President’s Letter There are still some Covid restrictions, but this week Andalucia has moved to level 1. We still need to wear masks inside and can now have 8 people at a table inside and 10 outside. Dancing is allowed only outside and wearing masks. At the last Committee Meeting, it was agreed that for this year only, members who had not been able to visit the Club to renew their membership could include the remainder of this year by adding an extra 10€ on next year´s membership fee of 35€. It was also agreed to produce the magazine bi-monthly as an experiment to save costs. It is possible that an extra monthly newsletter might be produced to keep us up to date on forthcoming events. This edition is combining October/ November. The December/January edition will be as normal and a further edition will be produced for February/March. The matter will be discussed at the AGM in March. We now have a "Suggestion Box" which is situated on the unit between the two toilets. Please let us have your suggestions, anonymously, if necessary, but please be respectful. The Spanish supper scheduled in September has moved to 23rd October and is now A Lancashire Dinner. The "Ladies the Larf" will still be entertaining us during the evening. Book your tickets now. Hoping to see as many of you as possible at some of the upcoming events.

PUZZLES

Like puzzles— There’s a new one every day on the ICE website! CODEWORDS (Answers Page 30) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 30) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box 8

PAST EVENTS FILM NIGHT The first film night of the new season, while enjoyable, was sadly poorly supported - there was a total audience of only six people, a bit of a shame! The film was “Oblivion“ starring Tom Cruise as a space technician based on a deserted planet Earth which had been ravaged by robot aliens, who destroyed the moon and caused disastrous consequences for the whole human population, who have all evacuated to planet Titan. There were beautiful images of the ruined Earth, apparently filmed mostly in Iceland. Tom himself stars in an ill-fated, last ever, Earth - based love triangle, but, sadly, there was not much development of relationships or characters. Tom mostly wears his “wooden action man hero“ face whooshing around in an elaborate helicopter/plane device and firing lots of whizz bang gadgets everywhere. The special effects are good, better than the actual storyline. Morgan Freeman’s role was disappointing and rather wasted. Not a waste of an evening though - for its genre it was quite entertaining if very predictable. For those who love special effects and clever gadgetry- spot on! And the ice creams were good in the intermission - thank you Sheila. Let’s hope more members come to the next film night! Submitted by Rachel Lucas

QUIZ NIGHT - SEPTEMBER Fran's quiz nights are always a bit different. That's because she gives us the answers!. Well, not quite as easy as that. The answers are in there somewhere you just have to sort them out. Multi-choice answers to the questions means you have to choose an answer from 4 given answers. I asked Google this question "What is the most popular answer on a multi-choice quiz?" The idea that C is the best answer to choose when guess-answering a question on a multiple choice test, rests on the premise that ACT/SAT exams answer choices are not truly randomized. In other words, the implication is that answer choice C is correct more often than any other answer choice. Well, I tested this theory on Fran's quiz this month and it most definitely wasn't true. If you don't know the correct answer you have to guess and take your chances there. 10

For this quiz, Fran produced a PowerPoint Presentation to avoid repeating the questions (with 4 possible answers) and hopefully allowing us a little more time to concentrate (and guess correctly) in many cases an educated guess was good. The presentation was shown on the big TV and we had 3 teams of 5 or 6 arranged so that we could all see the questions and the possible answers clearly. With only 3 teams each team was able to take home a prize. Always a fun evening. Thank you Fran (and Ian for your input too). Thanks also to Doug Mitchell for running the bar for us. Hope to see a few more attendees next month, Friday 1st October, when the quizmaster will be Doug Proctor. Submitted by Sheila Fox

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT Nigel Nevshehir has kindly forwarded an article, (sadly too long to be included in the magazine) published in March this year, which made some very interesting points about the 90 day rule imposed on Non-Residents by Spain and the EU on UK Citizens. The article states that the fallout from Brexit is still raining down on millions of people, not least Britons who own second homes in Spain. Post-Brexit, while Britons do still have the right to stay in the Spain without a visa for 90 days, in a rolling 180, this presents a problem for people who usually stay for 3-6 months in total over the year. The article then goes on to introduce Andrew Hesselden who shares his time between Mallorca and London and has launched a number of campaigns to challenge and see that this is changed, at least in Spain. Andrew states “I travel around Europe regularly for business and leisure but now, every time I enter and exit an EU country, British passports are stamped to keep track of how many days we spend in entire 26-country Schengen zone. These all reduce the days we can spend at our homes here in Mallorca. This has got to be resolved and sooner rather than later.” To read the full article - google Fighting to resolve the 3-6 month trap for Britons in Spain by Humphrey Carter

JUST A SHORT TRIP HOME Bea and I just returned from a short trip to the UK and I thought it would be helpful to detail the required Covid 19 procedures. First of all you must be double jabbed and have obtained the Vaccination certificate. This is available on line but many people have had issues with this and it is easier just to go to your local health centre and ask for one. Secondly you have to complete an on-line UK government “Passenger Locator Form” This form is available at www.gov.uk/provide-journeycontact-details-before-travel-uk and is quite an extensive questionnaire. The form requires proof that you have ordered a covid test package for delivery to the UK ( see below) and also requires details of your flight, including your actual seat number, as well as your contact details whilst in the UK. When properly completed the system issues you with a four page Passenger Locator Form including a QR code. Thirdly you must arrange for a covid test kit to be sent your UK address prior your arrival. We were eligible for only the day 2 test and opted for the antigen test. The UK government web site at the suggested companies who can provide the test kits. Prices are around £35 to £50 for each kit. We got a confirmatory email from the supplier together with a reference number as required to complete your UK Passenger Locator Form. Fourthly you must arrange for a Covid test here in Spain before you travel. Again we opted for the Antigen test which must be done within 72 hours of your arrival time in the UK. - watch out for weekends and Public holidays. Quite a few clinics offer this service, some by appointment and some on a call-in basis. When we did our tests we did not make an appointment and found ourselves behind a quite large queue of UK holidaymakers who were having to go through the same procedure. The test is a mouth and nostril test probe and is relatively painless. Cost for us was €50 each but I believe it can be found cheaper. Antigen tests take only 15 minutes or so to get the results and you are presented with a certificate. Cont... 23

Fifthly you must get to the airport in plenty of time as the procedures are quite time consuming. Our airline had a lady walking down the queue and checking we had the correct Covid 19 papers. We took hard copies of everything and we noted a number of people fumbling with their phones in order to find the appropriate papers. The lady gives you a small piece of paper confirming that you have been checked and this must be produced at both the check-in and at the boarding gate. You are required to wear a mask at all times both at the airport and also on the plane. You are allowed to remove your mask whilst eating or drinking on the plane and our airline did have a snack service on board. On arrival in the UK you have to produce your Covid 19 documents at passport control. On day 2 of your trip you must do the Covid test using the kits you had ordered previously. Again this was a Throat and Nostril swab test which you had to carry out yourself in front of a mirror. The swab is put into a sealed test tube and is then posted back to the supplier who will eventually issue you with the results of the test. Before travelling back to Spain you must complete the Spanish Health Authority questionnaire, available on line at https://spth.gob.es/. This will result in the production of a “Spain Travel Health Pass” including a QR code. This document can only be applied for 48 hours before your return to Spain. Again a lady will walk down the queue at check-in in UK to check your Covid documents and issue you with a confirmatory slip of paper for presentation at the the boarding gate. On arrival in Spain, the Spain Travel Heath Pass will be scanned at a special health control station just before the baggage reclaim area. All in all an enormous amount of expensive bureaucracy for just a simple trip home!!! Submitted by Ron Sykes 25

WHAT IS OTTO? When I was very small, we had a German Shepherd called Otto, but that’s not the answer. I wonder how many are as unaware as I was that it is a name given to Rose Oil – whatever that is! For those who are still no wiser, and I mean the majority of the males of the species, rose oil is the basis for most of the world’s most expensive fragrances – that’s the stuff in the very expensive cut glass bottle that is inside the most elaborate packaging ever seen, and advertised on TV by the best paid models. So what is Rose Oil? Well, it comes from rose petals by one of several processes, all of which are costly. The roses themselves are grown specifically for the purpose and every morning, somebody will be getting up before dawn and ripping off the petals that are ready for processing. To give an idea of how many you will need, it takes about thirty kilos of petals to distil into ten grams of oil. That’s a lot of petals for not a lot of oil. And that’s why they are grown commercially for the perfume industry. The best roses for processing into oil come from a relatively few areas like, India, Bulgaria, Turkey, China and in what is left of Iran and Syria where they grow the Damask rose, and from Morocco, Egypt and France where they favour the Cabbage rose. There are three processes to choose from. Distillation - the traditional way that requires the petals to be heated in water for a couple of hours, the vaporised water and rose oil are then condensed and collected. The water is condensed a second time to extract the water-soluble oils which are essential to the final otto (or attar, it depends where you are) – which no longer smells of roses, by the way. Well, not fresh roses. A portion of the distillate is unsuitable for the perfume industry and is sold as ‘rosewater’ to the food industry and for skincare products. Alternatively - the use of a solvent to draw out the aroma compounds brings out the waxes and pigments as well. A vacuum is used to remove the solvent for reuse later, leaving a slab of waxy sludge that is called ‘concrete’, which is then dissolved in alcohol to leave behind the impurities and to arrive at what is then called the ‘absolute’. Because of the low temperature of the process, the result is of a perfume more faithful to that of the rose itself, compared with the distilled otto. Industry has stepped in and created another process - a carbon dioxide process that requires the petals and the gas to be controlled at about 73 27

atmospheres of pressure (about 1000 pounds per square inch) and raised to about 31 ºC temperature (a beautiful English summer day!). In this state, the gas is able to extract the aromatic compounds while maintaining the same quality of perfume, and at the end of the process, there is no residue of the gas. This is a very expensive process, and the costs are reflected in the prices charged. But it is very effective. When costs are high, there is always the risk of dealers dishonestly mixing other oils obtained from other plants, for example, the humble geranium. It just happens that the main constituent of rose oil is exactly the same, chemically, as oils extracted from the geranium and also from the palmarosa – and, guess what! They both smell sweetly of roses. A mix of ten-to-one (cheap-toexpensive) would go undetected, so what’s all the fuss about? The raw materials are one industry, the other is the manufacture of the perfume. While the Rose Valley at Kazanlak in Bulgaria or Kannauj in India may not be as well known at Grasse in France, the vast majority of otto comes from Asia. Submitted by Geoff Morgan
