Editorial: Well that was a very hot start to September, temperatures reaching record levels, looking back making August, apart from a few days, seem somewhat cooler. However, now the summer is well and truly over we can now find parking spaces and room in the restaurants! All best-laid plans, we thought the lift would be up and running by the time this magazine went to print, not yet the case. However, the area the lift is being positioned looks great. Well, I don’t know the problem with you members with computers, laptops, tablets or just a paper and pen but articles from yourselves seem to be few and far between. Due to this, I have now had to reduce the number of pages. Please, to ensure your magazine continues as a publication of interest and information, myself as editor for the present and the future editor needs your input!!!!!!!!!!! President’s Letter: We have had to say our final farewell to 3 members, Stuart Rodda who died in April, our thoughts are with his widow Jill and family. Les Holland died during August our thoughts are with Sue and family. Michael Whittley, our thoughts are with Maggie and family at this very sad time. Well the holidaymakers have gone and we are left with the quieter roads and shops but the sun is still shining apart from one afternoon, where did all that rain come from? In the Club we are moving into a busy programme, Welcome Back Party, Noughties celebration at El Estribo, Autumn Fayre and Treasure Hunt, so don't forget to buy your tickets. In between all those events we are off to Portugal. Deposits for Lake Garda trip in May are now required. Brenda is very short of chefs for the months November to February if you can help please see her she will welcome you with open arms! George Woodward is still in the hospital if you do have a free hour I'm sure he would appreciate a visit, see Barbara Salisbury or Joanna Mitchell for details. Fingers crossed that by the time you read this the lift will be in place and working, it's been a long and frustrating job but I hope it's all been worthwhile for those of you who will use it. Please remember, life's too short, don't put off to tomorrow what you could do today. Sue

SAD NEWS Sadly Mick Whittley passed away suddenly on the morning of Saturday 17th September. A popular member of the club will be greatly missed. Our sympathies go out to wife Maggie, sons Richard and Mark, all other family and friends. We regret to inform you of the passing of Les Holland on the 23rd August, a long standing member of the Club. Our sympathies go out to wife Sue, their family and friends. Sorry to tell you that another of our members died recently. Stuart Rodda died on April 20th. whilst here on the Costa del Sol. Our sympathies go to his wife Jill and family. This Months Recipe - Sardines a la plancha Sardines a la plancha are something that Spanish people prefer to eat out and I can agree in some ways, as the smell can linger if you don’t have a well-ventilated kitchen! I think they’re definitely worth it, though. You can barbecue them as well as it gives the flesh a sort of bitter flavour, which is delicious – just add some olive oil and lemon juice for the perfect finish. Ingredients: really fresh sardines, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, olive oil, for brushing, extra-virgin olive oil, to drizzle, flaky sea salt, lemon wedges, to serve. Method: Scale the sardines under cold water using your fingertips to pull and scratch them away. Pat dry, season and brush with olive oil. Heat a barbecue, heavy-based pan or plancha over a high heat. Cook the sardines for a couple of minutes, turning once, until charred and just cooked through. Remove the sardines and serve with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, a scattering of flaky sea salt, a squeeze of lemon and some crusty bread. Food For Thought The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible. George Burns 5

PAST EVENTS Club Lunch Out - Thursday 1st September At Bar Restaurant La Torre Over 40 hungry members attended the lunch, must have been missing the Thursday lunches at the club. Once again Pepe and his staff, having only recently returned from their holiday, were not phased by the number. Very reasonably priced 3-course meal including a drink. Thanks to Di Hackett for the organising. Tuesday 13th September - Garden Club Meeting - Venue Alameda Botanic Garden Gibraltar A nice big turn out of members met at the entrance at 2 pm and enjoyed an interesting tour of the gardens by a wonderful guide called Andrew. He has been a Tour Guide for nearly 25 years and one could not help but feel/see how much he loved his plants and trees. I think his enthusiasm for various plants rubbed off on us all. He gave a very informative tour, handing out cuttings as we went along, explaining how to plant/grow them, answering any questions etc. We went into a new building which looked like a mini Orchid House as in Estepona. Again he gave a full explanation of all the plants including water lilies and orchids. Unfortunately, because we were double the usual number for his tour and slower moving, we never got to see all of the gardens in the two hours allocated. But perhaps I can arrange another tour sometime. At the finish, Andrew had kindly put aside some cuttings in pots plus cacti and handed these out. He had very cleverly made a bird from a seed pod which he handed to Linda as it was her birthday. At 4.00 ish we all meandered up to the Rock Hotel for a much-desired cream tea. We sat outside on their lovely terrace and enjoyed lots of pots of tea, sandwiches and cakes. It was sunny with a bit of cool wind. However, by the time we left it actually started pouring with rain. Who would have thought it? I think we all agreed it had been a very pleasant afternoon. The next Garden Club meeting will be in the Spring next year. Time and place TBA Tip of the month: When it is extremely hot and some of your plants start to wilt, buy some children's umbrellas from the Chinese Supermarkets, take the handles off and when up, push the stem into the ground giving shelter over the plants. Lakes Trip - Wednesday 14th September Photo by Joan Thompson

Wednesday 21st September - Ladies Who Lunch Out Pato de Pekin, Estepona Port Twelve Juliet’s returned to this popular venue and enjoyed an excellent menu del Dia choice sitting outside on a lovely warm sunny day, excellent service. At just 7.95€ for a 3-course meal, including a drink on the house cannot be bad. If you are looking for an inexpensive meal when in the area this restaurant is consistently good. Thanks, Maggie and Brenda for the organising. Gents Who Lunch Out - Gastropub Viceversa, Estepona Port And twelve Romeo’s also returned to an old favourite for a choice of fish ‘n’ chips or meat pie. The fish was large and well cooked, not so sure about the meat pie, though. For once the Gents had to splash a bit more cash than the ladies at 12€, again including a drink, but not so bad. Once again excellent service. Thanks, Bob for the organising. Motoring News Despite attempts by the Guardia Civil to clarify the rules regarding how to use a roundabout on roads in Spain surveys have shown that more than half of drivers are not aware of which is the correct lane to use for their direction of travel. Others may know the rules but fail to practice them and a large majority do not use indicators or seem to think them necessary. The advice to all motorists is to be fully aware of the rules and to never trust other motorists on a roundabout. We must not only think for ourselves but to think what others may do. No change there then. 10

Preserving Your Wealth By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks

952 799 752

terry.wayne@blevinsfranks.com

We all have different circumstances and requirements, but the key financial objective for most of us is to preserve our wealth. First of all to see us through retirement in the standard of living we are used to, and perhaps to also leave our children and grandchildren an inheritance. In today’s economic environment, wealth preservation has become extremely difficult to achieve without the help of good advice. The major threats to the preservation of your wealth include the imposition of higher taxes; historically low interest rates; inflation; a loss of trust in banks; asset volatility and frequent changes to legislation, such as pensions and taxation. It is important to seek specialist advice to establish the best way to protect your wealth against these threats. The advice needs to be highly personalised – when you consider your family situation, source of wealth, income needs, short and long-term aims, time horizon, risk appetite etc, your situation is quite unique. You want an adviser who will be around for the long-term to provide guidance and recommendations both to yourself now and to your spouse and family after you are gone. They should take the time to get to know you, your needs and objectives, very well. They should understand how you want your family to inherit your assets and be looked after in future. Building up a close, long-term relationship with one advisory firm produces positive results and peace of mind. When it comes to your investment portfolio, it must be based on your personal situation and risk appetite - portfolios can carry a wide spectrum of risk, depending on the assets held within it, the proportions, and the level of diversification. It is therefore essential that you obtain an objective view of your risk tolerance. Your adviser can do this, for example, through psychometric tests, combined with their knowledge of your personal situation and aims. Ideally, your adviser would live locally so they fully understand what it is like to live here and have a deep understanding of the financial planning needs of expatriates and the Spanish tax regime. They should have suitable professional qualifications, and ideally, for British expatriates, the firm should be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK for providing investment and pension advice. The sooner you review your financial planning, and set it up with a well-thought out, long-term vision to protect your wealth, the sooner you can put it put it behind you and get on enjoying your life here in Spain. Blevins Franks Financial Management Limited (BFFM) is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK, reference number 179731. Where advice is provided outside the UK, via the Insurance Mediation Directive from Malta, the regulatory system differs in some respects from that of the UK. Blevins Franks Trustees Limited is authorised and regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority for the administration of trusts and companies. Blevins Franks Tax Limited provides taxation advice; its advisers are fully qualified tax specialists. This promotion has been approved and issued by BFFM. Solar Impulse 2 A Swiss-based team have recently succeeded in flying around the world, 40,000 km in a Solar powered plane without using a single drop of fuel. One of the last sectors of the trip was from JFK airport, New York, across the Atlantic, to Sevilla International airport in Spain. I had followed the progress of this plane on the Internet since it took off from Abu Dhabi back in March last year and decided I would like to actually see the arrival of the plane live in Seville. The arrival time was tricky to establish as the plane is very sensitive to weather conditions and in this case the arrival time, with about 8 hours notice, was forecast to be around 7:00am on Thursday 23rd June. This required that we should travel up to Seville on the previous Wednesday evening. So a rush hotel reservation and we drove up to Sevilla, all the time checking the updated arrival time of the plane as we went along. Finally, it was established that I would have to leave the hotel at 5:00 am!! Allowing time for travel to the airport and the identification of a suitable viewing point. A complication was that the plane can only land into the wind and thus I had to check with the various weather forecast to establish which end of the runway it would land. I eventually found a suitable spot and by this time could actually see the plane hovering almost above the airport. Spain had arranged a significant welcoming party which included a flypast by two Euro fighters followed by a flying display by the Spanish display team Patrulla Águila (Eagle Patrol) including smoke trails in red and yellow. The display team were some 20 minutes late which left the Solar plane stooging about in the sky awaiting completion of the display prior to landing. The pilot, Bertrand Piccard, had flown none stop for over three days and nights and was none too well pleased with the delay. The whole round the world trip was controlled from a centre in Monaco and they made available live on the Internet all the communications and tracking systems so that everyone could hear and see exactly what was going on. Eventually, the clearance to land was given and this is no mean feat as it requires that people have to actually be on the runway to “catch” the plane as it lands. This requires that two teams chase the plane down the runway on bicycles (Solar powered of course) and grab hold of poles extended beneath the wings in order to ensure that the plane does not tip sideways as it slows down. This is not quite as dramatic as it sounds as the plane is coming in at only 20 - 25 knots and lands in a very short distance. The main difficulty is gaining access to the runway and stopping all flights whilst the plane is landing - no mean feat at an operational International airport. The plane, named Solar Impulse 2, is completely run on Solar power which requires that it ascends during the daylight hours charging the batteries from sunlight and then descends during the night using the power in the batteries. This is quite a careful balancing act as the plane must always have sufficient power to fly through the night especially on the crossings over the oceans as there is no possibility to divert to a land airport. The plane flies up to around 28,000 ft and this requires the pilot to put on his Oxygen mask above 15,000 feet. The Oxygen supply is, in fact, the controlling feature of the flight as the plane could fly on indefinitely on Solar Power. The Pilot goes through periods of self-hypnosis in order to get some rest and the plane flies on a simplified Autopilot during this period. The control centre in Monaco has the facility to wake up the pilot, if necessary, by means of sending vibrations through straps attached to the Pilot’s wrists. >>Page 27 26

<<Page 26 The plane is a masterpiece of Swiss engineering and has a wingspan greater than a Jumbo Jet. The wings, tail and fuselage are covered by some 70,000 solar cells which feed into batteries powering the four electric-powered propellers. The plane has landed in Oman, India, China, Japan, Hawaii, San Fransisco and across the States via several airports to New York. Seville where I witnessed the landing and finally on to Cairo before completing the round trip back to Abu Dhabi. The two pilots were Bertrand Piccard, who made the first nonstop round-the-world balloon flight with Richard Branson, and André Borschberg..The Solar Impulse team was about 90 people strong, including 30 engineers, 25 technicians and 22 mission controllers, supported financially and technologically by over a hundred partners and advisers. The project cost some $170 million and took some 13 years to bring to fruition. Submitted by Ron Sykes

A POEM TO WHICH I CAN RELATE I remember the corned beef of my Childhood, And the bread that we cut with a knife, When the Children helped with the housework, And the men went to work not the wife.

Bathing was done in a wash tub, With plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.

The cheese never needed a fridge, And the bread was so crusty and hot, The Children were seldom unhappy, And the Wife was content with her lot.

I remember the slap on my backside, And the taste of soap if I swore Anorexia and diets weren't heard of And we hadn't much choice what we wore.

I remember the milk from the bottle, With the yummy cream on the top, Our dinner came hot from the oven, And not from a freezer; or shop.

Do you think that bruised our ego? Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the table And I think life was better enjoyed.

The kids were a lot more contented, They didn't need money for kicks, Just a game with their friends in the road, And sometimes the Saturday flicks.

Author, Unknown... If you can remember those days... Continue to enjoy your Retirement

I remember the shop on the corner, Where biscuits for pennies were sold Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic? Or is it....I'm just getting Old?

New Alphabet : A is for apple, and B is for boat. That used to be right, but now it won't float! Age before beauty is what we once said, but let's be a bit more realistic instead. Now The Alphabet: A's for arthritis; B's the bad back, C's the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac? D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can't read that top line! F is for farting and fluid retention, G is for gut droop, which I'd rather not mention. H for high blood pressure--I'd rather it low; I for incisions with scars you can show. J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend. K is for knees that crack when they bend. L 's for libido, what happened to sex? M is for memory, I forget what comes next. N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low; O is for osteo, bones that don't grow! P is for prescriptions, I have quite a few, just give me a pill and I'll be good as new! Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R is for reflux, one meal turns to two. S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears, T is for Tinnitus; bells in my ears! U is for urinary; troubles with flow; V for vertigo, that's 'dizzy,' you know.. W for worry, now what's going 'round? X is for X ray, and what might be found. Y for another year I'm left here behind, Z is for zest I still have-- in my mind! HAVE A GREAT DAY ! Submitted by Sue Potter 28

Matters October 2016 Be aware of this Scam and warn your friends. There have numerous reports of people being defrauded of money as the result of bogus emails. People who are transferring large sums of money e.g. from a house sale are using email to communicate with their lawyer. The criminals get wind of this and are able to intercept emails which give bank details and alter these to their own bank. The money is then transferred quite innocently to the criminals’ bank account and lost forever. Our advice is, if you are communicating bank details to another party, always deliver details in person, or use fax, and make sure the other party will only act on instructions delivered in this way. As a general rule always look at the address of the sender. If you do not recognise it, then delete it. There have been many cases of company servers being hacked and contact lists purloined. If you receive an email from someone you know, just double check the address. While the first part of the name might be genuine, look closely at the part after the @. This should give you a clue as to whether the address is genuine. Free Video Calls to / from any Phone. Google Duo can be downloaded from your app store and can be used on either Android or Apple Phones. It allows one to make free video calls to any phone, both Android and iPhone. More details next month. A Free VPN which enables you to conceal where you are. The internet is clever and knows where you are e.g. in Spain. The developer version of the internet browser, Opera, includes a free VPN facility which will conceal where you are and make it appear that you are in the UK or elsewhere. This can be downloaded from www.opera.com/computer/beta. Make sure you download the Developer Version. Please be aware that this is a Beta version and may not be perfect. You can still use other browsers but may want to use this version of Opera in order to utilise the VPN facility. Having downloaded the software, click on Menu (top left) and tick the box Enable VPN. When you visit a website you should see VPN in the address bar. Click on this and on the button Virtual Locations. A number of options appear and you can select the location that you require e.g. UK, USA, Germany etc.

Walker is the executioner, Haig is the victim, Moran is the judge, Collins is the police officer, Gooch is the witness, French is the murderer The explanation: 1. Moran knew both the victim and the murderer. 1.1 Therefore, he cannot be the victim or the murderer. 2. In court the judge asked Collins to give his account of the shooting. 2.1 Therefore, Collins must be either the police officer, the witness or the murderer. 3. Walker was the last of the six to see French alive. 3.1 Therefore, Walker is either the executioner or the murderer, because he was the last to see French alive. 3.2 Therefore, French is either the victim or the murderer. 4.
