Berkeley Heights Photographer Offers Book to Save the Rain Forests

rganic Portraits is the realization of nearly two decades of dedication by Berkeley Heights photographer John F. Cooper. The 96page coffee table book is a collection of stunning large format images that were created using natural, organic elements in unique hair fabrications. The majority of the images were produced using traditional 4x5 and 8x10 Polaroid film. All of the profits are being donated to the Rain Forest Action Network’s Protect-anAcre program, which provides small grants to indigenous rainforest communities that focus on the protection of their forests. Cooper started the series in 1998 after learning about the clearing of the Brazilian Rainforest. He says, “I was doing very well in my career, and I was making a good living, and I wanted to do something personal, something that would benefit the world.” After several starts and stops, including a successful Kickstarter campaign, Organic POrtraits hit the shelves at the end of 2015. The book is printed using environmentally responsible materials and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. It is available through www.Amazon.com or www.JohnFCooper.com. Cooper, an award-winning photographer, has been published in such publications as Allure, Elle, GQ, Rolling Stone and Vogue. He also taught photography as an adjunct professor at Seton Hall University.

1,000 Pounds of Holiday Cheer & Counting

uring three weekends—from October 20th through November 8th, student volunteers of the Red Oaks Middle School collected more than 1000 lbs. worth of Thanksgiving food donations for the Interfaith Food Pantry. The group gave Red Oaks shopping bags to Walmart customers asking that; in return, they purchase Thanksgiving food items and drop off their donations as they left the store. Food was delivered to the organization throughout the drive by parents of the school. Faculty advisor and foreign language teacher Noga Beer said, “The children and I witnessed generosity and community spirit in action. The people donated with a smile and a good word; they appreciated the children’s work, enthusiasm and focus. I was proud to stand with them.”

Summer camps can help children learn new skills and meet new friends. There are many great reasons to send your children to summer camp.

Dr. Jeff Leary (continued from page 37) Dr. Leary is just one of six doctors who is qualified to perform robotic surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston using the state-of-the-art MAKOplasty® surgical robot. Barnabas is the fourth hospital in New Jersey, and the only one in the Vicinity area, that has the million-dollar MAKO robot. Last month, Dr. Leary was the first doctor ever at the hospital to perform a partial knee replacement using this technology.

The MAKO robot currently is utilized for partial knee replacements only, but by 2017, technology will be available to perform total knee replacement as well. When a patient needs a hip replacement, a surgeon may take one of four different surgical approaches. Dr. Leary’s preference, assuming the proper circumstances, is the “direct anterior” approach. This innovative method allows him to go between muscles instead of cutting through them to perform the hip replacement. By doing the surgery in this new way, the patient has a shorter recovery time with less scarring and pain, and lower dislocation rate than the traditional “posterior lateral” approach.

Dr. Leary, a New Jersey native, graduated from Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2005. He is proud to have served our country while on active duty with the United States Air Force. He retired as a decorated Major, after serving two combat support tours with a Special Operations Surgical Team. fresh beginning with a new year is the perfect time for a health assessment to ensure you are ready to take on a full and active year ahead. Even if you’re feeling great, it’s a smart practice to take time to identify potential problems before they become more serious health concerns. Early detection of ailments, such as cardiovascular disease, can significantly impact an individual’s ability to cope with the disease, allowing you to make adjustments such as changes in diet and lifestyle, or when necessary, drug therapies and other medical treatments. Delaying detection of this serious disease until its more advanced stages can have dire consequences. With these three steps, you can get a better picture of your cardiovascular health and identify silent, hidden risk factors (like plaque in your arteries) that you may not even know are there.

Get your blood pressure checked. Blood pressure measures how much force a person’s blood is putting on the artery walls as the heart pumps. High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when your heart has to work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. High blood pressure often happens when arteries lose their elasticity through hardening caused by cholesterol, plaque or scarring. Many people do not experience symptoms of high blood pressure, so it’s important to have your blood pressure checked periodically. Screening for high blood pressure involves placing a pressure cuff around your upper arm to monitor both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. A normal systolic reading is between 90 and 119, and a normal diastolic reading is 60-79.

Get your cholesterol checked. A simple finger-stick screening measures total cholesterol as well as three different kinds of lipids in your blood (HDL, LDL and triglycerides), which are important in determining your heart health. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as the “bad” cholesterol and can build up in the walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Along with other substances, it can form plaque - a thick, hard deposit that can clog those arteries. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as “good” cholesterol because it carries LDL away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it’s passed from the body. A high HDL level helps prevent heart disease, while a low HDL level increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Triglycerides are the most common type of fat. Like cholesterol, they circulate in blood but are stored in the body for extra energy. A high triglyceride level combined with a low HDL or high LDL can speed up the process of plaque formation in the arteries.

Learn about other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Many people in the early stages of cardiovascular disease are asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms to indicate their health is at risk. Some common risk factors include age (55 and older), family history, tobacco use and high blood-pressure, other factors, such as high cholesterol, aren’t as easily observed. Preventive health screenings, such as those provided by Life Line Screening, can give you a fuller picture of how risk factors may be stacking up. BREAKTHROUGHS With The King of the High Wire

et’s look at the second definition’s “perceived obstacle.” Many times the obstacle we face is in our own mind and becomes built up as something bigger than any other obstacle we will encounter. It will block more achievements, discoveries, and personal growth than all the excuses we’ve ever heard or have given. That obstacle is fear. I interviewed someone who understands fear better than most of us and brings his insight from a unique perspective.

Nik Wallenda, King of the High Wire, is a seventh-generation member of the world famous Flying Wallena family. He holds seven world records for his feats. New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, signed a bill into law allowing Wallenda to walk a high wire over Niagra Falls between the United States and Canada in 2012. Wallenda is also the first person to walk across the Grand Canyon on a tight rope without a safety harness. Barry Farber: What does the word fear mean to you? Nik Wallenda: What a lot of people call fear, I call respect. What I mean by that is I don’t fear heights, I respect heights. I realize there’s deﬁnitely a risk there, but I also know with the right training, preparation, skills, and ability I can overcome the fear. A handful of wire walkers have tried to get permission to walk across Niagara Falls for the past 30 years and none of them succeeded. I think a lot of that had to do with fear. As soon as they had a door shut in their face they turned around and gave up. My great-grandfather taught me to never give up. (If) you pursue your goal and you’re persistent about it, you will reach it no matter what the challenge. Fear is very debilitating; it takes the life out of you, no matter what you’re facing. The key is to be willing to face your fears, respect your fears, and know that you’ll make it through. BF: I’d like you to expand on that word, respect. What can people do in their daily lives to overcome more of their fears and grow in the process? NW: The most successful people in the world are risk takers. Risk takers are also the most conﬁdent people. It’s all about the mentality of how you go into a situa-

tion in your life. My grandfather said life is on the wire and everything else is just waiting. Your attitude controls your thoughts, your emotions, and the level of your success. I’ve had many doors closed in my face but had to keep a positive attitude during the process. I look at the end goal and not try to focus on everything in between. BF: So respect means that you study your craft, you train and prepare so that you diminish the risk. That preparation in itself makes you more conﬁdent. NW: That is a huge part of it. Preparation is the key element leading up to the event; it’s also another reason why we were successful in convincing both governments to allow the walk. This situation’s challenge was dealing with two countries with two different types of laws that are over 100 years old. In the history of my profession nobody’s ever had to change a law, let alone the laws of two countries. But I always knew if I went in there with the right attitude and I was prepared properly for it I would come out with the outcome I wanted. We planned and made sure we covered every detail. The naysayers ask, “What about your safety, the public’s safety? What about the land?” We are prepared for anything that’s going to come our way.

BF: What do you think about fear being good for you if you learn how to control it? Boxing trainer Teddy Atlas once explained that fear is like ﬁre: it can heat your home, warm you, cook your food, but it can also burn up everything around you if let it get out of control. NW: There is a very close connection between fear and respect in my opinion. It all relates back to being prepared. Most people say “this guy must be out of his mind, he walks on a wire for a living!” What is normal to me is not normal to others. I’ve only walked on the ground a year longer than I’ve walked on the high wire, which I started doing at two years old (Nik is 33 years old). BF: All the preparation helps us stop thinking when the actual event comes to fruition. In martial arts we call this “mushin,” no mind. If I have to think of what type of kick or strike I’m going to use when someone attacks me I’ve already lost. You cannot think; you must be so prepared that you act without thinking. NW: Yes. Respect for the event means you prepare to control the fear, maintain a positive attitude, train until there is no thinking, and never, ever give up.
