Good fortune for all concerned

“Gobsmacked, amazed, highly delighted and slightly embarrassed” were my immediate reactions on the morning of Thursday, 1st October, when Lady Luck pulled out all the stops at the first ICE raffle draw since the club's reopening.

My husband Keith and I almost didn’t make it to the meeting that morning but were so pleased that we did when, not only was I invited to draw the first winning ticket, but I drew out my very own number and was fortunate enough to win the First Prize of €80. What were the chances of that?

So it was indeed a little embarrassing but the reward was in enjoying beating the odds of winning in that way, rather than the money itself. It's nice to share in good fortune and whilst some of you may have been disappointed that the cliched “drinks all round” wasn't called out at the bar afterwards, you -and perhaps your livers -will be pleased to know that your money was indeed shared when it was handed to the St George charity, with the specific request that it be used for the annual purchase of Christmas/Three Kings gifts for underprivileged children in the area.

Alright, I didn't get a weekend at The Ritz or a Rolex watch and you didn't get your glass of 'bubbles' at the bar, but we can share a smile during the festive season, imagining the pleasure our fun raffle monies will give to some less fortunate kids in the area. The Rolex can wait until after next month's draw! Submitted by Carola Brown 7
