Hello This is my first edition of the ICE Magazine and I would like to say many, many thanks to Sheila for all her help. Especially in this strange time when we are not allowed to meet up! I do hope we can get back to a printed magazine in the not too distant future, so please do send me your comments, or items for inclusion. Take care Betty

President’s Letter
We have had to say our final farewell to David Minkin—our thoughts are with Irene and family at this very sad time.
Well another extension to 10th May has been ratified but children, from 27th, can now go for a walk but no details of how far and where, as parks and beaches remain closed, still just to get out would be lovely. Hope you're all managing to keep yourselves occupied and not putting on too much weight. Shopping was never a favourite pastime of mine but absolutely hate it now. I expect we've all had nightmare experiences which, when we tell friends about it, seem very funny. Who knew there was a wrong and right way to stand at conveyor belt to load shopping!! There are some good things to talk about and the weather isn't one of them. With less noise the birdsong is very noticeable and the world's air is not so polluted. Lovely to see places with a clear blue sky instead of smog. On that happy note I shall end this rambling of mine and wish you all a happy month and hope to see you all very soon. Keep well, keep safe. Sue Potter, President

MEMBERS’ ARTICLE
Last month we heard from John and Carole Murray about the first two weeks of their cruise from Buenos Aires. In my last correspondence we were heading at full speed to the Panama Canal and the port of Miami, where we were advised to change our flights to the 30th March. We duly contacted Iberia after a three hour wait on the phone to get an agent, we again changed flights, this time from Miami to Madrid, MĂĄlaga was still a problem. Will worry about that later, there are more pressing items to attend to, the White Night Party and what to have for lunch. The party went off with a very enjoyable bang. The full ship's compliment getting into the White spirit and some of a different hue!! On the 24th March at 05:45 the ship's position was Latitude 00.00.000S Longitude 81*.06.400W - the Equator. The traditional ceremony was to take place at 14:00 which involves the Pollybacks (first time crossing the Equator) initiation: swearing allegiance to King Neptune and kissing the fish then an examination by the surgeon, with body parts removed and then tossed into the pool. Being a Shellback we had already been initiated on previous occasions. A bit of light relief with much laughter, especially when the Captain gets involved. It takes the rest of the day to clean the pool. Cont...

We made good time to the canal arriving early on 25th and had an interesting passage watching the 'mules' pull the ship through the three locks. To achieve this, a Panamanian crew have to come on board to operate their systems. The Captain and any crew coming in contact with them were fully masked and body suited, a cleaning detail followed with the Panamanians disinfecting very step as they went. All was looking good until later we received an email from Iberia, informing us that our flight on 30h was cancelled, offering a change to 29th at 22.10. After another couple of calm sunny days with difficult decisions - what for lunch, what for dinner, which wine, will it be a G & T or Rum and Ginger Ale. Decisions decisions! someone has to do it! As it turned out the 29th would have suited fine, except for American Homeland Security. You know, those lovely people who normally great you at Miami airport with dead pan suspicious looks. Well in this case the arrangement was somewhat different. We were taken in very orderly timed succession to the Cabaret Lounge and presented our passports to the officers who were 2-3 metres behind a barricade of tables, no stamping of passports and no thumb prints. Best ever passage into USA. Cont...

We stayed on board for our final night in the PrimeC restaurant saying a fond farewell to Ronal (our favourite barman) Misha and Michelle . They had looked after us very well for the twenty eight days. All the staff had been faultless in every department. It had now been arranged that Azamara's head office had chartered a flight to London and then with BA to Madrid, but they could get us no further as there were no flights to Mรกlaga. Luckily we had met a couple who lived very near us in Estepona. Carole did her usual Internet search (she is quite the expert at it) and contacted a company who could supply a driver and vehicle big enough to take the four of us and five large and two small cases.
Our time to debark the ship came at 13:45. We were escorted through a back door into the terminal building to pick up our cases and board a coach to the airport. We had a police escort with full compliment of flashing lights, one in front of our four coaches and one bringing up the rear. After a speedy check in procedure we boarded the charted American Airlines 777 for a pleasant flight to Heathrow. On arriving at London the airport was deserted with not even a coffee available, or Boots or WH Smith open. At Madrid we had to phone the driver who directed us to where he was parked as he was not permitted to meet us in the normal meet and greet area. During the six and a half hour drive to Estepona, at times in torrential rain, all we saw were lorries and about four cars, until we came off the AP7 into Estepona where the Guadia Civil greeted us with much shouting and abuse to our driver for having four passengers. At one stage we thought we were for the police station. Then another vehicle arrived and gained their attention. We arrived home at 11:30pm tired but glad to be back. Epilogue It had been a great experience and adventure. The cruise and especially all on board had been magnificent under very trying and difficult times. We were of course disappointed in missing the many places we had planned to see but it had been both an adventure and at times anxious. On looking back Azamara came out with flying colours. Here's to the next one! Stay safe, keep healthy, John and Carole

Dear ICE member, Hope you are keeping healthy and safe, Since the last time we have been in touch at the end of last year, the world has become a very different place. Who would have imagined that the world has so suddenly and abruptly been forced to push the “pause” button and people in all corners of the world would be affected by the Covid-19 to this extent? Let’s hope we all get through this in the not too far future and in good health, and can return to our more or less normal lives. Until then we are all confined to our homes, communicating with each other via Zoom, Skype or any of the other remote communication alternatives its common use must have taken a leap forward of about 10 years now compared to normal circumstances. We too, consultants helping the foreign resident community here in the South of Spain, have adapted in a similar way and are continuing advising our clients and clients to be at the same level as before, just differently. Obviously with the different world we have been thrown into, our clients need our advice and help now more than ever. Questions we get are predominantly around the volatility in the stock markets, people’s residency status (now travelling back can be an issue), Brexit, taxes, etc.
More and more we are also receiving queries from people seeing an investment opportunity to enter into the investment universe following the recent downturn in the markets. We just want you to know, that should you wish to have a chat, we are here in the same way as before, just a bit different. Do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or would like to receive information. Kind regards, Lucia Melgarejo International Financial Adviser

CODEWORDS (Answers Page 24) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 24) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 12

MAGIC MICKEY’S COCKTAIL
MAGIC MICKEY’S NIGHTCAP TO REMEMBER This concoction will go a long way to soothing the partaker’s inner self. It has been derived from the sensible mixing of three delicious liquids, so fear not of its consumption Ingredients
BENEDICTINE D.O.M. SPANISH SOLERA BRANDY DOUBLE CREAM OR NATA PARA MONTAR Directions Firstly, select a cognac snifter - no need to warm it - in fact do not warm it. Keep it as cool as possible. Secondly, add to the snifter one part of Benedictine plus one part of the brandy. Stir well these two soothers in the snifter Thirdly, over the back of a teaspoon - the tip of which should just touch the soothing liquid - slowly pour the cream to a level the same depth as the soothers. Cease pouring Now, sitting comfortably gazing either into oblivion or the stars overhead, sip this fellow until there is no more. You just might decide that you should go for a deeper peace so, yes, load up another before the stars disappear. TRANQUILITY REIGNS 14

UK Budget 2020: How will the new tax year affect expatriates? by Javid Rustam, Associate Partner, Blevins Franks The UK 2020 budget announced in March may have been low priority for expatriates in Spain then faced with the coronavirus situation. Now that the UK’s new tax year started on 6th April 2020, however, you may be interested in this summary of what has changed. Personal taxes There were no changes to the personal tax allowances or thresholds. Savings and investments The capital gains tax exemption continues tracking inflation, increasing from £12,000 to £12,300 (£6,150 for most trusts) from April. Entrepreneurs’ relief had its lifetime relief limit slashed from £10 million to £1 million. The dividend allowance remains frozen at £2,000. While the band of UK savings income that can be earned tax-free stays at £5,000 and the annual ISA subscription limit at £20,000, the allowance for a Junior ISA or child trust fund doubles to £9,000. Note that investments like ISAs lose their tax-efficient benefits once you are non-UK resident and any interest earned may become taxable in Spain. Take time to explore alternative tax-efficient arrangements for Spain. Pensions Pensions relief – The personal tax-free pensions allowance remains at £40,000. Previously, those earning over £110,000 were subject to a “tapered” allowance, but this threshold rose to £200,000 on 6 April. Only those earning an “adjusted income” of at least £240,000 are set to lose tax relief in the 2020/21 tax year. The minimum level to which the annual allowance can shrink will reduce from £10,000 to £4,000 but only affecting those with taxable income over £300,000. Lifetime allowance – This continues to increase with inflation, adding an extra £18,100 to the maximum amount you can hold in UK pensions tax-free. From April combined pension benefits up to £1,073,100 avoid 25% or 55% LTA tax penalties. State Pension – Those on the older State Pension will see a 3.9% rise to £134.25 per week. QROPS – There were no changes to transfers to EU/EEA-based Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS), which remain tax-free for EU residents. The UK’s 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ remains for non-EU/EEA transfers; this may be extended once the Brexit transition period ends, so explore your options under current rules. UK property stamp duty The Budget confirmed a 2% surcharge for non-UK residents purchasing properties in England and Northern Ireland from 1 April 2021. This makes a potential top rate of 17% (usual stamp duty charge up to 12%, plus 3% surcharge for second homes, plus 2% non-resident stamp duty). Inheritance tax The IHT threshold remains frozen at £325,000 per person. The residential nil rate band increases as planned from £150,000 to £175,000 per person. This provides extra tax relief when passing on a main UK home to direct descendants but starts to taper once joint assets exceed £2 million. While the upcoming tax year brings relatively few changes, these are unusually challenging times, with much uncertainty still ahead and the Brexit clock ticking down. To make the most of tax-efficient opportunities take personalised advice from a cross-border specialist. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice.
