President’s Letter

Well, the Club is up and running albeit with lower numbers and some activities still not being held, but I do hope that all of you that have attended have felt safe at the Club. If you have any issues please contact me or one of the Committee. Please take time to read the Safety Notices: we have a new safeguard in place, if you have arrived from another country please refrain from coming to the Club for 14 days, this does not apply to outside events. The wearing of masks has now become second nature but there are times we forget, please do not be offended when somebody reminds you to wear your mask. The big event this month is of course our 32nd birthday lunch, hope you have by now bought your ticket, it'll be different this year that's for sure. Looking forward, December's big event is, of course, Christmas lunch, tickets are on sale soon. The Club will be open this year for Christmas day lunchtime, thank you Fran and Ian, so there is no need for anybody to be alone. Don't forget to bring your plate of food. Please remember we need a new President, Vice President, Catering Manager and Advertising Manager at the next AGM. Keep warm, keep healthy and keep safe Sue Potter, President

Good fortune for all concerned “Gobsmacked, amazed, highly delighted and slightly embarrassed” were my immediate reactions on the morning of Thursday, 1st October, when Lady Luck pulled out all the stops at the first ICE raffle draw since the club's reopening. My husband Keith and I almost didn’t make it to the meeting that morning but were so pleased that we did when, not only was I invited to draw the first winning ticket, but I drew out my very own number and was fortunate enough to win the First Prize of €80. What were the chances of that? So it was indeed a little embarrassing but the reward was in enjoying beating the odds of winning in that way, rather than the money itself. It's nice to share in good fortune and whilst some of you may have been disappointed that the cliched “drinks all round” wasn't called out at the bar afterwards, you - and perhaps your livers - will be pleased to know that your money was indeed shared when it was handed to the St George charity, with the specific request that it be used for the annual purchase of Christmas/Three Kings gifts for underprivileged children in the area. Alright, I didn't get a weekend at The Ritz or a Rolex watch and you didn't get your glass of 'bubbles' at the bar, but we can share a smile during the festive season, imagining the pleasure our fun raffle monies will give to some less fortunate kids in the area. The Rolex can wait until after next month's draw! Submitted by Carola Brown 7

PAST EVENTS WELCOME BACK SUPPER This year the Welcome Back Supper at ICE - Saturday 17th October - was very different from our usual events. It was the first in-house social event since we returned from lockdown. Although we only had 24 attendees and our tables were "socially distanced", we enjoyed an excellent three course roast dinner, with all the trimmings, cooked to perfection by Brenda and her helpers. Conversation was lively around the room as are meals were served at the tables.

Ian Horwood running the bar for the entire evening and Stephanie stepped up to the mark, as usual, and sold raffle tickets to all, with the prize hamper being won by Freddie Thomas. Without live music and dancing, the evening ended a bit earlier than normal but appeared to be enjoyed by everyone. Thank you Brenda, Bob, Renee, Danny and Ian for all your hard work. Food superb, great bar service. Submitted by Sheila Fox WALKING TREASURE HUNT Well another successful treasure hunt (some may not agree), 24 couples, 48 people invaded part of Estepona old town. Many commented on the lovely walk, perhaps interrupted by a hunt for clues, in a part of Estepona some had never seen before. I would recommend that more time should be spent discovering these picturesque streets. Some clues many got, other clues may have been a bit obscure like the very last one before the finish, ‘hope this did not influence your answers”. Did no one see ‘Guess’ on the very last window of your walk? Probably desperate for that drink! So out of a possible 48 points the winners: 1st Sue Potter and Caroline 35, 2nd Doug and Joanna Mitchell 33, 3rd Bob Taylor and Danny Hackston 31. Congratulations to all who took part. Forget all the trauma how about having another go next October, hope to see you then. Submitted by Terry and Pat Smith 9

PAST EVENTS ICE GOLF AUTUMN CUP The 2020 Autumn cup was finally played on Thursday the 8th of October at Valle Romano Golf. The original venue booked for the event and the following lunch was Estepona Golf, however, some of our golfers played the course several days before the planned event and found it to be in a very bad state. This was partly due to extensive damage by wild boar but also a lack of good maintenance in general. It was decided that it was unplayable for a golf competition. Valle Romano offered the best alternative deal and the best course locally, so the final choice was easy. It was a very early start at 08-20 with 22 golfers teeing off from 3 different tees. The weather was perfect with warm sunshine and virtually no wind. No one could blame the weather for a bad result. All was fine with the golf until one of our golfers came along to inform us that he and his partner had managed to turn their buggy over on its side and his partner had retired with extensive cuts and bruises and gone home to get patched up. Fortunately the injuries were not too serious, considering how much worse the accident could have been. He was able to join us for lunch and after a few glasses of wine he felt no pain at all. Apart from that unfortunate incident we all agreed that it had been a good challenge on a demanding course. Using the new international handicap system for the first time for one of our cup competitions the results were as follows: Overall winner: Natalie Scanlon 1st Male: Joe Scanlon, !st Female: Jackie McMurtry 2nd Male: Finlay Buchanon, 2nd Female: Mariska Turkenburg. For the first time, the lunch was taken at the Venta Valle Romano. We were served a good 'Menu del Dia' 3 course lunch of really fresh tasting food by friendly waitresses. The meal completed a very successful day and I am sure we will use the restaurant again. Submitted by Peter Henry I told my carpenter I didn't want carpeted steps and he gave me a blank stair. What did the surgeon say to the patient who insisted on closing up his own incision? Suture self. Wealthy fat people. A clear case of money going to waist. 10

PUZZLES

Like puzzles— There’s a new one every day on the ICE website! CODEWORDS (Answers Page 33) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 33 ) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 11

REFLECTIONS OF ‘ICE’ Artists The ICE informal art group meets every Friday and I have enjoyed being part of it for many years – Ed. The painting group was started by a very distinguished artist – John Wright – who had exhibitions of his work in many famous galleries in America, UK, and here in Spain. John was not a trained teacher but had a unique way of giving encouragement by wandering round the group, offering a comment here, a nudge there, some specific advice, redirection and ambiguous exclamation. Sadly John died in 2013, but his legacy remains. When members of the group take a few minutes to sample one of Steve’s special Steve Carter

Advice when passing on bad news! In these worrying times as we continue to struggle through the Covid-19 problem, club members might like to share this advice about passing on bad news to others. A middle aged couple were working out how to deal with a problem they faced when the wife was required to be away from home for a full working week. All the shopping had been done, meals stored away in the freezer and the house had been thoroughly cleaned, spare toilet rolls left near the toilets, and so on. The wife left home on the Monday morning knowing that what needed to be done, had been done, and husband would be able to manage ‘all by himself’! The first evening she phones to check all is well, and is relieved to be told there had been no problems at home. The second evening, she phones and asks the same questions and receives much the same answers, except that the husband adds, ‘Oh, by the way, the cat’s dead.’ ‘What,’ she replies in shock, ‘what happened?’ ‘Well, she climbed up the tree and got onto the roof. Then found she couldn’t get down again and scrambled around until she fell. And that was that.’ ‘Oh how awful. Oh dear, our poor little baby,’ she cries pitifully over the phone, and after a few moments adds, ‘Well, you could have broken such horrible news to me more compassionately, not just blurt it out like that.’ ‘What do you mean? How else should I tell you?’ ‘Well,’ says the wife, ‘you could have said, that puss had an accident and that she’d climbed up the tree and, well, you know, gently led me to the bad news that she’d fallen off the roof and … well, passed away from her injuries.’ ‘Oh, sorry about that. Next time I’ll know.’ The following evening, she phones again and is told that all is well at home. No problems.’ ‘Well, thank goodness for that. By the way, have you heard from Mum? How is she?’ ‘Ah well’, he hesitates. ‘Let’s put it this way, at the moment, she’s sort of climbed a tree and is on the roof …’ Submitted by Geoff Morgan 15

HOW DID 102 ENGLISH CITIZENS EVOLVE INTO 30 MILLION WORLDWIDE? Exactly 400 years ago this year, 102 pilgrims arrived in the New World to start a new life. The Pilgrim Fathers, as they became known, were a Puritan religious group who could no longer tolerate the repression of their religious freedom in England and sought refuge, first in Amsterdam, and then in Leiden in the Netherlands, a town well known for its religious tolerance and freethinking. In Leiden, over a period of some 10 years, the group began to feel that they were losing their English language and heritage and they decided to plan their trip to the New World. They sailed for Plymouth, England, on the 22nd July 1620 on the ship Speedwell, a boat which had taken part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, They took on more pilgrims and supplies in London on the way to Plymouth. However, the ship was deemed unseaworthy due to many leaks and it was decided that the pilgrims should all board the now famous ship Mayflower. On the 16th of September 1620, they set out for the New World. The trip took some 66 days and met with headwinds and tumultuous seas. At one point a main beam snapped and was held up by a screw jack which had been taken along to help with house building. One crew member and one passenger died before they reached land, and a child was born at sea. On the 9th Nov 1620, they landed on the shores of Cape Cod, in present-day Massachusetts. A scouting party was sent out and they eventually decided to establish a settlement in what is now Plymouth harbour. Discontent had grown from the Non-Puritan passengers and before leaving the Mayflower the Puritans agreed to sign a document, the so-called “Mayflower Compact which established the foundation of the new Colonies government. These documents were eventually to form the first basis of democracy in America. 16

During the next several months, the settlers lived mostly on the Mayflower and ferried back and forth from shore to build their new storage and living quarters. More than half of the English settlers died during that first winter, as a result of poor nutrition and housing that proved inadequate in the harsh weather. The native inhabitants of the region around Plymouth County were the various tribes of the Wampanoag people who had lived there for some 10,000 years before the Europeans arrived. Native American chiefs including Massasoit, chief of the Pokanoket, taught the pilgrims how to plant corn, which became an important crop, as well as where to fish and hunt beaver.

The Pilgrims famously shared a harvest feast with the Pokanokets’. The meal is now considered the basis of the first Thanksgiving holiday. The first Thanksgiving likely did not include turkey or mashed potatoes as potatoes were just making their way from South America to Europe but the Wampanoag brought deer and there would have been lots of local seafood plus the fruits of the first Pilgrim harvest including pumpkin. Repressive policies toward religious nonconformists in England had driven some 1,000 Puritan refuges many men and women to follow the Pilgrims’ path to the New World. Three more ships travelled to Plymouth after the Mayflower, including the Fortune (1621), the Anne and the Little James (both 1623).

From the original 102 Pilgrim Fathers, over a period of 400 years, a population of some 10 Million evolved in the USA and some 30 million worldwide. Many Americans are proud to be able to trace there heritage back to the Pilgrim Fathers and amongst these are Humphrey Bogart and two US presidents James Garfield and John Adams. A very informative web page which goes into details of the whole journey can be found at https://www.mayflower400uk.org/education/the-mayflower-story/ Submitted by Ron Sykes 17

FROM THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY

The following are various snippets from history which readers may find interesting, strange, humorous or just plain bizarre. * At the battle of Koniggratz in 1866, King Wilhelm I of Prussia interfered so often in the conduct of the battle that Count Otto von Bismarck, who was present as an observer, is said to have given the royal steed a swift kick in the rump. This caused the horse to panic and run from the field, thereby removing the King from the scene long enough for army commander to win the battle. * In the 100 years between 1601 and 1700 there were only seven years in which there were no major military operations anywhere in Europe. In the early part of World War I, the German Army smuggled weapons to its ally Turkey; the guns were shipped across neutral Rumania inside beer barrels. This practice continued until one day when a Rumanian railroad employee decided to wet his whistle - unsuccessfully. * When Charles XII of Sweden sent his troops in to storm a fortified Russian village in 1709, the resulting action became so intense that the Russian defenders poured their boiling breakfast porridge down upon the Swedes. * Among British Army reservists reactivated for the Falklands War in 1982 was a World War II mobile field bakery unit nicknamed " Lizzie," recalled from retirement in the Museum of Army Transport. * Field Marshal Montgomery wore "elevator" boots and shoes - footwear with special inserts – so that he could appear taller than he actually was. 26

* Thomas Lopez de Upoa, paymaster of the Spanish "Army of Flanders" from 1642 to 1651, was a very able embezzler. He was so good at his craft that it required 50 years of meticulous investigation and auditing before the Spanish government was able to determine that his estate owed the Spanish treasury 309,325 florins - a sum sufficient to have paid an army of 30,000 men for one day. * Defeating France during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) cost the British taxpayers some 700 million pounds sterling, which was the equivalent of roughly 91 years of spending at the pre-war peacetime budget rate. * During World War II, on the 703.4 square miles of the Marianas Islands and Guam in the Pacific, the US constructed 233 outdoor movie theatres, 65 staged theatres, 95 softball and 35 baseball fields, 225 volleyball and 30 basketball courts, and 35 boxing rings complete with spectator seating. This works out to a total of 1.02 leisure time facilities per square mile. * The warship USS Monitor in the American Civil War had a money-back guarantee if unable to steam at 8 knots for 12 miles. * The world's record for immunity from foreign occupation is probably held by Venice. It first felt the tread of foreign boots when Napoleon entered it peacefully in 1797, some 1350 years after its foundation. It is probably the only major Old World city never to have been sacked. * During World War I, the British discovered that their standard barbed wire cutters, which worked quite nicely on their own wire, was unsuited for cutting the higher quality German variety. * When adjusted for inflation, the cost per ton of a tank has not increased significantly since 1918. * In the 150 years from 479 B.C. through 338 B.C. Athens, during its socalled "Golden Age," was at war an average of two out of every three years; no period of peace lasted as long as ten years, and one war lasted nearly 30 years. PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING A TIE CARD To be clear, UK Nationals that already have the Resident Card or Certificate are not obliged to apply for a TIE as, together with a passport, they are sufficient proof of residency and identity. Bear in mind, though, once your Residents’ card expires, it will have to be replaced with a TIE. On the other hand, you can make an application before the expiry date if you wish and this is what I decided to do. However, The British Embassy are requesting that unless your green Residencia has the wrong name or address that you do not exchange to TIE until next year so that we do not take appointments away from 1st time applicants. I found, like others, that the talk given by the Spanish lady about obtaining the TIE Card, somewhat confusing, so I thought it might help if I explained the procedure taken to obtain mine. In the first place, I arranged for Manilva Solicitors to handle my application, as the forms to be completed are, understandably, in Spanish. The firm charge €150 per person but there are other people who will do it for less. You can, of course, do it all yourself. 1. Go on-line to the National Police in Estepona to request an appointment. The website used was www.sede.policia.gib.com 2. You are only given a choice of 3 dates and times, per application. Once selected, you will be sent an email confirming the appointment and be given a reference number (No. Justificante de Cita), and you have to attend in person. 3. In the meantime, you need to download the following forms from the same website:4. EX23 (application form) to be completed plus 1 copy. MODELO 790 codigo 12 (stamp duty payment form), plus 1 copy. Once completed, and printed, I had to take this form to any bank and hand it over with €12 in cash. The cashier then stamps the form to show it’s been paid. These forms must be completed on-line and then printed to take to your appointment.( Take copies for yourself) You must also take the following to the appointment with you. 1. Resident certificate or card plus a copy. 31

2. Passport plus copy. ( I was advised to copy every single page as some of the staff, although not all, insist on it. 3. Current passport photo. 4. I also took my original NIE and copy, just in case it was asked for. 5. Original & copy of Padron no more than 2 months old. Having arrived at the police station, I had to give my name to the police officer, who then ticked me off the list. Because of Covid restrictions, everyone has to wait outside until told to go into the appropriate office. I’d chosen an early time so didn’t wait much more than ten minutes. Once seated in front of the allocated desk, the young man dealing with my application, (he spoke perfect English) checked off all the paperwork and, once satisfied that everything was in order, gave me back all the original papers. Next, my fingerprints were taken. I had, at one point, to wet my finger and rub it across my forehead, as there seemed to be some difficulty in getting a perfect print. My fingerprints are incorporated in the card so they’ve got me on record now!!

Once this was all done, I was told to wait a month and then request, on line, another appointment. Once again, there was a choice of only three dates and times. Having selected one, I received a further email confirming the date and time. On arrival, my passport and fingerprints were checked again. Once satisfied that all was in order, I was given my card which shows all my details as well as my photo. As my green resident’s card was for 5 years, my TIE is only valid until 2025. It will then have to be renewed but then will be valid for 10 years. It will not be necessary to repeat the first application but will be just the same as applying for a new passport. As you will see from the above, it’s not quite as simple to make this application as we were given to understand, so I’m glad I got professional help. I was given an appointment within a week of the initial request, which was made last July. However, I believe it is now taking longer as more applications are being received so suggest you allow plenty of time before your current residency card expires.

Can a UK-based adviser continue to support you from 2021? By David Bowern, Partner, Blevins Franks

Under today’s rules UK-based financial businesses can passport out of the UK into Europe, but this will no longer apply next year. Passporting enables cross-border transactions between EU member states through shared financial regulation. Unless a mutual deal is agreed on financial services, the EU will not permit ongoing passporting arrangements for UK financial businesses and advisers from January 2021. Some UK financial firms have put provisions in place to continue working in an EU/ EEA country post-Brexit, but others have not. We have already seen letters from major UK banks to EU-based clients, advising they will be withdrawing services. Make sure you understand your provider’s legal position for Spain clients. If you retain UK investments, a UK-based adviser may be able to continue supporting you there. But if you hold savings and investments with an EU-based institution, from 2021 they may not accept instructions from UK advisers. Check also if there will be practical challenges, such as having to travel to UK for meetings and paperwork. Also consider if a UK-based adviser based is best placed to help you take advantage of opportunities available in Spain. Do they have in-depth knowledge of the local residence, tax, and succession regimes? If you are holding on to UK savings and investments, beware they can lose their tax benefits once you are living in Spain. It’s never been more important to ensure your financial affairs are compliant and suitable for Spain. Secure peace of mind by talking to an experienced, locally-based adviser as soon as possible. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com 35
