Editorial: March is a busy month, starting with the AGM on 2nd., Birthday parties, St Patrick’s Night Celebrations and Trips. You know Spring is on the way when we change the clocks on 25th / 26th March. Unfortunately we lose an hour’s sleep. DON’T FORGET to put you clocks FORWARD one hour! The Quiz nights will now return to the FIRST FRIDAY of the month. Please note that from the 1st April we will be increasing our Advertising Rates for the first time since 2011. New prices are shown on page 38 of this edition. This small increase will go towards the cost of producing a FULL COLOUR magazine from the April edition. I am very excited about this, as I think it will be a big enhancement to the whole magazine and especially where we are including photographs which you have sent. I hope you will support me in this and continue to submit your articles and pictures. Sheila Fox Editor Sheila Fox Email:safoxuk@gmail.com Phone 951 890 251 Mobile 671 232 906 Web: www.siberme.com

President’s Letter: We have had to say our final farewell to Robin Holloway, our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time. This month of course we have our AGM. There were 2 places vacant on the Committee but nobody has come forward to fill them. Luckily Terry Smith has been persuaded to stay on as his experience is invaluable. We have not received any proposals so hopefully the AGM will not be long. Ron Pegrum has stood down as auditor so we are desperate for someone to fill his shoes. If you have any bookkeeping knowledge please think hard about whether you can fill this role. Entry to the Club on the day will be by the top door only and don't forget your membership cards. Lunch after the AGM will be fish or pie and chips. Make sure you buy your ticket by Thursday 23rd February. We will all be affected by Brexit, so we have decided to hold a forum on Friday 31st March at 2 p.m, It will be chaired by Sally Holloway and will give us an opportunity to share our concerns and what, if anything, can we do to make ourselves heard. Somebody special has a very special birthday this month! Please help her to celebrate it at the Club on Saturday 11th. There is going to be a murder at the Club on 18th and 19th. Please come along and help solve the crime. A meal is included in the price. Joan is running the very popular Ronda train trip this month, a lovely day out with fantastic scenery, lovely lunch in Ronda and then home by coach. Sue

Congratulations to Noreen and Dan Cook who will be celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on the 2nd March 2017. Please join us in wishing them well.

PAST EVENTS January 21st Welcome Back Party

Imagine the dimly lit clubhouse and the frisson that ran up and down our spines when the words rang out “Elvis is in the building!”, and we glimpsed the tight pale blue satin trousers as the snake-like hips started to gyrate to the strains of Heartbreak Hotel! We were replete with our steak pie or salmon en croute, served with vegetables and mash, and followed by a selection of luscious desserts, washed down with a glass or three, and ready to party. This was the first Club event after the Christmas and New Year break, when many of us had been braving the bitter cold of a northern winter, so it was great to be back in the warm and among friends. Elvis – or Stelvis, as he is known round here – got us all out of our seats and on the floor as he went through the whole repertoire, until the nostalgic bubble was burst by the words “Elvis has left the building” – a great beginning to a new year at ICE. PAST EVENTS January 27th 2017 - TRIP TO MALAGA - EL MUSEO DE AUTOMOVILES

Picture the grizzly scene - Friday begins with a shower or two of rain (NOT snow on this occasion) accompanied by wind and a chill in the air. Now, read on -The coach arrives on time to collect all those participating in the trip and when it does, the welcoming dry and wind-free interior is a true comfort zone. The trip is comfortable and not long so we arrive in Malaga relaxed to let those alight for the purpose of invading retail outlets to take advantage of the January sales. At this point, I can comment no further as to the deals those souls will conclude. No, the rest of us are taken by the coach to the entrance of the car museum. The delights of the collection of cars and fashions in this museum beggar description. Those of us who attend are lady and gentleman members with a few guests. We are met by the polite and smart staff at the Reception and then leave to browse the quite amazing exhibits in the several rooms of the museum. This is an Aladdin's Cave of beautiful motor cars from the earliest horseless carriages to more modern ones. Each vehicle has a legend (which is easily read in both Spanish and English) as do the items of fashion. Frocks, jackets, coats and hats are particularly collected and shown with each car. These latter items are by the leading fashion houses of the times. The cars are from various European and American manufacturers. Here I must say that a single visit to the museum is insufficient to enjoy the depth of history the collection reveals. There are items of interest to everyone and should not be missed by any inquisitive mind. The owner of the collection is Juao Manuel Magalhaes of Oporto, Portugal who had approached the Portuguese Authorities to offer the cars for museum pieces but they showed no interest. He approached Spain and the government here put the collection out to tender. The Ayuntamiento de Malaga snapped it up......lucky for us! My wife, Moira and our friend, Janice, spoke with the Consierge of the Museum at Reception and he volunteered that Sr. Magalhaes often visits the museum, converses with the visitors and even works in the shop. The shop, by the way, is small but holds many items of souvenirs and is not expensive. We take a taxi from the museum to the Soho district where we are to catch the coach and before doing so have a delightful lunch in one of the plethora of restaurants in that area. This one is Taberna La Antigua Malaga. I strongly urge you to visit the museum - if you have interest in seeing and learning more. At present the admission is Euros 5,50 for pensionistas. Our friend, Janice, told us before she came on this trip as a guest that she had no interest in cars at that time. Having seen the exhibits of cars and fashions, she, in her own words, loved the whole day. Time to retire After over 50 years within the financial services industry I have decided it is time to retire and take life a little easier now. I moved to the Costa del Sol 21 years ago, with my wife Carole and our two daughters, when I joined Blevins Franks and over the years I have been lucky enough to meet and work with a lot of wonderful people, many of whom have become friends. I have been associated with ICE for the best part of 20 years, and have enjoyed helping some of you with your financial planning or spending time with you socially. I have also been writing articles for this magazine for the last few years and hope that you found them useful. Blevins Franks of course remains very committed to advising clients in the area. Our new Associate Partner, Javid Rustam, will be taking over from me from 1 st April and I will be spending time with him to ensure a smooth handover. Carole and I are staying in Spain – though we will be able spend more time in the UK with our daughters and little grandson so hopefully I will still meet some of you from time to time. I.C.E. Golf Society. 'Away Day' To Calanova Golf Club We do this for fun??? Well this certainly wasn't. It was freezing cold and it rained..is that possible? 10 brave, stupid, dedicated...(take your pick!) souls turned up to play and we all finished, just. Never has hot chocolate, with brandy, been so welcome. Needless to say the scoring very low, many balls were lost, and many found while looking for them, but our intrepid champion on the day was Jack. Well done to him and my many thanks to all the players for making the effort. The course was great , challenging and interesting and we will return, I'm sure , when the weather improves. Thanks to Jan Blind for organising this one. Must do better with the weather though!

Other Dates for your Diary 22nd March. Away Day to Santa Clara Golf Resort. 69€ including shared buggy. First Tee time

10.00. At the moment we have 10 confirmed players. I will need the green fee in advance as this visit is being organised through Golf Services and I have to collect the voucher.

Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The tee off time varies a little during the year and is currently 9.00am. Please by 8.30am. All levels are welcome and we often have as many as 12 or more taking part. It is all very light hearted, (in other words 'Cut Throat’) and it is worth putting your sense of humour in the bag! Our annual 'Order of Merit' trophy is awarded to the player with the best ten cards from these 'Roll-Ups' . Keep your eye on the club magazine and the website for details of all activities. PHOTO CORNER The next session of “Photography Hints and Tips” will be in April 2017 (watch this space for the exact date). Debra has many ideas for regular sessions if people are interested. She will give some basic instruction, basic workshops on composition, colour, how zoom lenses work, things that people with point ‘n shoot cameras (incl. phones and iPads) could benefit from, and more advanced stuff, like aperture, shutter, manual control tips etc., for those with bigger cameras. Please come along to her session if you have an interest in photography, where we will be discussing ideas for photography group meetings throughout the coming year, including some meetings off-site to take photos. She has suggested that the ICE club Photo Group could produce a calendar for 2018, which will contain photos taken by the group throughout the year. Not ICE sessions, but local pictures of interest. So please get out and about with your cameras and submit your photos, to be chosen to be included in this. You can send them to me, Sheila Fox safoxuk@gmail.com and mark them as “Calendar Photos Competition” Watch out for the “Photo Corner” item in the next edition of the ICE magazine. Sheila

Photography Hints & Tips Illustration #1 Imagine this grid when looking at the scene in front of you (some cameras have an option to show this on your viewfinder). The two vertical lines and two horizontal lines divide your scene into segments. This is called the "Rule of Thirds". So, place that tree on the right vertical line, your eye moves toward it. Or put that bird on the right or left vertical line, with its eyes facing the largest portion of empty space, so it can fly through. Same for children running, jumping. Use the horizontal lines as guides to place your horizon in a landscape, try not to put the horizon where it cuts the scene in half. The dark spots are a guide for placing objects for a more pleasing composition, for example if you're photographing a flower, or a building, tree, rock, anything in a scene, placing them in position over one of the four spots will give your subject interest and balance.

Illustration #2 Triangles and diagonals are great for giving your photo extra energy or a sense of movement, or power. If you see a diagonal created by a line of trees, or a road, railroad track, or similar, use it to give your photo extra interest. Same with objects that suggest a triangle; people, buildings, anything that suggests that shape when you look through your viewfinder. Don't forget colour! Next month we will look at complimentary colours! Debra Coleman

Scams We have on many occasions explained scams which have taken place. These are now so varied and numerous that we think that the best that we can do is remind you on a regular basis how you can protect yourself from these criminals: Never give your credit card Debit card PIN to anyone, not even if they profess to be from the bank. No bank will ever ask you for your PIN. Never give anyone your password for a website. In phone calls to financial institutions they often ask for two or three letters from your password but never the complete password. Never follow a link from an email to a website. Always access the website by typing in the address in the address bar. If you receive an email with an attachment from someone you don’t recognize, delete it. This avoids the downloading of unwanted viruses. Always remember, the key to a secure website is if the address begins https:// A New App for your phone: David Attenborough’s Story of Life is available for both Android and iOS. Download from your app store. This app contains over 1,000 videos filmed for the various BBC series including Planet Earth, Blue Planet and Africa. WhatsApp Messenger recently added video calling to its features. Now when you make a call on WhatsApp, you will see a screen offering Voice Call or Video Call. If you select Video Call a video picture of the caller will be transmitted to the receiver. Again we suggest that you try this out with a close friend in the first instance. If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com

MEMBERS ARTICLES Back In Time - 50 Years Ago - 18th March 1967 Super Tanker Torrey Canyon Hits Rocks Super tanker Torrey Canyon ran aground on rocks between Land's End and the Scilly Isles and leaked its cargo of oil into the sea. The 974-ft (297m) tanker, which was carrying 100,000 tons of crude oil, hit Pollard's Rock in the Seven Stones reef. The crew of the Seven Stones lightship, two miles off the reef, said they realised the tanker was in danger when she was still a mile from the disaster. The crew of the Liberian-registered Torrey Canyon were rescued by helicopters and lifeboats although the captain and three of his crew initially stayed on board. In the weeks that followed the accident, oil escaped and spread along the shores of the south coast of England and the Normandy coast of France. Worst hit were the Cornish beaches of Marazion and Prah Sands, where sludge was up to a foot deep. Up to 70 miles (113km) of beaches were seriously contaminated. More than 20,000 sea birds were contaminated by the oil as a result of the disaster. It was the biggest problem of its kind ever faced by any nation and the Government announced it would spend ÂŁ500,000 on the south-west and Scilly Isles. The vessel was bombed for two days until it finally sank on 30 March 1967 and the oil slick was eventually dispersed by favourable weather. Submitted by Terry Smith

JANUARY IN SPAIN In January in Spain We often get some rain But we also get the sun Quick! Get the washing done! And as the weather's fine We can hang it on the line But make sure the pegs are strong As the wind will come along. With Christmas pleasures past It hasn't been the last For we celebrate again When the Three Kings come to reign Bringing lots of toys For happy girls and boys Who rush into the streets To gather up the sweets

We haven't seen the snow But people "in the know" Say it's snowing even harder On the slopes at Sierra Navada But we prefer the sun And when the day is done All that we require Is to sit beside a fire And close the curtains tight To shut out the chilly night. Submitted by Anne Hardwick

JUST FOR A SMILE A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The barman looks at him and says, "Hang on! You're a duck." "I see your eyes are working," replies the duck. "And you can talk!" exclaims the barman. "I see your ears are working, too," says the duck. "Now if you don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?" "Certainly, sorry about that," Says the barman as he pulls the duck's pint. "It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub.. What are you doing round this way?" "I'm working on the building site across the road," Explains the duck. "I'm a plasterer." The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it. So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens for two weeks, then one day the circus comes to town. The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him, "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!" "Sounds marvellous," says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. "Get him to give me a call." So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says, "Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money." "I'm always looking for the next job," Says the duck. "Where is it?" "At the circus," Says the barman. "The circus?" Repeats the duck. "That's right," Replies the barman. "The circus...?" The duck asks again. "...with the big tent?" "Yeah," the barman replies. "With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?" says the duck. "Of course," the barman replies. "And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?" persists the duck. "That's right!" says the barman. The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says .. . ....... "What would they want with a plasterer??!"
