President’s Letter We have had to say our final farewell to Anne Lamander & Michael Shelton. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this very sad time. Well, here we are again in another lockdown and the Club is closed for the foreseeable future but the good news is the vaccine for over 70's has been brought forward from April to March here in Spain. You will see that we have put a calendar together as usual for February but , of course, this is very flexible depending on the regulations. Up to date information is always posted on the website and FB so that you are aware of what's going on. We have moved the Welcome Back lunch to Sunday, 21st February which means the Cabaret Lunch has been postponed to April. Tuesday 16th February is Pancake Day, We will hopefully still be making pancakes but instead of the race round the pool, we will be tossing them in the Club. March, is, of course, the AGM. We are hoping to hold it on the 11th and I am delighted that Sheila Fox has agreed to put her name forward as President. I am sure you will all support her. Alan Lucas and Danny Hackston are also putting their names forward as Committee members, Ted and Ian will be pleased that they have more male support. Alan and Danny are very enthusiastic and hard working members and have lots of ideas so I'm sure you will support them too. There is still a space left on the Committee if you think you can give time and are willing to work -please see Maggie for a form. We are still looking for a Vice-President: you have to have been a member for 2 consecutive years to fulfil the criteria, Sheila will need support. I am also pleased to announce that Wilma is willing to take over the role as Catering Manager, but she will need more support from members by helping in the kitchen. May I remind you that if you have recently returned from the UK you are not allowed in the Club for 14 days. Also, if you do have a Covid test and it is positive, please let me know as soon as possible especially if you have been in the Club within the previous 14 days so that we can inform other members to be aware of any symptoms that they may show. Keep Well, Keep Safe
Sue Potter, President

PUZZLES
Like puzzles— There’s a new one every day on the ICE website! CODEWORDS (Answers Page 30) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 30) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 10

PAST EVENTS PRE CHRISTMAS LUNCH A great pre Christmas lunch was held at Mini India attended by 32 members. As you can see by the photo some people had more fun than others. No, Ken wasn't doing a striptease, Wilma decided to spill the wine not once but twice all over Ken so he had to take his shirt off, well that was his excuse anyway. After the lockdown it was good to see friends from other municipals. Thank you Diane Hackett for arranging. Submitted by Sue Potter

The old ones are the best…. In the early days of WW2 two young sailors found themselves in a military prison. They get talking about why they were there. ‘I was picked up by the MPs after a fight in the docks – and I’d been drinking. And here I am! What about you?’ ‘Insubordination, they said. To the Admiral. It’s not fair. I was telling the truth. We were in dry dock getting the tubes cleaned and we had shore leave, so I decided I’d go and see my uncle who lived nearby. He was a miner and, coming from South Wales, I was interested seeing where he worked. Well, to cut a long story short, he took me to his mine, and arranged for me to go down with him. I got changed into some old clothes and I left my uniform in the changing room. I had a great day – got issued with a lamp, down in the lift, long walk to the coal face, and the stables for the pit ponies and back up in the lift to the surface. We got showered and back into my uniform, and had a meal in the mine canteen. Chatted to everyone there, all friendly like. Bloody great, it was. ‘I got back to the docks as it was getting dark, and sort of bumped into the Captain who got out of his taxi as I walked through the gates. He was carrying a golf bag and when he saw me, asked if I would take the bag back to the ship as he had something else to do. Well, you don’t argue with your skipper, do you, so I said, ‘Yes sir, of course, sir.’ and carried on to the ship. ‘As I approached the gangway I spotted the Admiral on board, talking to the Number One. So I made sure I looked respectable, hat straight, all buttons done up, boots polished on my trouser legs. You know. ‘“Good afternoon, sailor,” the admiral said as I saluted him. And then he added, “Been playing golf, eh?” ‘And I said, “No sir, I’ve been down a coal mine.” And before I knew it, the Number One had me arrested for insubordination. And here I am.’

A TOUR OF BIG BEN You all know that ‘Big Ben’ is the nickname given to the largest of the bells, and only by default is the tower itself so called. The earlier name, the Clock Tower, was changed to the Elizabeth Tower on the Diamond Jubilee of H.M. The Queen in 2012, harmonising with the Victoria Tower that was named to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of H.M. Queen Victoria in 1897. So, where did all this start? The Old Royal Palace had occupied the site from the 11th C and provided all English monarchs from King Canute with a home, up to and including Henry VIII. From then, the buildings were used for governing the Nation – in its various configurations. Then on 16 October 1834 a catastrophic fire destroyed all but Westminster Hall, and a few smaller buildings, leaving the English parliament without a home. (The story of the fire itself will follow). The reconstruction was completed in May 1859, the design being in NeoGothic style by architect Charles Barry, and the Clock Tower by Augustus Pugin. The tower was built from the inside, each level being built from platforms that were progressively raised; no exterior scaffolding was used.
The Roman figures for number four, is ‘IV’, not ‘IIII’ as was fashionable at the time to balance the ‘8’ that was written as ‘VIII’. Much of the cast iron frame is protected with gold leaf, as is the inscription at the base of each face: ‘DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM,’ which means O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First. At present, the whole of the Palace of Westminster is being renovated, so there are a few comments included here to try to keep abreast of any foreseen changes of significance. For example, the ‘black’ of the clock frame will be coloured Prussian blue, as was the original colouring. 23
‘Big Ben’ is the largest of the tower's five bells and weighs 13.5 tons. The bell's nickname is thought to have been after Sir Benjamin Hall MP, who oversaw its installation. Four quarter bells chime at 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour and just before Big Ben tolls on the hour. The clock uses its original Victorian mechanism and is famous for its reliability. The designers were Edmund Beckett Denison, and George Airy. Construction was entrusted to clockmaker Edward John Dent. The pendulum is installed within an enclosed windproof box beneath the clock-room, and on top of the pendulum is a small stack of old penny coins; these are to adjust the time of the clock. Adding or removing a penny will change the clock's speed by 0.4 seconds per day. The clock is hand wound (taking about 1.5 hours) three times a week. The original ‘Big Ben’ cracked when tested and a replacement was recast and first chimed in July 1859; then, in September the same year, it too cracked and the hours were struck on the lowest of the quarter bells until it was repaired. Big Ben has chimed with a slightly different tone ever since, and is still in use today with the crack still not properly repaired. And finally, a few curiosities. The tune of the chimes is that of Great St Mary's church, Cambridge, and supposedly a variation on a phrase from the air "I know that my Redeemer liveth" in Handel's Messiah. The notional words are written on a plaque on the wall of the clock room. One of the requirements for the clock was that the first stroke of the hour bell should be correct to within one second per day relating to Greenwich Mean Time. Whenever Parliament was sitting the Union Flag was flown from the top of the Elizabeth Tower during daylight hours and since the 1880s, the Ayrton Light, originally a gas light, was illuminated when Parliament was sitting at night. Since 2009, the Union Flag has flown 24 hours every day. During the refurbishment of the Palace, various jobs will have been farmed out across the Nation, the tiles to Halifax, the clock mechanism to the Lake District and the 28 lights in each clock-face made locally instead of being specially manufactured in The Netherlands. And, of course, all the scaffolding is British! Submitted by Geoff Morgan 24
