PRESIDENTS LETTER MARCH

Another AGM to look forward to. I hope you make the effort to attend as what happens there is important to all of us. February has been a busy month with the very successful Pantomime, Pancake Day, Valentines Celebration and the Mystery Trip. March is looking like being equally busy with the AGM, St. Patrick's Night, the trip to Granada and the visit to the Salon of Varieties in Fuengirola to see the musical ‘Annie’ to round off the month. The monthly Ladies & Gents lunches are proving as popular as ever and Bea will welcome any suggestions for venues. Finally, see you all at the AGM. Doug Contacting Movistar (Telefonica) Go to www.movistar.es on the main page, click on ‘fijo’ (fixed line) at the top left. On the drop down menu, click on ‘servicios’ then on the next page where it says ‘Factura y Consumo’ click on ‘Accedar.’ On the next page, click on ‘registrate’ and then on the next page fill in the required details. Note that the ‘documento de identificacion’ is the ‘tarjeta residente’ in the drop down box, and the ‘numero de documento’ is the NIE number of the person whose name appears on the bill. Click ‘continue’ and you should be registered. From there you can access all your bills, report faults etc etc. Submitted by Doug Proctor

Members Letter When I was in England recently my grandson and his girl friend gave my sister and I a lift to the shops in town. As he parked in the massive multi storey car park I said it's a good idea to write down the bay number where the car was parked and the girl friend agreed and said she had put it in her mobile phone. After finding the lift we arrived in the precinct and thanked them, kiss, kiss and again I said I usually write down the name of the shop opposite the lift, as there were several lifts,--again this was already in the phone. Christine and I went off laughing wondering if their shopping list was in the mobile phone as well. What has happened to the pen and paper. ?? It must be an age thing. I still cut cereal boxes into strips for making shopping lists !! Norma Danby. 5

ICE Ramblers Club Unfortunately after nearly 10 years of organising the walks Rob & I have to temporarily postpone our leadership of the group. Fortunately, Sue Gearon has volunteered to become Walks Co-ordinator providing a single point of contact for each walk BUT will not be leading walks. Therefore, we will require volunteers to lead a walk. If you could lead a walk please contact Sue by phone or email and inform her date, walk and place and time of meeting, Sue in turn will then post the walks on a web page “Ice Rambling linked to the Club website. If a walk is cancelled or changed Sue will amend the web site or answer your calls. Hopefully postponements will be avoided as it will be possible to continue onto the next advertised walk on the list. Please if you can volunteer to lead a walk let Sue Gearon know as soon as possible, as Rob & I would hate for the Ramblers Group to disband and hopefully we will be returning to walks in May just in time for the annual BBQ. Also, please could all ramblers let Sue Gearon know their phone numbers and emails. To contact Sue Gearon: Email: suegearon@yahoo.co.uk Phone: 952 897 508 627 640 025 May I take this opportunity to thank Liz Harris for leading the walks over the last few weeks and to Sue Gearon for volunteering to become Walk Co-ordinator. Sue Potter Ramblers Please Note: The club does not have any Insurance Policy in force in relation to its Rambling activities, and all members and their guests participate entirely at their own risk. Neither the club nor any walk leader will be responsible for any injury or loss suffered by any participant however caused. Those attending rambling events should be suitably attired with stout walking footwear and carry waterproofs in case of weather change. You should carry a packed lunch and adequate liquids for duration of ramble. 9

Monthly Computer Tips – March 2013 Create Desktop shortcuts If you have programs or files that you access Windows Tip of the Month regularly, then it is convenient to have links to The WINKey activates START them on your desktop To create a shortcut to a program - Click Start | All Programs. A list of all the programs on your computer appears. You may need to use the scroll bar to browse through the complete list. Right click a program and choose Send to Desktop. This will now place an icon on your desktop from which you can directly run the program. To create a shortcut to something else - Right-click the desktop, choose New | Shortcut. You can create a shortcut to a file, folder, network computer, or Internet address. After you choose New | Shortcut, the Create Shortcut dialog box appears. Browse to the item, click Next, type a name for the shortcut, and click Finish. The shortcut appears on the desktop. If you create a shortcut by mistake or there are shortcuts which you no longer require, right click the shortcut and choose Delete from the drop down menu. This will not remove the program, only the shortcut. The program can still be accessed from Start | Programs. Scam of the Month - March 2013 The Bank Scam Can you believe this one? You might think “How stupid can you be?” but apparently it is true. A man named 'John Moore' rang Mr. A. and said his bank had called him regarding a £1,200 payment made that morning in an Apple store. He told Mr. A to phone his bank and ask to be put through to John Moore. Mr. A put the phone down and called his 'bank', using the number John Moore had given him, and spoke to him again. He then told Mr. A to hand Remember the Computer Group meets at the over his Visa cards to a third party courier, who Clubhouse on the third Friday of the month at 11.00am. No need to book – just turn up. We have turned up 20 minutes after the call. He was also told to stay on the line. Because he thought he WiFi broadband internet available, so why not was dealing with his bank, he followed his instruct bring along your laptop / netbook / ipad etc. -If you have any questions or suggested topics for tions. What happened was surreal, but Mr. A fell for it. the future please email us He even told John Moore his PIN number over the vicloughran@siberme.com or peterphone. He lost £900 but, fortunately, it was fully dowd@siberme.com refunded by the bank within two days. NEXT NOVICES COMPUTER MEETING FRIDAY 1st The moral: Never give a PIN over the phone or online. Real banks will never ask for it. The most MARCH they might request is two or three characters of a NEXT COMPUTER GROUP MEETING FRIDAY 15th MARCH - Ipad PRESENTATION - DEBRA COLEMAN password but never a PIN. Submitted-Peter Dowd 10

PAST EVENTS Friday 18th January - Málaga Trip On 19th January Bea Sykes organised a very successful bus trip to Malaga which included a visit to the Motor Museum and a shopping expedition to the ´rebajas´. First drop off was at the Museo Automovilistico de Malaga which was opened in 2010, and is housed in a beautifully restored building originally constructed as a tobacco factory. The car collection belongs curiously to a Portuguese gentleman who, in 2007, agreed with the Ayuntomiento of Malaga, to display 85 vintage cars in a newly created museum. The cars are displayed like works of art in a space more reminiscent of an art gallery than a traditional museum. Every vehicle has been immaculately restored and they are kept in pristine condition. Each one is clearly labelled and described in Spanish and English which makes for comfortable viewing and easy understanding of the exhibits. Following a natural path through the museum, the cars which are mostly from the first half of the 20th century, are presented in chronological order. The cars range from a tiny Austin 7, through a huge Hispano Suiza, to performance cars like the gull wing Mercedes 540K and the Aston Martin DB4 of early James Bond fame. Of special interest to the ladies is a special section devoted to outlandish hats created to complement the opulence of the cars of the era. The second drop off was in the main shopping area of Malaga near the cathedral and permitted people to explore the sales. Judging from the number of bags brought back to the bus there was no shortage of bargains to be had. Submitted by Ron Pegrum Additional Information on Motor Museum: Entry Fee: €6.00, Seniors €4.50 Address: Av Sor Teresa Prat 15 (Near the station) Open: Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 – 19.00 Monday 21st January - New Members Welcome Evening Unfortunately for the second year running there was more committee members and organisers than new members, only seven having attended. Doug, with the help of others, explained what the club was all about and aiming to achieve. This event needs some serious consideration of its arrangements by the committee before next year. Tuesday 29th January - Ladies and Gents Lunches Out To ladies who lunched that day I must apologise for the appalling slow service we received at the venue Miel in Sabinillas. Though the food was very good this was all that saved the day. I felt we were treated like unwanted customers and if the one and only waitress had not done her best to cope I would not have left a tip. Be assured we will not be returning and not recommending the venue to friends as a party booking. Once again my apologies. Patricia Smith Better luck for the gents at the Last Resort, for the end of January it was so warm we were able to sit outside in the sun. Excellent meal, good sized portions (we ate all their large gammon steaks) and good service. Friday 8th February - Fish ‘n’ Chip Supper Once again this regular event was well supported. Choice of large, medium or grilled fish, accompanied with chips, mushy peas, gherkins and sauces, all served with bread and butter. Seconds of chips were available. Then there was choice of sweets for those that could manage them. Well done Bernie & Diana, Mick & Maggie behind the bar, & waitress Sue Potter. 11

PAST EVENTS Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd February ICE Players Production Well done the producer, Julie and the crew of "Cinderella Revisited" The story was at least 20 years on from the original with the glass slipper; instead Cinders found her Prince, not as modem as on internet dating but by a very colourful Fairy Godmother!! All the costumes and wigs must have had Designer labels. Where they found the ’OH SO UGLY’ yet entertaining sisters I do not know. Everyone played their part well and the show was topped off with Johnny Porter supporting with live music. I am certain the packed audience went home After a very pleasant evening with big smiles on their faces.

Tuesday 12th February - Pancake Day At The Club Doug and I arrived to find Dan resplendent in his full chefs outfit looking every bit the professional. Dan & Wilma were busy in the kitchen preparing the pancakes and pans for the pancake races which consisted of two laps around the pool with the pancakes being tossed three times at each corner under the watchful eyes of the judges. The judges were Di Burns, Derek Fee, myself and Martin Monahan and we did our best to make the contestants laugh and drop their pancakes. We were lucky with the weather as the sun came out and the wind dropped and it was perfect for the race. The ladies winner was Sandy Avis and the Gents winner was Dave Hackett, so congratulations to them both and to everyone who took part. After the prize giving, we all enjoyed the excellent pancakes supplied by Dan Cook and Wilma Keeley. It was a really splendid effort as 80 pancakes were enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks also to the very busy bar staff, Sheila & Roger Defries. A very enjoyable morning. Joanna Mitchell Saturday 16th February - Valentines Party This was announced as a club trial, the using of an outside caterer, and what a successful evening it turned out to be. The idea being to enable any of our hardworking kitchen volunteers to enjoy an evening at the club and be waited on. The only volunteers on the night were the bar staff and thanks go to Joan and Tracy. The club was nicely decorated with a romantic valentine theme, Doug thanking those that attended during the morning to carry this out. The very popular John Porter entertained us with suitable background music during the meal, and later music for dancing. Many members came with masks adding to the atmosphere of the evening. The meal was prepared by Mar, chef Anthony and staff of de la Mar Restaurant, served by their friendly waitresses. Starter was a nice tomato and roast pepper soup, main course a roast beef dinner accompanied by Yorkshire pudding and assorted vegetables. An alternative was Cajon cod. A choice of sweets: fruit or chocolate very light pudding with ice cream and custard. All served nice and hot and plenty for everybody. The ‘Girls’ all got a valentine present, and winners of the raffle enjoyed nice ‘liquid’ gifts. General consensus was a great evening and if John Porter hadn’t brought the music to a halt we could have been there after midnight. Thanks Doug for the organising, a great success. Many members are regular customers at de la Mar, if you have not yet been it is recommended. Good varied menu with specials at reasonable prices.

Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners Daily Specials, Themed Evenings Upper Level (Road Leading To Car Park), Estepona Port I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words. 13

Once a UK citizen has registered as a European Citizen residing in Spain, and obtained a Residents Certificate, and they are the holder of a valid UK driving licence, they may either exchange their licence for a Spanish driving licence or continue to use their UK driving licence. 2. If they decide to continue to use their UK driving licence, they must conform to the regulations governing Spanish driving licences, and go to an Authorised Medical Testing Centre and pass the test which is required of all Spanish drivers, in relation to vision, hearing and eye-hand co-ordination. From the age of 18 to 45 this test must be passed every 10 years; from the age of 45 up to 70, every 5 years; and from 70 onwards, every 2 years. (Currently the cost for this test and certificate is about €50) 3. This medical certificate must be carried with their current UK driving licence. 4. When your UK licence expires, you cannot legally renew it with DVLC if you are resident in Spain. (According to EU regulations, a driving licence must be issued by the country where the holder resides) So, before your UK licence expires, legally speaking it should be exchanged for a Spanish driving licence. For example: If you move to Spain and take up residency, and have 6 years still to go on your UK licence, you can use it for 6 years as long as you obtain and keep your Spanish medical certificate up to date. After that the UK driving licence must be exchanged for a Spanish driving licence. Talking of Residency Certificates: According to new requirements which came into effect in July last year (Ministry Order 1490 of 9th July 2012) a Spanish Residency Certificate now must be renewed after 5 years. Although the certificates have no expiry date, and their is some suggestion that the requirement may be in conflict with EU rulings, the regulations must be followed and you should renew your certificate after 5 years. You have the right to protest to the European Parliament. Incidentally, on renewal their may be a need to meet new requirements in relation to proof of sufficient income and membership of a private medical scheme if you are not entitled to Spanish Social Security. Speaking of Protesting to the European parliament: A list of Spanish MEP’s can be found at http://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/ performsearch.html and their email addresses can be found at http:// www.worldhorsewelfare.org/you-help/spain_meps Submitted by Doug Proctor A woman came home, screeching her car into the driveway, and ran into the house, she slammed the door and shouted at the top of her voice ‘Honey pack your bags, I won the lottery’. The husband said ‘Oh my god what should I pack, beach stuff or country stuff’. ‘Doesn’t matter’ she said, ‘Just get out!’ For the thinker:

Kitchen secrets Some years ago when I was working in my Hotel/restaurant the local paper asked me about the secrets of being a busy restaurant. I found this article in a old file so I thought it would be fun to reprint it after all these years, time has very little difference on methods in a kitchen. 1 Q What is the best cookery tip you've ever received? A Always taste when cooking, the ingredients are always changing and the flavours need to be constantly checked and rechecked. 2 Q What is the best cookery tip you would give to others? A Cookery is something you enjoy and get a lot of satisfaction from . The day I stop having fun in the kitchen and start seeing cooking as a chore is the day I hang my apron up. _ 3 Q What six basics should we always store in the kitchen cupboard? A Sea salt, black peppercorns, olive oil (for cooking and dressing), Lea & Perins, sherry vinegar (it has a better flavour honey it can be used for savoury dishes). 4 A What are the six basics we should always have in the fridge? Q Unsalted butter, eggs, fresh herbs, onions, celery and crème fraises. 5 Q What is your favourite indulgence nosh? A Cheese in all its many forms with fresh celery and a crusty roll. 6 Q What is your favourite kitchen gadget? A I would be lost without a blender, its essential for making soups and sauces. 7 Q What's your fail safe dish? A Fresh spaghetti or pasta with tomatoes, basil and herbs de province, for some reason I never tire of these ingredients. 8 Q What would be your ideal menu for a casual dinner with friends? A Simple fish, tasty food is essential, it’s always a good idea to bake a whole fish or leg of lamb rather than trying to cook for everyone individually. 9 Q What would be your idea for a romantic dinner for two? A It would start with Scallops & bacon; the main course would be honey roast duck with orange sauce, braised celery, peas and new potatoes. For a dessert a lemon soufflé. 10 Q What's the biggest No - No when cooking? A Don’t try something new unless your prepared, and don’t try to take on to many things at once, too much can go wrong.

Poetry Corner Please don’t be offended, it happens to us all!!!!!!!! A fart is a pleasant thing, It gives the belly ease, It warms the bed in winter, And suffocates the fleas.

A fart might not smell, While others are vile, A fart may pass quickly, Or linger a while......

A fart can be quiet, A fart can be loud, Some leave a powerful, Poisonous cloud

A fart can occur In a number of places, And leave everyone there, With strange looks on their faces . From wide-open prairie, To small elevators, A fart will find all of Us sooner or later.

A fart can be short, Or a fart can be long, Some farts have been known To sound like a song......

But farts are all bad, Is simply not trueWe must never forget....... Sweet old farts like you!

A fart can create A most curious medley, A fart can be harmless, Or silent, and deadly.

Has your UK photo card license expired? Photo card licences replaced paper driving licences in 1998, yet these must be replaced every 10 years. A whopping two million photo cards are now out of date as of January 2013, according to the DVLA, and a further 2.6 million driving licence photos are due to expire in 2013. Under the new system, photos must be replaced every 10 years - (no matter how young you look!) It's all too easy to forget, but a quick check now could save you a fine of up to £1,000 if your photo card has expired. Check yours NOW!!! There are a few dates printed on the photo card, but the one you need is the photo's expiry date, printed on section 4b on the front of the card. If you really can't find your photo card, see how to renew below. How to renew: The process is the same whether renewing or replacing a lost or stolen licence. There are three ways to apply: Online: You can apply online at Gov.uk, providing you've a had a new digital passport issued in the last five years. By post: Alternatively, anyone can get forms from most Post Offices in the UK, or order one from the DVLA website. In person at selected Post Offices. Though if you do this, it'll cost an extra £4.50 on top of the standard £20 fee. How much does it cost? You need to renew every 10 years, and there's a £20 fee for each renewal. You should be sent a reminder and form about two months before expiry. However, as many miss this or forget, it's well worth making a note of when yours expires. If you only need to update the address, or you're over 70 and you're just renewing it, this is free. There's no limit to the number of times you can update your address for free. Peter Dowd 28

It is a privilege denied to many." Submitted by Sue Potter A man walked into a Woolworth's supermarket in the UK and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy working in that department told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce. The man was insistent that the boy ask the manager about the matter. Walking into the back room, the boy said to the manager, "Some old geezer wants to buy a half a head of lettuce." As he finished his sentence, he turned around to find that the man was standing right behind him, so he quickly added, "and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half." The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way. Later, the manager said to the boy, "I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier, we like people who can think on their feet here, where are you from son?" "New Zealand, sir," the boy replied. "Why did you leave New Zealand ?"the manager asked. The boy said, "Sir, there's nothing but call girls and rugby players there." "Is that right?" replied the manager, “My wife is from New Zealand!" "Really?" replied the boy, “Who did she play for?" Submitted by Doug Proctor
