Why You Must Guard Your Heart

The heart is a majestic organ. When you assess the functions of the heart, one is most definitely inclined to see that its indisputable purpose is not just to spare you from physical death, but even more significantly spiritual death. One can be breathing, but is in fact actually dead. One can be conscious, but still be unconscious in the land of the living. One can be awake, but their subconscious has flatlined and they dither precariously on a tightrope without realizing that when they fall into death, life has really just begun and it was the condition of their heart that plunged them into utter darkness.

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. ” (Prov 23:7 - NKJV). That' s why it is so important to guard your heart as it relates to the kind of seeds you plant because the seeds will determine the type of roots, branches, leaves and even fruit which are produced; good or evil. Your heart’ s condition is the precursor of your outward actions.

One of the functions of the heart is to pump blood throughout the body. When an individual experiences a heart attack, death may occur due to a lack of oxygen to the brain, since the heart pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system, while supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. I am therefore led to ask this question: What kind of nutrients is your heart transmitting to your brain? Is your heart pumping blood of bitterness to your mind? Is it pumping blood of vengeance, hatred, doubt, insecurity, self-hate, envy, jealousy, malice, anger, greed, lust or is it pumping love, selfcontrol, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, gentleness, forbearance and patience?

Remember, what you entertain in the heart becomes embedded in your thoughts and what you think is reflected in how you behave. Your behaviors; how you see life, how you problem solve, how you treat others, how you love or hate, how you interact with others, your choice of friends, are ALL a reflection of your heart’ s condition. How you choose to handle the matters and affairs of life, reflects your heart’ s position, its caliber, as well as its competence to overcome and not become like the world we live in.

Our hearts are physically in the world but we have to work diligently, with deliberate industrious actions and preventive measures to protect it. We must work steadfastly to guard and therefore keep out the negativity that this world can thrust at us. If we don 't do this, we will handle every situation negatively. The truth is, we can 't guard our hearts without God’ s divine help. It is impossible!
