maintaining the rights of this significant number of people. On the basis of the recommendations that have been published by the European Commission in order to maintain rights intact, the Spanish government is seeking to reach deals that will guarantee rights to residency, healthcare and the recognition of academic qualifications. Sources consulted by EL PAÍS say that this will be the area with the least disagreement between the two sides. Gibraltar. The issue related to Brexit that has consumed the most diplomatic efforts is the one that the government considers to be the best covered. The Spanish government believes that, even if the general Withdrawal Agreement were to be rejected – the document contains a specific protocol on Gibraltar – the bilateral arrangements that Madrid and London have signed up to relating to the British Overseas Territory would remain in force. That would guarantee an understanding on the four key issues that cause friction between Spain and The Rock - the movement of citizens, tobacco smuggling, tax issues and environmental disputes. It is yet to be seen whether the UK will accept these memorandums should the Brexit deal between Brussels and London be dashed. https://elpais.com/elpais/2018/12/26/inenglish/1545811776_474634.html

Planning for the future
By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks
As this is our first article in ICE for 2019, I thought we would go with a New Year theme. A new year is a time when many people reflect on the previous 12 months and look ahead to what the coming year will bring. You may have set goals for the year, such as exercising or planning a dream holiday. When it comes to financial planning, however, focusing on just one year is not nearly enough, you need to plan ahead for the future. While you should always consider current developments that could impact your finances, good wealth management is all about establishing your goals, both short and long-term, then setting up a strategic plan to achieve them. Planning for a financially secure retirement For many of us, the ultimate goal is to be able to enjoy our dream retirement.
Many retirees favour low-risk, ‘safer’ investments like bank deposits, but if you have a long retirement ahead of you, this is risky. Slowly but surely the cost of living increases every year and can erode your spending power over the longer term. Your savings need to earn enough to keep pace with inflation, which is a struggle with today’s low interest rates. Start by establishing what your aims are and obtain an objective analysis of your risk profile. Working with an experienced and regulated adviser, then build a portfolio, with a careful spread of investments across asset classes, regions, companies, currencies etc, designed to achieve your goals within your risk tolerance. Planning to protect your wealth from tax When considering your income needs you also need to factor in taxation. It is important to review your tax planning to make sure it is up to date and takes account of any tax reforms in Spain, UK and anywhere else that affect you. Planning for the inevitable Don’t risk leaving your estate planning too late. Again, what are your goals? Who you want to inherit your estate, in what amounts, when and how? Take advice on how to achieve your wishes for your heirs, based on the inheritance laws and taxes of Spain and UK, and to make the process as straightforward and tax-efficient as possible for them. Planning for Brexit We cannot talk about planning for 2019 without mentioning Brexit. This is a good time to consider if you need to adjust your financial planning. If you are living in Spain your financial planning should be set up for Spain. Do you own too many UK investments? Are all your savings in Sterling, putting you at mercy of exchange rate swings? Are you hoping to transfer your pension out of the UK? Be aware that many speculate the UK could widen the 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ after Brexit to tax transfers within the EU. Whether it is investments, tax or pension planning, seek professional advice to ensure you do what works best for your personal situation. Use a specialist adviser who can provide holistic solutions to give you peace of mind that your financial affairs are in order, for today and the future. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com 33

Tale of a Lost Senior Citizen When I went to lunch today, I noticed an old man sitting on a park bench sobbing his eyes out. I stopped and asked him what was wrong. He told me, 'I have a 22 year old wife at home. She rubs my back every morning and then gets up and makes me pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit and freshly ground coffee.' I continued, 'Well, then why are you crying?' He added, 'She makes me homemade soup for lunch and my favourite biscuits, cleans the house and then watches sports TV with me for the rest of the afternoon.' I said, 'Well, why are you crying?' He said, 'For dinner she makes me a gourmet meal with wine and my favourite dessert and then we cuddle until the small hours.' I inquired, 'Well then, why in the world would you be crying?' He replied, 'I can't remember where I live.'

MEMBERS ARTICLES The Other I.C.E. - the problem with speaking in initials! Fifteen years ago, the Federal Government of the USA set up a new Department, The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency. It employs about 20,000 people and runs on a budget of just under eight billion US dollars – that’s quite big! Operating from Washington DC it is tasked to enforce immigration and customs laws throughout the US and to investigate criminal and terrorist activities of foreign nationals living in the US. It has offices in another 46 countries. It was set up following ‘9/11’ in 2001, with the formation of the Department of Homeland Security, and deals with issues such as human rights violations, human smuggling, human, drugs and arms trafficking, document and benefit fraud, money laundering, computer crimes that include child pornography matters through the internet, trafficking counterfeit pharmaceuticals, immigration and identity documents and international cultural and antiques crimes. These are issues handled by the Homeland Security Investigation, sometimes using their armed Special Response Team. One can imagine US newscasters saying: – The SRT of the HSI branch of the ICE stage a SWAT at BBVA HQ on HRV issues. Whereas, on intelligence matters it would be the Field Intelligence Group, leading to: The FIG of the HSI branch of ICE focus on HUMINT (human intelligence). You should be aware that ICE also runs the Office of State, Local and Tribal Coordination, that fosters relationships with various agencies under the Agreement of Cooperation in Communities to Enhance Safety and Security. Yes, the OSLTC of ICE oversees ACCESS. I wonder who would understand it. And before you reach the wrong conclusion, all this was set up before Mr Trump took office. Personally, I would prefer to have my ICE in a glass of something on a hot summer day – at ICE.
