Our cover photo features holiday decorations at the historic Baum House. Now located at the corner of Cherry and Baum Streets. The house was built circa 1840 a few blocks to the east, in the midst of apple orchards purchased by Jacob Baum in 1859. After Baum’s death in 1891 his widow moved the house to its present location. Today it is the home of Bob and Frankie Alvarado, who continue to preserve its antebellum charm. After the civil war, union soldiers were stationed near the house. Today the only neighborhood sentinels are the Alvarados’ Christmas nutcrackers.
