EDITORIAL: Wow! We can now start to notice the difference, the tourists have mostly returned to their homes. We can park, not get stuck behind piled high trolleys in the supermarkets, and get a table easier in the restaurants. It appears to have been a good summer for local traders. Also lot of entertainment this year for the holiday makers in both Estepona and Manilva areas. I believe July was reported to be the hottest on record! Lots now planned at your I.C.E. Club for the coming Autumn period to the end of year, and also thoughts for next year so please support the hard work done by the volunteer organisers. Remember to book early for the club Birthday Party in November, likely to be a popular event as was the September Welcome Back party, having virtually sold out in first week of sale. PRESIDENT’S LETTER Isn't it lovely to be able to park again after the summer now visitors have returned home! By the time you read this Rob and I will be in South Africa with four friends who we met at ICE about 12 years ago. It really reminds me of what the Club is all about, as most of us, when we move out here, have no relations or friends in Spain. October and November has many events so please support what you can. I'm pleased to say that Cindy Holmes is organising a fun evening in December, we really appreciate it when someone outside the Committee is willing to organise an event or trip, so if you have any ideas let us know. Catering and Bar are still desperate for volunteers. Please remember to return your dirty glasses to the bar before leaving the club. Next year we're looking into new places for trips so keep reading the magazine or check the website out. Hope to see most of you at the Club's birthday party. Sue Potter

Matters “Google Earth for Mars” NASA has launched an interactive website that lets you explore the planet Mars. On Mars Trek you can pan and zoom around the planet’s landscape and add layers of images taken by orbiting spacecraft. Mars Trek can be accessed at http//marstrek.jpl.nasa.gov. At the time of writing it is not available through Internet Explorer. We recommend Google Chrome. Windows 10 no longer includes Windows Media Centre, although Windows Media Player is included. You may wish to use another application such as VLC media player. This can be downloaded from www.filehippo.com. VLC has the advantage of being able to play a much wider range of formats than Windows Media Player. So even if you are not yet upgrading to Windows 10 you might wish to make use of this software. At the time of writing Microsoft are producing weekly updates for Windows 10. These updates include new functionality for the operating system. This is probably a good reason to delay updating until all the missing features have been included. Remember users of Windows 7 and 8 can delay upgrading until July 2016 and still get a free upgrade. Microsoft Edge One of the shortcomings of the new Microsoft Browser is the fact that it does not allow extensions. This means that programs such as Password Managers, Adblock+ will not work with Edge. If this causes problems then you are advised to use Chrome or Firefox or IE11 until such time as Edge will allow extensions. This is likely to happen before the end of 2015 iPad / iPhone Hackers Scammers are trying to steal money from Apple users by trying to trick them into paying £50 to fix their device. When browsing in Safari you may get a pop-up message stating ”iOS crashed”, your screen freezes and you are told to ring a US telephone number to get help. They will ask for about £50 to “fix” the problem. Save your money and don’t even ring the number. You can sort the problem out yourself as follows: 1. Turn on Airplane Mode. 2. Delete your Safari data (Settings, Safari, ‘Clear History and Website Data) 3. Close Safari, exit Airplane Mode and restart your device, If you have any questions or suggested topics for future editions, please email us vicloughran@siberme.com or peterdowd@siberme.com PAST EVENT

PAST EVENTS Tuesday 8th September - Garden Club Meet Submitted by Sandy Avis The Garden Club had their latest meeting in Keith and Helen Rumsey’s garden in Bahia Las Rocas. It was good to see so many members, especially the original Garden Club Leader – Sheila Thompson. We were all given a tour around Keith and Helen’s very full and interesting garden. Photos and names of all were displayed in photo albums. As always, gardening problems were discussed, cuttings were offered. Keith kindly offered members apples from their trees. Drinks and nibbles were plentiful and a very good time was had by all. A big thank you to Keith and Helen. Do remember the Garden Club within ICE is available to everybody. Whether you want to join us every month (free) at our meetings OR just want to know anything about gardening, please do not hesitate to contact me on sandyavis@yahoo.co.uk with any queries. I will try to provide the answers by putting your queries to our members who can hopefully offer advice. IMPORTANT: Sue (our President) rang me at home just as I was about to send this write-up for printing to ask if the Gardening Club wanted to do something for the Autumn Fayre on Saturday October 24th – a special plant arrangement perhaps? Please email me so I can pass on numbers interested. Also any of our members OR any ICE members who have some plants or cuttings they would like to give – please bring these along on the day. Another little reminder that now the weather has become cooler, it would be very helpful to have some volunteers to tidy up the ICE front flowerbed. The next Garden Club meeting will be held on Tuesday October 13th at 11.30 am in a member’s garden in Sabinillas. Please ask Wilma Keeley for directions. Tip of the month: A good way to keep (non-electrical) garden tools in good condition is to store them in a bucket of sand. This will keep them clean, dry and free from rust and corrosion. Tuesday 16th September - Ladies and Gents who like to Lunch Out A welcome return to Nellie g’s restaurant in Benavista, eighteen Juliets on this occasion enjoyed the meal and excellent service. Thanks to Maggie for the organising. An extra drink was required by some while waiting for an accident to be cleared that had blocked the road back to Estepona. Nine Romeos (a group that appears to be reaching extinction) also enjoyed a return visit to one of our popular venues the Curry Corner also at Benavista. This Indian restaurant serves very tasty food and the service is very attentive. Excellent 3 course menu selection for under 10€ that offers all flavours of curry to all suit tastes. Thanks Doug for the organising.

Should you have suggestions for any event or activity at your clubhouse, or for a trip whether for a day or longer period, please contact a member of the committee. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT 9

Tax Residence In Spain By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks 952 799 752 terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com Tax planning is a key step for people moving to or recently arrived in Spain, particularly for your investment capital, pensions and estate. Without a personalised, effective tax mitigation strategy in place you could easily end up paying more tax than necessary. Before you can start your tax planning, you need to be aware of Spain’s domestic rules for tax residency. This also applies for those who have not necessarily moved here, but spend much time or have a home here. You may be liable for Spanish tax without realising it. If you fulfil Spain’s resident rules, you are liable to Spanish income, capital gains and wealth taxes on your worldwide assets, as well as subject to Spanish succession tax (inheritance and gifts tax) rules. You are resident in Spain for tax purposes if any of the following apply: You spend more than 183 days in Spain in one calendar year. Your “centre of economic interests” (the base for your economic or professional activities) is in Spain. Your “centre of vital interests” is in Spain – i.e. your spouse and/or minor children live here, even if you spend less than 183 days . There is no split year treatment in Spain. You are either resident or not resident for the whole tax year (1st January to 31st December), subject to any period of residence in another tax treaty country before/after your Spanish residence commences/ends. So, if you move to Spain part way through the tax year, the date from which you become resident in Spain largely depends on when you arrive. For example, if arrive in the latter half of the year, you will probably find you are regarded as non-Spanish resident during that year, assuming you have not spent 183 days here. However, this depends on previous visits made to Spain, and if these have been significant or frequent, the Spanish authorities could deem you to be resident in Spain from an earlier date. Double tax treaties As a general rule you can only be treated as tax resident in one country or another. However, it is possible to fulfil the domestic criteria of two countries, in which case your tax residence status is determined by the double tax treaty. For example, under the UK Statutory Residence Test residence in the UK is determined not only by the number of days, but also what ‘ties’ you have with the UK that tax year. If you are resident in both Spain and UK under each country’s domestic rules, then ‘tie breaker’ rules come into effect. If none determine your residence status, it comes down to nationality. Cross-border taxation can be very complicated. Your tax planning needs to take the rules of all the related countries into account and the interaction between them. Take specialist advice to establish the most tax efficient solutions for your personal situation. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. So Where To This Year To Avoid The Crowds Pat and Terry Smith This year we decided on a visit to the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park near Almeria. We had to put back our trip by a day as after a hotel was booked Pat received a late appointment at the Costa del Sol hospital. So we thought as this was part way to our destination, rather than return all the way home, we would break the journey and decided to stop for a night at The Hotel Rural Almazara. A Moroccan styled friendly family run hotel with outdoor pool and restaurant, situated between Nerja and Frigiliana and just minutes from the Mediterranean Motorway. We had a very good evening dinner on the outside terrace with views to Nerja and the countryside. So next day we were back on the road passing acres and acres of ‘polly tunnel’ plastic greenhouses with their white roofs seen for miles either side of Almeria, we have never seen so many. They were perched on the side of hills all the way down to the coast. We were told the main crops being tomatoes early in the year followed by melons. If we were not passing ‘polly tunnels’ we were in a tunnel, all 25 of them counted by Pat. Our destination for four nights was Cortijo La Alberca www.cortijolaalberca.com close to the town of Nijar . We fell out with Bruce the SatNav as he guided us through the very narrow streets of the old town, finding out later there was a much easier and direct route. We were greeted on the drive to the cortijo by the friendly owner Celeste who showed us the facilities and then brought us a welcoming beer and wine. This charming, familyrun property is located 800 metres outside Níjar, in Andalusia’s beautiful Huebro Valley. It offers a garden with a swimming pool and orange, fig, almond and olive trees. The attractive room featured Moorish-inspired décor, with terra cotta floors, a private bathroom and terrace. Very rural and so peaceful for a quiet getaway. The Cortijo serves on its terrace a much as you can eat, hot or cold, daily gourmet breakfast, Dinner was also served on the terrace overlooking the garden and views and was home cooked by Celeste’s Mama and her paella was one of the best ever. We really enjoyed our stay here. Nijar: situated in the province of Almería between the Sierra Alhamilla and the far south eastern Spanish coastline has a Moorish old town. Renowned over the years for its superb handcrafts in pottery, ceramics and textiles, this exceptional corner of Andalusia is a stunning natural enclave, right on the edge of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Visitors are tempted to buy up all the brightly coloured rugs and blankets and the beautifully glazed traditional pottery. As well as the famous crafts and ceramics of Níjar, there is also a strong agricultural economy. Citrus fruits and especially oranges are cultivated in abundance. Other crops are potatoes, broad beans, garlic, alfalfa, corn, tomatoes and peppers, many of which are still grown in the ancient channels with the irrigation systems left by the Moors centuries ago. The watering systems are controlled rigorously to make best use of the precious water in this area, where severe drought conditions and not unknown. The landscape is generally one of farm houses and mills in amongst this hive of agricultural activity. >27 26

<<26 Cabo de Gata on the south-eastern corner of Andalucía is its largest protected coastal area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's most original geological features. The eponymous mountain range is Spain's largest volcanic rock formation with sharp peaks and crags in ochre-hues. It falls steeply to the sea creating jagged 100m-high cliffs, which are riven by gullies leading to hidden coves with white sandy beaches, some of the most beautiful in Andalucía. Offshore are numerous tiny rocky islands and, underwater, extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life. High temperatures and the lowest rainfall in the Iberian Peninsula has created a large semi-desert area, with characteristic shrubby vegetation and dwarf fan palms. The park also encompasses an outstanding variety of habitats, coastal dunes, beaches, steep cliffs, saltpans, substantial marine zone, salt marshes, and dry river beds. Cabo de Gata is one of Spain's most important wetland areas for breeding and overwintering birds, wildlife and includes many rare and endemic plants and endangered fauna. The saltwater lagoon that runs parallel to the beach and is separated from it by a 400m-wide sand bar. Is located between San Miguel and the Cabo de Gata headland, this lagoon is of outstanding ecological interest, particularly for its birdlife. Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs were all attracted by the area's rich mineral deposits like agate, jasper and, most importantly, gold, which was extracted from the mines of Rodalquilar. Other inhabitants were Berber pirates, who sought refuge in this remote corner of Andalucía, the dozen lookout towers dotted along the coast are evidence of attempts to repel them. The park shelters an extraordinary wealth of pristine waters off the peninsula ideal for underwater photography, diving, snorkelling, sailing, sea-kayaking, windsurfing and all types of fishing. Much of the coastline is only accessible on foot, via some well-marked footpaths and walks, especially between Cabo de Gata headland to San José and Las Negras to Agua Amarga. We explored the rugged scenic coastline over 3 days from San Jose to Mojicar not liking the latter resort where we saw no fewer than 5 stag and hen parties! We saw the illegal Algarrobico Hotel built on a cliff side within the nature reserve, what an eyesore of a building in the middle of nowhere without even a decent beach. On our second day, after exploring the coast, we travelled inland to El Saltador to visit an ex work colleague living there, and to return to Nijar we decided to look on the map for a cross country route back. We found a route near to the cliff top village of Sorbas, well known for its caves. Well this turned out to be a 24km winding drive up and down around the mountains with few barriers around the drops. It was a well surfaced road but not very wide, luckily we only saw two other cars. Pat and ‘Suzi’ (the car) were glad when it was over, Pat requiring a stiff drink!!! 27

‘Well I’ll Bee’ Submitted by Sheila Defries We saw this living sculpture on a recent trip to New York in June. It is an installation called Reclining Female Nude by Pierre Huyghe in the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art. We wondered why people were creeping around some bushes taking photographs so obviously we had to go and have a look. There was a bees nest complete with honeycomb growing on the sculpture's head, quite fascinating to watch. It is the first work in the MOMA collection to include living animals. The living bee colony stands in for the head of a figure cast from a bronze sculpture by Swiss artist Max Weber. Andrew Cote known as Manhattan's beekeeper, works with schools and businesses to keep honeybees in gardens and on rooftops and was involved with this project from the start. The sculpture was delivered to his farm in Mid-April and he had to follow detailed instructions about how to introduce the colony to the sculpture and coax them into making it their home. Tending them daily and encouraging them to build the draping, bulbous hive required by the artist. The sculpture was installed at 7.00am on a mid-June morning in a tree shaded spot within the Sculpture Garden. The bees were smoked to calm them and installers had to wear protective clothing to manoeuvre the base and then the figure, together weighing approximately half a ton, into place without harming or disturbing the bees. The hive is growing and the colony could reach 75,000. The bees nourish themselves with pollen and nectar from Central Park and other green spaces nearby. We are frequently told how essential honeybees are to our lives and this is certainly an interesting way to raise some awareness. They have even installed a webcam to observe the bees.
