President’s Letter

I returned from the UK a few weeks ago and we are still working under some restrictions, but now the Costa Del Sol has moved from level 3 to level 2 and hopefully will continue in the right direction. We are still wearing masks inside, and can now have 6 people at a table inside and 8 outside, but no dancing or live music events just yet. We have scheduled all our usual events to restart from September up to the end of the year and we hope to see many of our members return to the club soon and hopefully get the membership numbers back up to close to previous levels. The annual trip to the lakes has been moved to the end (29th) of September, in the hope that the weather will be a bit cooler by then. Tickets for this are now on sale. We will be holding our annual Open Day for New Members on Sunday 3rd October and will be posting fliers all over the area to promote it. Please, if you can, bring your friends and neighbours along on this day to meet us and see what the club has to offer them. Whatever you are doing and wherever you are, we wish you well and hope to see you at the club as soon as possible. Sheila Fox, President

PUZZLES

Like puzzles— There’s a new one every day on the ICE website! CODEWORDS (Answers Page 29) Codewords are like crossword puzzles - but have no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. With these letters filled in throughout the puzzle, you'll have enough clues to start guessing words and discovering other letters. SUDOKU (Answers Page 29) Place a number in the empty boxes in such a way that each row across, each column down and each 9-box square contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. 8

PAST EVENTS GARDENING GROUP After taking on the Gardening Group leadership from Sandy, it was always our intention to invite the group members, restrictions permitting, to our house down near the Manilva Beach chiringuito to view our efforts in getting to grips with growing and gardening in this somewhat new climate for us. (Guernsey’s tourism would boom again if the weather there ever becomes like it is here, and with climate change you never know!) In May we had done the leisurely Estepona Floral Stroll which had been open to all members and then in June the first club coach trip for a while had seen 20 plus club members visit the Palermo Park in Benalmadena followed by lunch down at the fabulous Art Deco marina. So for this ‘at home’ a really good turnout of the members occurred and about 14 of us managed to sit in the shade of our front garden. Amazing how many chairs were found! Rachel had prepared some very nice buffet food and I opened a few bottles of Cava, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Wine and beers were also served as was water, cokes and juices for those driving. Plants, cuttings and bottles were gratefully received (thank you) but were definitely NOT a prerequisite to attending! Some gardening advice and tips were exchanged and of course conversations were varied and covered not just the gardening topics. About 3 hours disappeared in a flash. Thank you Gardening Group members! Submitted by Alan and Rachel Lucas

PAST EVENTS COACH TRIP TO PALOMA PARK BENALMÁDENA - FRIDAY 18TH JUNE So this was to be the first coach trip the club had done for quite a while because of that nasty ‘C’ thingy! Well it almost didn’t happen! There were five of us of waiting at the Eroski pickup point and we waited and waited. No sign of a coach. Phones start ringing and it transpired that the coach firm did NOT have a booking for us. (Memo to self - check the booking exists the day before!) In the end a coach was found and about an hour late we were on our way with collecting people from the usual pickup points. There were 23 of us in the end. After a very enjoyable drive (when not driving yourself there is so much to see) of about an hour and a half, we were dropped off right outside the front entrance of the Paloma Park. People split into various groups and made off into the park. My particular passion is cacti and succulents, and there is a fantastic area for these in this park. Some of the plants are massive. Previous visitors had enthused about the variety of animals to be seen but whether due to COVID, this aspect was a bit disappointing to say the least! Two chickens, two rabbits, one goat and numerous terrapins were seen but the donkey area and the bird aviary were decidedly empty! Anyway strolling around the park with its trees and lake (although slightly green) was very enjoyable and relaxing. 10

The coach then ferried us down to the beautiful Art Deco marina where people strolled off in their groups looking for a suitable restaurant for some lunch. An Italian restaurant proved quite popular. Back on the coach at 5 o’clock (with a different driver this time) and a slight delay when a couple of people (no names!) were a bit late. Then a pleasant drive back to Estepona / Sabinillas etc. Anybody nod off? Hey, this was a really pleasant coach trip away. A big thank you goes to Di Hackett who did the organisation and to Dave Hackett who helped with the ‘attendance’ sheet so no one was forgotten! Submitted by Alan Lucas

ICE ACTIVITIES RACHEL’S ‘ BUMS AND TUMS’ CLASS This exercise class takes place on Monday mornings at 10.00am in the Club and is aimed at toning core abdominal and bottom muscles with gentle floor exercises. Men and women are all welcome, we start with a low- burn, lowimpact aerobic session for 5- 10 minutes to warm up and increase our heart rates a little, then graduate to floor work on our mats, using your choice of weights for resistance if desired.

We then do a standing cool down and gentle stretch session to finish off (approx. 50 minutes in total) Rachel is a YMCA –qualified aerobics instructor and will conduct a short health screening for the safety of any new class members. Those who prefer to participate in the class from a sitting position on a chair (rather than getting down on the floor!) are also welcome. The class costs 2 euros per session which includes a bottle of mineral water- all proceeds go to club funds. You will need to bring a mat for the floorwork , and wear leggings/ shorts and a loose t-shirt. The first class of the new Autumn/ Winter session will start on Monday 20th September at 10.00am - looking forward to seeing you then! Contact: Rachel Lucas I know a guy who’s addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop anytime. How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it. I have JUST discovered my age group! I am a Seenager (senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 55-60 years later. I don’t have to go to school or work. I get an allowance every month. I have my own pad. I don’t have a curfew. I have a driver’s licence and my own car. I have ID that gets me into bars and wine stores. The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant, they aren’t scared of anything, they have been blessed to live this long, why be scared? And I don’t have acne. Life is Good! Also, you will feel much more intelligent after reading this, if you are a Seenager. Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Scientists believe this also makes you hard of hearing as it puts pressure on your inner ear. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem; it is nature’s way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE! I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can’t remember their names. So please forward this to your friends; they may be my friends too. Anglican Church of Costa del Sol West SAN PEDRO at 10-00am Every Sunday we hold an Anglican Service of Holy Communion in the Hall adjoining the Parroquia Virgen del Rocio (near McDonalds). SOTOGRANDE at 12-00pm Every 2nd and 4th Sunday we hold an Anglican Service of Holy Communion in La Iglesia Sra.de la Merced, the ‘Big Church’. 1st and 3rd Sundays are Methodist Worship services. You will receive a very warm welcome at our Churches, and children are particularly encouraged to join in the Sunday school fun activities. We hold a Messy Church at Marlow’s Fish and Chip restaurant at the Eroski roundabout in Duquesa on the first Saturday of each month, between 11-00am and 1-00pm. This is well attended by children, who enjoy the various activities, and also parents and adults who come along to give their support. We conduct Wedding Blessings, Baptisms, Funeral services, and undertake pastoral care visits to the sick or needy. Coffee Morning each Tuesday in Sabinillas from 11-00am, at the Café American Bistro at the eastern end of the Paseo near the children’s play area. VACCINATIONS Chris Evans on Virgin Radio UK recently interviewed the two ladies, Prof Sarah Gilbert and Dr Catherine Green, who invented the AstraZeneca vaccine and have now written a book entitled Vaxxers. The reason they have written the book is because Catherine was standing in a queue on holiday waiting for pizza and heard a person in front saying they wouldn’t have the vaccine as they didn’t know what was in it. This made her realise they needed to explain how it came to be. It probably won’t change your mind but it was interesting to hear that they had been working on the Coronavirus vaccine for the past twenty years so it just needed tweaking to fit this strain. BOOK REVIEWS Has a book ever changed your life or altered your perspective on a certain subject? Because of the pandemic book sales have soared and people who have not read much in the past because of lack of time or no previous interest in reading have taken the hobby up with relish. I cannot claim to have read a book that changed my life but this book certainly changed my perspective. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult Jodie Picoult's books are always told from different characters’ perspectives. So you read about the characters’ beliefs, their feelings and the range of emotions that they go through. This book was published in 2016, set in the 90s and is about racism, which is always topical. The principal narrators are a black midwife, a white supremacist and the public defender. The author based it on a true-life story in Michigan when a white supremacist father refused to let an African-American nurse touch his baby. This book is set in Connecticut and Ruth Jefferson is an African-American midwife of over 20 years experience. During her shift, she begins a routine check-up on a newborn but then she is reassigned to another patient. She learns that the parents of the baby are white supremacists and don’t want an AfricanAmerican to touch their child and the hospital goes along with this request. However, the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery does she obey orders or does she intervene? Because of her decision, she is charged with a serious crime. Her lawyer, Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender takes Ruth’s case but insists that mentioning race in the courtroom, is not a winning strategy. Ruth is somewhat conflicted by this advice but she tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family especially her teenage son as the case becomes a media sensation. Ruth has a sister who has very strong views on white people and her life has taken a completely different turn from Ruth’s. We also learn why Turk, the baby’s father and his wife became white supremacists. Their views were frightening and hard to read about. The white, female, middle-class lawyer has her beliefs challenged. Kennedy does not believe she is at all prejudiced but after listening to Ruth describe her life, has to think again. The story is interesting, the court case is absorbing and there is a clever twist in the end. Submitted by Sheila Defries 26

I would like to highly recommend a book I read a while ago and having looked it out again I shall relish once more. The Penguin Lessons by Tim Michell; a true story of the authors career move to Argentina. While holidaying in Uruguay before taking up his teaching position he rescues from the beach an oil slicked young penguin their adventures together begin. An uplifting book to make you smile - funny poignant and beautifully written. Submitted by Trish Minta

Have you read a book that has made you think again, perhaps re-examine your beliefs, or just made you smile, that you would like to recommend? Just send me a few words. Ed.

FROM THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY The following are various snippets from history which readers may find interesting, strange, humorous or just plain bizarre. •

Due to an administrative oversight the ironclad USS Monitor, which had been commissioned on 25 March 1862 and foundered in at sea on 31 December 1862, was not officially declared "out of commission" until 30 September 1951.

Before the use of motor vehicles, in horsed armies, for every three animals used for riding or hauling artillery, two additional horses were needed each week to transport horse fodder.

In 1912, during a banquet at which Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany was present, 56 -year-old General von Hulsen suffered a heart attack and died before help could be summoned. Precious time was lost when his brother-officers tried to get his uniform back on after removing his ballerina's tutu....

During the War of the Spanish Succession (170 l-1714), the French Army annually lost about 25% of its men through desertion.

The homburg hat so common a few generations ago was popularized by King Edward VII, who had been greatly impressed by the headgear of the militia of the tiny German duchy of Hesse-Homburg.

The US official Defence Department Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms contains the line "Total Nuclear War. Not to be used. See 'General War'."

The chief designer of artillery for the French Army in the late 1800s was a General de Bang.

In 1793, an Austrian army was forced to surrender to the French at Mainz, because it lacked the cash to pay ferry fees across the Rhine River.

In 1943, the German Army requisitioned 6.2 million ink stamp pads to facilitate the processing of red tape, amounting to roughly one for every man and woman in the armed forces.

"Blighty" as a term for Britain was coined during the late nineteenth century by British troops stationed in India, deriving from the Hindi word "bilayati - home."
