President’s Letter In December and January we said our final farewell to John Avis, Dan Cook, Mavis Tolfree, & Corinne Gustaffson. Our thoughts are with their families at this very sad time. Another year has started and that means membership is due, I hope you have all renewed yours, I am pleased to say we have quite a few new members already, some are already volunteering to help out, thank you. It should be an interesting year as we will begin to be informed how Brexit is going to affect us all. As per normal at this time of the year we have many events, activities and trips planned. The Krafty Club, History Group, Whist and Dancercize are proving to be popular new events. Why not give them a try?

We have 2 big events this month, the red & black meal cooked by Brenda and her team and the drama Getting Along, a comedy, performed by our very own members. Buy your tickets now as they're going fast. Our usual pancake race is this month too. Just turn up and join in. Pancakes with various toppings will be available to buy. Our trip to Jerez Bodega has had to be postponed until 2nd March. Joan Thompson is standing down as Vice President at the AGM. We therefore need somebody to replace her. Ideally this should be someone who will be willing to stand as President in 2021 There will be 2 other Committee vacancies as Mike Dowling is standing down due to other commitments and we were already 1 person short. Please think long and hard about whether you would be willing to stand. We could do with the help. Although not a committee post, Richard Wood is stepping down from the position of Advertising Manager and we need to replace him. Whatever you do, enjoy. Sue Potter, President Please can I remind everybody that the role of the Welfare Officer is to deliver cards and gifts to members who are ill at home or in hospital. It is not her duty to sort out money problems, health problems nor a taxi service. Also, please do not contact her before 9,00am or after 6,00pm. Please do not abuse Wilma's kindness. Thank you. Sue Potter - President

If Benny and Björn from ABBA had been called Steve and Dave, they would have been known as ASDA Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

Membership

It's that time of the year when your membership should have been renewed by now. Please may I remind you all of the rules concerning guests and membership. People are entitled to 3 visits to the Club before we expect you to join, this is in a lifetime and not every year. Once you have become members unless you have returned to UK and are only visiting for 1 or 2 weeks you cannot then attend events as a guest, visit Club or borrow DVDs or books unless you re-join. This of course does not apply to family or friends who visit members for 1 or 2 weeks. May I also remind you that if 1 partner joins, the other partner cannot come as a guest. I hope you all agree that whether you are in Spain for 3, 6 or 12 months €35 is value for money, less than €6 per month if you are only here for 6 months. Sue Potter - President 5

It will be your responsibility to see that the form is returned to the Secretary not less than 24hours before the A.G.M. MICKEY’S CHERIMOYA SUNSET

1 part spiced rum - if you can’t use sailor jerry’s - “set sail with Captain Morgan and never leave dry land”! ½ Freshly squeezed lime 2 parts smoothied cherimoya flesh Top up with fiery ginger beer Smoothe the rum, lime juice and cherimoya flesh (The seeds are not to be included in the juice. Ensure there are none in the liquid). Pour over crushed ice and add fiery ginger beer. Do enjoy! NOTA BENE Should any third party suggest that this drink is for wimps, let it be known that third party is uttering a falsehood unless the so-called wimp is a sensible spirit tippler who recognises the third party as a nincompoop. I would like to thank everybody for their condolences, cards, flowers, phone calls and big hugs on receiving the sad news that my lovely John had died just before Christmas. John had been a member of ICE for years, both of us enjoying many trips and social occasions. He enjoyed playing golf weekly with Les' gang and acted a few parts for the ICE Drama Society. I didn't renew his membership for the past few years as, unfortunately, he became ill with vascular dementia and has spent the last two years mostly in bed. I get comfort from the fact that he left me before he got worse, though it was still devastating when it happened. So, a BIG thank you to you all for your support and kindness. It has been helpful and appreciated. Sandy Avis 11

PUZZLES

CODEWORDS (Answers Page 22) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 22) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 12

PAST EVENTS Christmas Lunch December 12th.

Before our Christmas lunch we were treated to renditions of our favourite songs and Carols by the Canto Libre Choir. Their joyful music raised money for charity as well as our spirits. What a lovely way to start our annual Christmas lunch. The tables were beautifully decorated and set up for over sixty people with Christmas tablecloths and crackers just waiting to be pulled. We all donned our paper hats, read the mottos and excitedly scrambled for the gifts inside. Just like giddy children. One doesn’t have to be young to enjoy oneself. Once we were settled the starter was served. The Vegetarian version of Cappelletti en Brodo soup, sprinkled with Parmigiana. Delicious. Two helpers from each table served and cleared away the plates throughout the meal. This system seemed to work very well. The turkey and ALL the trimmings came next. The plates were beautifully presented with turkey, roast potatoes, stuffing, sausage, carrots, Brussels sprouts, honey roast parsnips, cranberry sauce and gravy. There was also delicious sea bass as an alternative. Wow! What a feast. This was restaurant quality food. The Christmas pudding ( or apple pie ) followed with a choice of cream, brandy sauce or custard. Again, excellent food. Mince pie anyone ?? In between courses we had a guess the “ Chocs in the box” competition and, at the end of the meal, a quiz to keep the old brain cells ticking over. The raffle prizes were then drawn and three lucky people won a choice of hampers full of festive goodies. Well done! All proceeds went to the club. Having never cooked a Christmas lunch ( always been lucky enough to go elsewhere! ) I can fully appreciate all the effort and hard work that went into such a successful meal. My thanks must go to Sue and Rob and all their Santa’s Little Helpers, too numerous to mention. Thank you ALL for a wonderful afternoon. Submitted by Helen Rumsey.

ATTENTION ! Granada Trip Update There are a couple of changes to our visit on the 22nd March. We have been unable to get a group booking for the Alhambra Palace, so we are asking members to go online themselves if they want tickets. Some people have been several times so have decided to enjoy Granada town instead. Another change is that our Hotel, the Guadalupe, is having the kitchens refurbished. So although we will still have breakfast in the Hotel, I have arranged for us on the nights of the 22nd and 23rd to have the Buffet Dinner at the Hotel Alixares, just a few doors up the road from our Hotel (menus to follow). Dinners are included in your ticket price. On the night of the 23rd I hope to book the Gypsy caves. The night of the 24th is free After Breakfast on the 24th the coach will deliver us to the Science Park, which is amazing. Look it up online, there is so much to do. Is time running out for tax-free pension transfers?

By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks If you are already retired or have chosen to retire in Spain, take steps now to review your pension options before Brexit changes the rules. The option to transfer overseas Many expatriates have chosen to transfer their UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Transferring can consolidate several UK pensions under one tax-efficient roof and provide greater investment diversification than UK schemes, with more freedom to vary income. Many QROPS also offer multi-currency flexibility to hold and draw your funds in your currency of choice, thereby minimising exchange rate risk. And, while most UK pensions are payable only to your spouse on death, a QROPS lets you include other heirs in estate planning. Taxation of QROPS transfers Currently, most expatriates in the EU can transfer to a QROPS completely tax-free, but there are two key situations in which tax is payable. First, if your combined UK pension benefits exceed the UK’s lifetime allowance – currently £1.055 million – even non-residents face a 25% tax penalty on anything transferred over the limit. Once in a QROPS, funds would never be subject to LTA charges – or any UK taxes – again. Second, if you transfer to a QROPS outside the EU/EEA (European Economic Area), the UK would apply a 25% ‘overseas tax charge’ on the whole transferred amount. While expatriates in Spain can escape this tax by transferring to a QROPS based here or in another EU area, such as Malta, this may change when the Brexit transition period ends in December 2020. A closing tax-free window? As Brexit eliminates Britain’s current EU commitments – including freedom of movement for capital – the Treasury gains more scope to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad. Many speculate this will prompt the UK to impose widespread penalties on pension transfers, even within the EU/EEA. Without certainty that tax-free transfers will continue, it is sensible for anyone considering transferring to act sooner rather than later, especially as the administrative process for pension transfers can take several months to complete. However, transferring is not appropriate for everyone and there are differences between QROPS providers and jurisdictions that can affect the benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer comparable benefits to QROPS, so take personalised, regulated advice to establish the most suitable approach for you. Pensions are likely to play an important part in your long-term financial security, so make sure you only use a fully authorised and regulated provider to avoid pension scams and unprotected investments. Your adviser should take into account your unique circumstances, income requirements, goals and tolerance for risk – as well as the cross-border tax implications – to establish the right solution for you and your family. Even if transferring is not right for you, with so much uncertainty still ahead, now is the time to review your pension arrangements so you can secure the retirement of your choice in Spain. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com 31
