FILM NIGHT

The first film night of the new season, while enjoyable, was sadly poorly supported -there was a total audience of only six people, a bit of a shame! The film was “Oblivion“ starring Tom Cruise as a space technician based on a deserted planet Earth which had been ravaged by robot aliens, who destroyed the moon and caused disastrous consequences for the whole human population, who have all evacuated to planet Titan.

There were beautiful images of the ruined Earth, apparently filmed mostly in Iceland.

Tom himself stars in an ill-fated, last ever, Earth -based love triangle, but, sadly, there was not much development of relationships or characters. Tom mostly wears his “wooden action man hero“ face whooshing around in an elaborate helicopter/plane device and firing lots of whizz bang gadgets everywhere. The special effects are good, better than the actual storyline. Morgan Freeman’s role was disappointing and rather wasted.

Not a waste of an evening though -for its genre it was quite entertaining if very predictable. For those who love special effects and clever gadgetry-spot on! And the ice creams were good in the intermission -thank you Sheila. Let’s hope more members come to the next film night!

QUIZ NIGHT - SEPTEMBER

Fran's quiz nights are always a bit different. That's because she gives us the answers!. Well, not quite as easy as that. The answers are in there somewhere you just have to sort them out. Multi-choice answers to the questions means you have to choose an answer from 4 given answers.

I asked Google this question "What is the most popular answer on a multi-choice quiz?" The idea that C is the best answer to choose when guess-answering a question on a multiple choice test, rests on the premise that ACT/SAT exams answer choices are not truly randomized. In other words, the implication is that answer choice C is correct more often than any other answer choice.

Well, I tested this theory on Fran's quiz this month and it most definitely wasn't true. If you don't know the correct answer you have to guess and take your chances there.

For this quiz, Fran produced a PowerPoint Presentation to avoid repeating the questions (with 4 possible answers) and hopefully allowing us a little more time to concentrate (and guess correctly) in many cases an educated guess was good.

The presentation was shown on the big TV and we had 3 teams of 5 or 6 arranged so that we could all see the questions and the possible answers clearly.

With only 3 teams each team was able to take home a prize.

Always a fun evening. Thank you Fran (and Ian for your input too). Thanks also to Doug Mitchell for running the bar for us.

Hope to see a few more attendees next month, Friday 1st October, when the quizmaster will be Doug Proctor.
