Editorial: Well that was a lot wetter and cooler start this year for May, not used to that. If another person said ‘oh we need it’ although I agree, it was getting a bit annoying! It was also a shock to the system after experiencing temperatures approaching 30°C on the Jerez trip. It was however a pleasant surprise to find the reservoirs beside the road to Jerez were not as low as expected to see. So activities at the club will be getting a bit quieter now for the summer but many of us will still be around. Have a great journey to those tripping off and look forward to seeing you all again soon. Regards

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR I.C.E club is managed and run entirely by volunteers, including catering and bar staff, event organisers and your voted committee. Presidents Letter After the long awaited rains the weather has turned warmer the evenings getting longer and some Club members have returned to the UK. By the time you read this, work on the lift will have started, hopefully not disrupting you too much, the lift is scheduled to be completed by the second week of July, but hey, this is Spain so watch this space! In July we are taking a trip to see the dolphins in Algeciras bay, this is the first time we have done this so I hope you will support it by buying tickets. We have booked 2 boats for our sole use. This month Maggie Whittley is resurrecting the Summer Dinner and Dance to be held at Kokomo, please give her your support, unfortunately Rob and I will be in UK, but I am sure it will be a great success. Don't forget your Portugal trip has to be paid by the end of August. Enjoy San Juan and I will see you in July. Sue

The Club Welcomes New Members: Marie Mould Michael Lewis UK HEALTH CARE Last year I cracked the bone in my kneecap whilst in the UK and had to be taken to Rugby hospital. On registering I was only asked my name but not asked for any documentation. A few weeks ago I received a bill for ÂŁ460 for the treatment I received. I contested this by stating that I was a British pensioner but resident in Spain. I was then asked to produce a copy pf my European health card and this I photocopied and sent by e mail. This was rejected and was told I needed a Spanish health card. With the help of Sue Jenkins, who is fluent in Spanish and an active I.C.E. member, I made an appointment with the Social Security office in Estepona which was set two weeks hence. This interview was very definite and informative as information was sought direct by computer at the time of the interview in both Malage and Madrid when I was told that I did not qualify for a Spanish Health Card as I had never worked in Spain and did not receive any Spanish pension. I then contacted a Mr Abdul at Rugby hospital with this information, who then requested that I needed to produce an S1 form. I then contacted the pension office in the UK who informed me that because I had a UK European health card this was proof that I had completed a SI form. I was then given another UK telephone number who suggested I pay the bill and they would send me a claim form, but before I received this form from the UK I received an e mail from Mr Abdul at Rugby hospital that I was not required to pay this bill. Relief, followed by anger because of the time and money wasted through inefficiency and lack of knowledge by a hospital authority. In a nutshell - British citizens receiving a British pension need to complete an S1 card acquired from the British Pension Office in order to receive a European UK health card. This card is for use when travelling in Europe BUT not in the UK. All that is needed when visiting the UK is your National Insurance number. I must say though, when I next travel to the UK I will take with me my European Health card PLUS my NI number. Regards Barbara Salisbury 5

The Real Valencian Paella Paella is thought to have originated in the 10th century when the Moors first began rice cultivation. Rice became a staple food, often combined it with meat or fish, but never both. In the 19th century the ingredients of paella changed, to include rabbit, chicken, duck and even snails. The complete list of ingredients in this era was short-grain white rice (Bomba rice) chicken, rabbit, snails, duck, butter beans, runner beans, artichoke (a substitute for runner beans in the winter), tomatoes, fresh rosemary, sweet paprika, fresh saffron and garlic, salt, olive oil and water. That sounds different to the paella we get in the little Spanish restaurants on the Costa del Sol. Paella, like a lot of classic recipes, often adulterated as years go on for simplicity, speed and budget. How does an original Valencian paella end up with rice coloured yellow with food colouring, frozen peas and sausage? First and foremost you will need a special paella pan called a paellera or just a paella. The special pan is essential! Ingredients: 1 tablespoon good olive oil ½ whole free range chicken, cut into 6 pieces ½ rabbit, cleaned and cut into 4 pieces 1 head garlic, cloves separated peeled & sliced 2 tomatoes, finely chopped ½ kilo fresh green beans sliced thinly Canned butter beans ( approx. 400g) 1 teaspoon mild paprika 1 generous pinch saffron threads 1 flat dessert spoon of dried thyme 1 flat dessert spoon chopped rosemary, Approx 500g of Bomba rice (paella rice) Heat a paella pan over medium-high heat, and coat with the olive oil. Add the chicken, rabbit and garlic; cook and stir until nicely browned. Move the browned meat to the sides of the pan, and add the tomato, butter beans, and the sliced green beans. Season with paprika, and mix well. Fill the paella pan almost to the top with water. This is to help you to determine how much rice to add. Bring to a boil. Simmer for about 1 hour to make a nice broth. Season with a generous amount of salt, and just enough saffron to make a nice yellow colour. Season with the thyme and rosemary. The secret is to make a rich tasting broth that will soak into the rice to make it delicious. Stir in half as much rice as the amount of water in the pan. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer until all of the liquid has been absorbed (about 20 minutes). Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Members Letter Finally I'm returning to the UK after 6 amazing months in Estepona and Marbella. The highlight of my stay has been joining ICE and making many new friends. Please convey my thanks to the committee and club members for their friendship and valued assistance. I am going to Brighton on a croquet coaching course followed by a tournament. Then I have the honour to be selected to be part of the Scotland Team to play in Bath against 7 other countries including Spain. This is tier 2 out of 3. England and Wales are in tier 1. Then the following week I have been selected to play in the European Championship near Exmouth in Devon. I take great pleasure playing in these prestige events these. I hope this will create some interest from ICE members, even if some other sport or hobby is your interest. The results will be listed on wcf.com (World Croquet Federation). With good wishes for all the club’s many projects, George Geis 8

NORTHERN LIGHTS - MEMBERS TRIP TO ICELAND - Submitted by Sandy Avis I have always wanted to see the Northern Lights and so off we went to Iceland – and what an amazing country it is. Iceland has much more to offer than Aurora Borealis.........natural hot springs, waterfalls, beautiful fjords, and magical geysers, glaciers. In other words a paradise but in the cold. Only 330,000 residents, with about 122,000 living in one of the smallest capitals in the world - Reykjavik. It was cold but not as cold as we had imagined. Everybody speaks English, all the signs were Icelandic/English. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights – truly magical. It seems they dance around the sky all day but you only see them on dark clear nights usually between September and April. We swam in the Blue Lagoon – it was wonderful in the natural hot water, and went to see the geysers shooting up high – again amazing. There are just endless miles and miles of very barren grey lava fields with beautiful snow covered mountains in the distance. You rarely see any grass, cows or sheep. The law in Iceland does not allow any imported animals to keep the purity. Their small horses are a delight. Seems the Vikings when arriving in Iceland more than a thousand years ago brought their small Nordic horses with them. Because of isolation, the breed remains pure. Pigs are extinct. We saw only 4 dogs and one cat whilst there. They boast their water is the best in the world and the air clean and pure. About 90% of houses are heated with geothermal energy and about 12% of their electricity also comes from the hot waters. Even some of their roads have hot pipes under. A huge number of activities to choose from – horse riding, skiing, snow scooters, iceberg boat tours, snorkelling, river rafting, glacier hiking, whale watching, and loads more. In June you can play golf at night as it stays light under the midnight sun. Plenty of restaurants, art galleries, museums, a national park, even a zoo etc., but Iceland is expensive – about £6 for a glass of wine or £10 for a beer and meals are highly priced – but hey-ho we were on holiday and everything we paid for was worth it! The cars have nail tyres all winter then change to normal tyres in summer. Lots of the houses were prefab type and some made of corrugated iron as were shops. The Icelanders are very artistic as lots of houses and shops were painted with wonderful designs and colours. Iceland boasts the oldest parliament in the world and became Christians 1,000 years ago. We passed the volcano that gave us 6 weeks of ash a few years back. It is due to erupt in 5 years time. There are 40 active volcanoes. Although Iceland is known for its fishing industry being a world leader (we were told a fish can be caught in Iceland and be on a plate in New York or Italy in 24 hours), tourism has increased by 20% in three years, incomes increasing 30%. We never saw a policeman and found out there is very little crime – 2 murders in a year. I asked if bears lived in the mountains – no, but they do have Arctic foxes, reindeer, minx even. Quite a few American tourists probably due to Iceland being halfway between America and Russia. Their shops are full of heavy attractive knitwear – hats, scarves, socks, jumpers all beautifully made, leathers, furs. We were told that unlike ourselves who usually meet up in pubs/ bars, it is part of Icelandic culture to visit thermal swimming pools and this is where they socialise – a good place for tourists to meet up with the locals. The airport Keflavik was voted the best airport in Europe in 2014. Their tourist board quotes 97% satisfaction which I completely agree with...............go to Iceland, you will not regret it. 10

PAST EVENTS Wednesday 13th April - Day Trip to Seville - Fiesta Time Carole and I made this our first priority when we arrived in Seville, with the I.C.E coach trip, the Palacio de las DueĂąas. It was very interesting, especially all the history of the place that many world famous people have visited, and of course the fact that the Duke of Alba still lives in the upper part of the palace. It is only the ground floor and the gardens which are open to the public, but never the less there is still much to see and admire, one being where the late Duchess practised her "Flamenco dancing." It is an amazing place surrounded by narrow streets and old buildings and it could easily be missed. When we were just about to leave we noticed the horses and carriages being made ready and overheard that the Duke was to leave for the feria, so we waited and were rewarded with the photos. We also found a very old hostelry, "El Rinconcillo", Calle Gerona 40, that dates back to 1670, when we arrived the bar on the ground floor was absolutely packed, however we were lucky enough to get a table in the restaurant upstairs and enjoyed an excellent lunch. The decor in the bar area would appear to be dated back a few centuries and exudes atmosphere and great charm. A recommended place to visit in Seville, and it is also very near the palace. Thanks to Joan for organising another successful trip. Submitted by John Murray Saturday 23rd April St Georges Day Celebration Dinner A great evening enjoyed by around fifty members was topped off by a most enjoyable 3 course dinner prepared over many hours by Brenda and her kitchen team. Also Mac for making the delicious pate. It must have been as difficult as St George slaying the dragon! Members were most complementary about the roast beef and have requested a repeat for a future Thursday lunch, so watch this space. Many thanks to Brenda, her team, the servers, and those who helped prepare the room. Thanks also to Rob and Sue who manned the bar. Saturday 30th April Ramblers End Of Season Lunch - Benahavis What a really pleasant day for a ramble and a lunch for over 20 members. The sun was up and pleasantly warm for sitting out in the square. A very enjoyable lunch, 3 course including tip for just 10.50â‚Ź. Benahavis is a very pleasant village to stroll around, many flowers, views, and restaurants you would think more of these than houses! Thanks Sue for the organising. 11

PAST EVENTS 2nd to 4th May - Trip to Feria del Caballo, Jerez de la Frontera Day 1: Uneventful journey after the usual pickups on a lovely sunny day, coffee stop on the way. Unfortunately the coach could not be driven to the expected drop off in Sanlucar de Barrameda for the hotel due to the very narrow roads of the old town. As it was about a 10 minute walk 2 taxis were called for those unable to do this. Then there was a most disappointing episode as others jumped in thosetaxis leaving the disabled, including Di in wheelchair with leg in plaster from a previous fall, and Pat with walking frame, behind on the pavement for some considerable time before further taxis could be called. You know who you were. So we settled into hotel Posada de Palacio, a very old building with lots of character, and went to the adjoining hotel restaurant El Espejo for lunch. Here the bombshell was dropped, some rooms would not have water due to a problem that could not be resolved for number of days and we all would have to move to another hotel. There was some upset but to be fair it was dealt with very well by Wilma and Sue, so thanks to them. So the taxis were again called to move those less able to walk, a larger one to take wheelchairs, and once again the disabled were left out, and had to wait again before a suitable taxi could be called. So the next stop was the Abba Palacio De Arazon hotel, this time an elegant converted manor house, upscale hotel also with character. Rooms were modern and pleasant, there was a large indoor courtyard with pictures of before and after conversion, and a very large outside terrace, and even better the coach could stop right outside. There was then just 15 minutes to settle in before boarding the coach to the Feria. The Jerez Horse Fair (Feria de Caballo) is an exciting and lively event that brings the entire city and visitors to the Gonzalo Hontoria Fairgrounds, which cover 52,000 square metres, giving ample space for the finest horses of Jerez as synonymous with the city as sherry and flamenco, to show off their moves to the crowds who flock to the two hundred or so casetas (never seen so many bars in one place! And very very noisy!) which are mainly open to the public, and other fairground and market attractions. We just managed to see the fabulous illuminations before returning to the hotel. Day 2: After what was quite a pleasant continental breakfast 22 members walked through part of the old town to reach Bodegas La Cigarrera, good map reading by Ted. We were greeted by our English speaking guide who explained she was expecting a party of 40 so had already poured the sherry, no problem says Wilma ’we can deal with that!’ A lovely old bodega established in 1758. After the tour we sat in the tavern area, shady and under the vines, to sample a ‘few sherries’ and buy from the shop. For lunch we all boarded the coach to travel to the port area where there was a number of lovely restaurants overlooking the river and in the distance Doñana National Park. Once again a pleasant sunny day to sit out and enjoy a good meal with friends. After lunch it was time to board the Real Fernando open top boat for our trip along the river side of the park. The boat trip to Doñana visits both the nature reserve and the national park. The trip alongside the beach of the park was interesting with both for the flora, fauna and some bird life. The boat stops for two short walks through the park, this was interesting, and the English speaking guide very informative. We also had informative information in English as we travelled, on the return journey some watched the big screen in the lounge showing the life in the park. A great value 3 hour boat trip for just 12€. >>13 12

<<12 It was free time in the evening to do your own thing for dinner, a group of us asked at reception where there was a a good restaurant nearby and there was one nearly opposite the hotel called Bodegon de Lola. Very Spanish decorated with lots of old photo’s, ornaments and three very large shiny copper sherry fermenting vessels. Very good menu, tapas or a full meal went down well with the wine. There was 14 of us arrived at the restaurant and found John Bennett (he was the one with the chapel in his hotel bedroom) sat on his own enjoying his quiet meal, but not for long once we added many more tables and joined him, he did say he enjoyed the company. Man tips wife out of wheelchair and lives to tell the tale. After leaving the restaurant Dave Hackett was pushing Di who was sat in the 4 wheeled reliant wheelchair. Luckily they had just crossed the road when a front wheel broke off and wheelchair came to an abrupt stop, but Di did not, she went flying embarrassingly forward, complete with her plastered leg. Luckily apart from a shaken ego was ok. So says Dave “We now have a 3 wheeled ‘Reliant’ that’s not worth ‘Robin’!!!” Day 3: Time to pack then free time just to relax or shop in the old town before leaving on an uneventful trip back home, many having a snooze after having quite an eventful trip. Our many thanks to Wilma, Sue and Ted for calming the rather fraught moments and just getting on with ensuring we all had an enjoyable trip. Especially to Wilma as organiser of her first holiday trip, well done. Tuesday 10th May - Gardening Club Meeting The meeting was held in Tracy Bird’s villa/garden in Bahia Dorada................. Well it really was a question of ‘shall we go or will it be cancelled?’ The rain was just pouring down and had been for days. However, some of us braved it to Tracy’s and were SO glad we did as the rain actually stopped and even the sun came out. More members than expected arrived and we had a very enjoyable morning. Tracy kindly showed us her very pretty garden which is set on different levels with lots of very big attractive cacti, trees, shrubs and plants. After the viewing we had some very tasty refreshments as questions were asked, advice given, suggestions offered and cuttings taken. Tip of the month: to stop birds from pecking holes in your tomatoes, hang red Christmas balls onto your plants as these will frighten the birds away and will look pretty too. Submitted by Sandy Avis BOWLING OUR WAY! We meet Monday mornings at Benavista Bowls Club. Spain’s Success Against Tax Evasion By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com As part of its fight against tax evasion, the Spanish government has implemented new measures to find those who are not declaring all their income and assets as required under Spanish tax law. The internet and technological developments also make it easier for the Spanish tax office (‘Hacienda’) to get information about taxpayers. It receives data from about 800 different sources, ranging from tax returns to mandatory data provided by employers, banks and utilities providers. The tax office analyses and cross-references this data to detect and prevent tax fraud. We produce a trail of data in our daily lives that can be used by the tax office for this purpose. Electricity companies are obliged to provide information to the Hacienda regarding the electricity consumption of every property in Spain. This includes the name on the invoice; bank account holder payments are made from; property address and electricity usage. They use this data to determine if a property declared as empty is in fact in use; or if it is being declared as a primary residence when it is a secondary one; or if people are living in Spain permanently but have not registered as such and have not paid tax in Spain. Between June 2012 and 2015 it is estimated that the Spanish tax office has collected more than €40bn in its fight against tax fraud - the highest results in its history Since 2012, it has been able to track your overseas assets with the Modelo 720, which Spanish residents with overseas assets exceeding €50,000 are obliged to fill in each year. With this informative return, it has already detected more than €12bn in assets abroad. Modelo 720 will continue to play a major role in the search for offshore wealth, but the tax authorities also have the new automatic exchange of information regime. Under the Common Reporting Standard, your local tax authority now receives information about your worldwide assets every year, without asking for it, regardless of how compliant or not you are. In a reform of the General Tax Law anyone convicted of tax offences has their identity published in the Spanish Official Gazette. The authorities have also created a new aggravated offence for more than €600,000 tax fraud. The prison term for this offence was increased to six years and statute of limitation lengthened to 10 years. The tax office also renewed the 2015 Tax Control Plan to improve results in the fight against tax fraud. In 2015, it collected €15,600mn – 27% more than expected – and similar results are expected in 2016. With all the tools, locally and internationally, the government has to hand, it is only a matter of time before tax evasion and hidden assets are uncovered. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with all the Spanish tax regulations if you are resident here. Any tax planning you use needs to be fully legitimate. Spain is still a tax efficient country for retired British expatriates, if you take expert advice. Using compliant tax planning structures can save you tax and provide peace of mind. Should you have suggestions for any event or activity at your clubhouse, or for a trip whether for a day or longer period, please contact a member of the committee. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT International Club of Estepona - Golf Society Our club golf society has a rich history having been formed in the last century. Dan Cook was Captain and a founder member way back in the late 90s and stirred the club team, with the help of Vice Captain Peter Brown, into the annual competition with the CAP organisation. In 2003 Les Jinks took over as captain and golf remained a very popular activity within the club. In 2012 Les handed the privilege to me. Thanks Les, not sure how that happened! We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly competition is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ basis and we play individual stableford, using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.30 and 09.00am, dependent upon the time of year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted and is open to all. We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, held in April, and The Autumn Cup in October. These have become great social events with a very popular presentation luncheon after each. A few years ago we introduced The Ice Club D&D Order Of Merit competition. The trophy is awarded to the player recording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘Roll- Ups’ during the 12 months between each Spring Cup. In addition we also arrange ‘Away Days’, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within the local area and, once a year, a two or three night trip away to clubs further afield. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually given preferential rates. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities. If you would like to get involved, phone or enrol on our e- mailing list. Contact and Golf Organiser: Alan Davis Tel: 952 897 670 Mob: 699 712 804 e- mail: alanandsue_hq@yahoo.co.uk 27

Matters June 2016 Windows 10 Weakness:Stop Win 10 sharing your Wi-Fi password. Windows 10 contains a new feature called Wi-Fi sense, designed to let friends and colleagues connect quickly to each other’s wireless network without having to enter a password. Who are your friends? Anyone in your contacts list! Also your encrypted Wi-Fi key is stored on Microsoft’s servers, leaving it vulnerable to hackers. We advise turning off this feature. Start | Settings | Network and Internet | Wi-Fi Scroll down and click Manage Wi-Fi settings. Under Wi-Fi sense make sure both options are turned off. Help with writing words in Foreign Languages Many foreign languages use “diacritical marks” above letters e.g. ñ in Spanish. We have previously explained how these can be generated on a windows keyboard by using the Alt key and the numeric keypad. An alternative is to use the Character Map. In Win 10, Start | All Apps | Windows Accessories | Character Map. In the box “Characters to copy” start to type the word, when you get to character you require drag it to the box, click Copy and then paste the completed word into your document. Free up space on Android phones Unless your phone has a micro SD card you will find your phone running out of storage space very quickly. The photos option in AVG free cleaner app finds unwanted photos so you can delete them in an instant. Tap New Photos option at the bottom and all your photos will be analysed. They will be grouped into Photos for Review, Bad Photos and Similar Photos. Free Kindle Titles www.kindlefree.co.uk contains lists of free kindle books available for download. Another source of free books is Project Gutenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/ Category:Bookshelf . Choose a category and scroll to the bottom of the screen where you will see a list of titles and options to download in different formats. Choose “Kindle(with images)” Before attempting to download, you will find it useful to have set up an online storage account (either Dropbox, Google Drive or One Drive). Books from Project Gutenberg can only be downloaded into one of these Cloud Storage venues. You will find it much easier if you have a Dropbox account set up as the titles will automatically appear in the Dropbox on all your devices. If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND FROM COMPUTER GROUP MEMBERS, NEXT GROUP PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY 17th JUNE AT 11AM, ALL ARE WELCOME, SEE YOU THERE. Last Months Brain Teaser: Why not have another go, answer below. Two trains are on the same track 100 km apart heading towards one another, each at a speed of 50 km/h. A fly, starting out at the front of one train, flies towards the other at a speed of 75 km/h. Upon reaching the other train, the fly turns around and continues towards the first train. How many kilometres does the fly travel before getting squashed in the collision of the two trains? BrainTeasers submitted by Bryan Greetham Answer:

Submitted by Terry Clover

SUDOKU

There are two ways of calculating the answer to this problem. You can, of course, calculate the distance the fly covers on each of his trips between the two trains and then add up the sum. But the simplest answer is to approach it from a different direction and think not about the fly, but the trains. They will meet in exactly an hour after they start, so the fly will be flying for an hour, which means that he will fly 75 km. Place a Number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from one to nine.

JUST FOR A SMILE "A husband and wife go to counselor after 20 years of marriage. The counselor asks them what the problem is and the wife goes into a tirade listing every problem they have ever had in the 20 years they've been married. She goes on and on and on. Finally, the counselor gets up, walks around the desk, embraces the wife and kisses her passionately. The woman shuts up and sits quietly in a daze. The counselor turns to the husband and says, "This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?" The husband thinks for a moment and replies. "Well I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I golf."
