Our success rates continue to rise! As colleagues will be aware through our Strategic Intentions plan, the college set itself ambitious success rate targets for 2013/14 with the clear objective of consolidating and building upon the year on year performance of recent years. The finalised performance for 2013/14 has now been completed and I am in a position to inform colleagues that our success rates have once again improved. In terms of these key performance indicators the college now performs easily well within the top quartile for general further education colleges nationally building on our very strong showing in 2012/13. More detail, including our recent performance by age and level categories, will be in the end of term briefing. In the meantime I would like to congratulate everyone for their contributions to this achievement. Derek O’Toole
Higher education students graduate in style On Thursday 25th September, 80 students graduated from Hopwood Hall College at a glittering ceremony at Rochdale Town Hall watched by their friends, family and special guests including the Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Carol Wardle. Students at the event graduated from a range of different courses, including Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) in mechanical engineering, early years, games development, health & social care, performing arts and coaching and sports development. This year’s event celebrated 22 years of higher education programmes at the College and for the first time we introduced a student representative to speak during the ceremony. Holly Espie, who graduated with a Foundation Degree in Coaching and
Sports Development, was nominated by her course tutor Mark Fagan and said… “The awards we received that evening were the results of lots of hard work, and determination. None of which would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of our teachers, our fellow students and our families and friends. Being nominated to speak on behalf of the graduates who attended was a great opportunity to thank everyone and say how grateful we all were.”

William Hague meets The Apprentice It’s not every day that the First Secretary of State visits you at work, but that’s exactly what happened this week to apprentice Jack Gough and Alan Hurn. Jack and Alan, both from Rochdale, work for leading school art suppliers Colorlord in Middleton. The duo got the chance to meet the Rt Hon William Hague MP when he visited Colorlord along with Iain Gartside, who Mr Hague was supporting in the Heywood and Middleton by-election.
Jack is the first apprentice the company has taken on through working in partnership with Hopwood Hall College. Jack, who has followed in the footsteps of family members into accounting, studies with the college one day a week as part of his accountancy apprenticeship and is thoroughly enjoying it.
Alan was also helped into his role by Hopwood Hall College. He attended one of Training @ Hopwood’s courses for the unemployed earlier in the year. Since starting as a warehouse assistant in June, Alan has gone from strength to strength and thanks to the company’s work place training scheme is now studying for an NVQ in warehousing and logistics with the College. Talking about his visit, Mr Hague said: “It has been great to visit a growing and successful business and to meet apprentices who are a great example of what is being achieved in this country.” Colorlord Managing Director, Calvin Lord said: “I’m delighted that Mr Hague took time out to meet our team and find out about our products.”

Students raise money for health promotions Fundraising activities within the Centre for Childhood Studies started a pace in October as students look to complete and evidence ‘Unit 5 Promoting Health and Well Being’.
Stand up for Cancer – activities included sweets in the jar, halloween themed raffle prizes, learners made pink ribbons to sell as well as homemade chilli chocolate. A special mention to Abbi, Leah, Steph and Shannon for their sponsored silence of a whole hour!
Three groups took on the challenge to highlight a particular area of health promotion and raise money for each charity.
Teenage suicide and depression - raffles of chocolates, Christmas jewellery gifts. sweets in the jar, homemade cakes and orange ribbon badges.
Following lots of preparation, great team work and promotion, the teams ran the following campaigns and raised £99 in the process.
Stoptober - group used a unit calculator, beer googles and leaflets to raise awareness about the dangers of excess alcohol and smoking and had a raffle of chocolates and gifts.
Cuppas and cake raises money for Macmillan On Thursday 25th September the Riverside Salon took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan cancer support. Beauty students nail it! Three students on our Level 3 Nail Technician course took part in a professional beauty competition again 24 other learners from across the country at Manchester Central in October. Shannon Musgrave, Tara Tattersall and Jessica Poole had to apply natural tips with an acrylic overlay and were judged on the application, the structure of the nail and the overall finished look. Lecturer Vicky Kielthy said:
Shannon Musgrave, Tara Tattersall and Jessica Poole
“The learners did really well and were very professional. Competing allows the learners to gain more confidence and to keep up to date with current industry trends which will make them more employable. I am very proud of what they have achieved at this stage of the course.”
College helps pupils find their future careers Each week 130 year 10 and 11 pupils from Matthew Moss High School are spending an afternoon with us taking part in taster sessions including animal care, painting and decorating, joinery, motor vehicle repair, health, and hair and beauty. The taster sessions are running for ten weeks and are designed to help the pupils find out more about possible career options. The pupils have been thoroughly enjoying the sessions and trying out things that they wouldn’t normally have a chance to do. In the animal care session pupils are learning how to look after animals, and have recently been checking the College’s rabbits eyes, teeth, ears, and nails, and also learning how to check for fleas, and take their temperature. While on the painting and decorating taster sessions, pupils put together different designs for paintings based on a Halloween theme. The project gave the students the chance to practice decorating skills such as ‘cutting in’ and using tape to mask off areas so that the
finished result looks as professional as possible. Now the students have mastered these skills, they will be doing other decorating projects in the coming weeks such as hanging wallpaper, stencilling and using decorative effects like sponge stippling and rag rolling. Hazel Sarras, Programme Manager for Science at Hopwood Hall College added: “These taster sessions are proving really popular with the pupils. We design them so that they get to learn new skills but in a fun way. It’s also a way to provide a taster of the different careers out there for them, and gives an insight in what to expect if they choose a career in these areas.” A spokesperson for Matthew Moss High School said: “The pupils are having a fab time. It’s really good hands on experience.”
Performing arts opens its doors at Middleton campus Hopwood Hall College has recently opened the doors to the new Performing Arts department, situated in Littleborough building at the Middleton campus. The department boasts new purpose built rehearsal spaces, creative workshop rooms,
a dance studio, and soon to be opened is a state of the art, 150 seat theatre. This new development ensures that the department can offer a holistic approach to the performing arts industry, giving students ownership of their work and progression. The new theatre will offer the opportunity for outside practitioners and theatre groups to use the space, and this will allow the students to gain an insight into the industry as well as working alongside some
of the industry’s professionals. In addition to this, there has already been interest from casting agencies, with students taking part in paid work opportunities. The team have also taken advantage of the vast surrounding grounds, holding their first ever site-specific performance in the woods at Halloween, and have more planned for the future.

The event, which took place in September, is held outside The Oak pub and competitors use Lancashire Black puddings to knock down as many Yorkshire puddings on a scaffolding tower. Each year thousands flock to watch the proceedings and enjoy live music into the evening. This year the special guest was ex Coronation Street actor Graeme Hawley who, like our students, really enjoyed the day.

Each year the college runs a ‘Keep Warm’ campaign that targets all learners who have applied for a full-time course starting in September 2015. Our commitment this year is to send every student one piece of communication each month from December to August, to help keep Hopwood at the forefront of their mind and make us their preferred choice when they look to enrol. This year our campaign is being co-ordinated by Katherine Wilkes, our new Marketing & Admissions Officer, who will also target learners that apply but don’t attend interviews as well as those who change their mind and go elsewhere. Each week Katherine is contacting these ‘no show’ students to get them on offer or find out why they are no longer interested. Our first keep warm mailer went out last week…a chocolate filled advent calendar! This was sent to students of all ages who had applied for a course up to 20 November, therefore capturing all those who attended our last open evening.

Students create ghouls at farm of terror Students from our Media Make-up course brought nightmares to life as part of an annual Halloween scare-fest at a Lancashire farm. The drama took place at Huttock Top Farm in Bacup from 24 October to 2 November 2 saw visitors brave a maze of corridors and hidden rooms filled with spooky surprises. College students have been involved in the Farm of Terror event for the past seven years, painting the faces of the ghastly characters and bringing them to life. This year, our media students also got involved by playing the parts of the monsters and beasts.
Steve (left) receiving his award from Derek O’Toole
Becky Shaw, make-up artist and tutor said “The learners worked really hard on this production alongside other students from Accrington and Oldham College. The event was an amazing success with several reviews on websites about how amazing the SFX make was.”
Star of the Month
Becky added: “The project is wonderful for the students because it gives them excellent work experience which is a real asset when they leave college and start to look for work“
Congratulations to the Steven Boyd from the IT Services Team who was awarded Star of Month in September 2014. He received a trophy and a £50 gift voucher for a store of his choice. When the going gets tough - UPS get going! In September, four members of the UPS staff and one of their students entered the notorious Tough Mudder event at Cholmondeley Castle near Chester with proceeds going to Help for Heroes. Designed by former UK Special Forces members Tough Mudder events are reportedly the toughest of their kind and test all-around strength, stamina, determination and robustness. The North West event consisted of 22 major obstacles including Artic Enema and Electroshock Therapy to name just two spread over a 12 mile cross country route. joined by student Elliot Mottershead and others to form ‘Mudley Crue’. Everybody successfully completed the course and thoroughly enjoyed a superb day out, so much so that some have already registered for next year’s event. Paul said “Taking part allows you to unlock a true sense of accomplishment, have a fantastic time and discover camaraderie with fellow participants that’s experienced all too rarely these days!”.
