Acombination of form and function, cosmetic dentistry addresses the aesthetics of color, position, shape, size, alignment and smile. Cosmetic dentistry is an umbrella term that refers to dental work that improves the appearance of teeth, gums and bite. Med Dawoud, DMD, owner and president of D&G Dental, explains the benefits.

What types of procedures are considered cosmetic dentistry?

There is an array that Dr. Paula Gencarelli and I perform including crowns, veneers, bridges, implants, teeth whitening, recontouring the gum using a laser and fitting Invisalign® braces.

Why choose cosmetic dentistry?

It’s a confidence booster for people who don’t like to smile—for those whose teeth are chipped, gapped, stained, crooked or suffering from any number of other cosmetic problems. Certainly, the aesthetics are important. However, cosmetic dentistry can improve the smile of a patient whose teeth have not formed properly or are injured due to trauma. At D&G our goal is to improve oral health and aesthetics at the same time. We achieve this by creating custom-designed smile makeovers.

Med Dawoud, DMD Are there advantages of implants instead of dentures?

What advances have occurred in the specialty?

The greatest advancement is that procedures can be completed in one day. Materials have gotten stronger and more realistic in appearance to natural teeth. We can digitally create a smile the patient can see before treatment begins. This digital capacity lets us proceed based on the patient’s wants and needs and a professional opinion. The procedures have evolved to become minimally invasive, resulting in less post-op sensitivity.

Dentures have to be removed and most people need a denture adhesive. They don’t feel the same as natural teeth and patients say food doesn’t taste the same. Implants are the next best thing to natural teeth. They are durable, aesthetically pleasing and immovable.
