The Polk-Sherard-Hinman house. The home was built in 1924, but the property’s history goes back a century before that. Part of a large parcel of land that was divided, recombined and divided again over the decades by various investors, the land was owned by a who’s who of Vicksburg notables. Family names such as Smedes, Klein, Floweree, Dabney, Bowmar, Leyens and Birchett. The land remained undeveloped through the civil war, laying astride the siege lines and seeing sporadic combat. It wasn’t until 1924 that Paul and Alice Polk built the splendid Norman French house that graces the top of Confederate Avenue. Today, following a series of renovations and expansions, and homeowners the house and its beautiful grounds are home to Mary Jane Wooten, who continues the long tradition of care and attention this beautiful property deserves.
