STAGE DESIGN THEATRE DESIGN Crimes of the Heart 2015-2016
C oncept
The script of my project for a play was based in the 1960s in Taiwan. It showed the reality of those times, and my design demonstrated a ‘real home’. However, instead of establishing the four walls of a house-like home, I used the concept of a circle for the home scene, and it included many realistic details. This was more interesting than just building the usual house, because the circle included lots of meanings that the script sought to deliver, as the characters were trapped in an emotional loop; the circle conveyed the loop, trap or situation of no exit. This circular form was very useful for this script since it contained all that was needed for the performance.

The audience viewed the play from two sides, so they were outside and inside at the same time, and they were able to circle most of the stage when they entered the theatre. Due to this, structures were problematic to design because there was no place to hide the suppor ts. To solve this problem, we used the original house structure to suppor t the whole stage and make it look natural. Lighting design also presented challenges in creating such a realistic setting.

Double view stage Audiences walk in from back side to the theatre; however, the show is performanced at the front side. Irregular floor To represent the idea of broken family in the script, this unusual shape of the floor make this tragedy stronger.
Second floor Upper floor is an important but mysterious space in the script. However, in order to strengthen the imagination of this space, I design it as abstraction instead of creating a real space.

C oncept - Trust, is the only way to access Utopia. This site has many different functional places. Whatever people want to do in this area, they can find their interests. But for ‘utopia’ in this place, I would like to provide people with different experiences to rethink and redefine utopia. S i n c e t h e s i t e i s m a d e o f t h e T h a m e s r i ve r a n d i t s e m b a n k m e n t , I divided the installation into two par ts; a land side with the concept of Thomas More and a river side with the concept of my own ideal utopia. This installation is based on tr ust. The only entr ance people should walk into is the river and they should trust it to access the buildings in the water and on the land. The whole installation provides a jour ney t o t h e p u bl i c ; i t i s a n e x p e r i e n c e a b o u t t r u s t a n d s o m e t h i n g yo u have never done before and you can enjoy it as you walk through.

The whole installation is an ar t journey that gives the public a chance to not only see the ar t works, but also the process of creating them. The connection between the public and ar tists is much closer than it would be in a galler y. Ever y place in the installation could be a showroom to present the ar t, even outside the building. For this reason, trust is needed for ar tists and the public because whatever and however ar tists show to the public, people should trust and experience it. Ar tists should also trust people who may touch the works or watch them when they are creating. The tr ust between people is more difficult than tr usting objects, bu t i n t h i s p l a c e e ve r y t h i n g i s b a s e d o n t r u s t , a n d yo u c a n o n ly enjoy the journey when you tr ust ever ything you see or cannot see.

Watch. Listen Movie projecter Sitting on the roof of the building in the water It is a fresh but excited way to enjoy video.
When creating, ever y ar tist will be recorded in their working process for presentation to the public by video. During the day, people can sit on the roof of the tallest building in the river and sunbathe; however, at night, people can watch the movie from the roof. The building height is 6 meters, so it is a really challenging test for people to sit in the middle of the river and trust that it is safe. The most impor tant thing is to enjoy the movie at the same time.

T rust with sences Touch When the tide is high, people can feel a little unsafe as they are at the same height as the river. It is a new experience to touch water so easily. The bridge is the only entrance to the whole installation, and it is the ‘first trust’ for the visitors. Because the bridge is built inside the river, the change of the tide will give the public different feelings, especially when the tide is at its highest, requiring much trust when you find that the river is at the same height as your shoulder or even over your head.

Touch. Listen Low tide activity We always build something to make us feel safe and to separate water and land, such as a fence. Based on my concept of utopia – trust and breaking boundaries – I want to let people make a connection with the river. For this purpose, I needed to not only take away the fence but also do something with the water, and the cube path is the best way to make people experience something unusual but also fun. Adults can walk through, relax and feel the wind and listen to the sound of the river, while children can play safely in the river, touch the sand and look at the animals. Everyone can find their own interest to enjoy.

Smell Ever y ar t mater ial has its own smell, and people can tr y to s m e l l d i f fe r e n t a r o m a s w h e n a r t i s t s u s e d i f fe r e n t e l e m e n t s t o create their wor ks. It is easy to ignore the power of smell, but the sense of smell is so impor tant to us in knowing the wor ld. The whole installation is not only a place where people can relax and see ar t works, but also a place giving people something new to experience . So, smelling is quite a challenging way to tr ust and an unusual way to enjoy ar t works. To be a par t of the utopian journey, smelling makes the whole journey more complete, using ever y sense. Pe o p l e c a n a l s o s t a n d u n d e r t h e b u i l d i n g a n d t h i s i s a n o t h e r tr ust. A rt journey Low Tide Journey
High Tide Journey
When the tide is at its lowest, the building is not covered by water so people have another choice to go up to the embankment along the cube path. The path is built from different sized cubes just like Lego or stairs, and people can walk in the river but not get wet. It needs strong trust to have courage to believe that you will not fall into the water. When the tide is high, these cubes will be all covered by the river and this will be quite interesting to the public.
When the tide is at its highest, staying inside the building which is under the water can feel unsafe even though it is safe. Since the material of the building is frosted glass, people can have the feeling that they are drowned when they are not. They may also enjoy the ar t exhibition created by the artist who has been invited to work in the studio.

Relationship with Utopia Installation To extend the idea of trust to the Royal Festival Hall (RFH), there are two aspects which will be presented. To change the concept of previous RFHs, I designed a complex connection to replace much of the glass on the building. In addition, the material I used in this project was similar in concept to the previous installation. The most important point of these two projects is they both focus on real access rather than bar r ier s, and the access is based on tr ust. 35
C oncept Original Backstage place
In the design history of the RFH, the latest additional part was built with plenty of glass to unveil the building to the public. However, in my design to change the programme I use the opposite idea, to make it complex and mysterious but with real access. To design the new programme for engagement and participation in this generation, I decided to unveil backstage activities to the public, to create an experience journey like the previous design. Backstage activities will always be mysterious for audiences, who want to know what happens before every performance. For theatre workers it needs a high degree of trust to show the public the secrets of backstage and not all backstage works will be unveiled.

The maze has complicated connections and is the main concept that I designed for this new programme and old building. Even though it looks complex, if you just follow the direction which is well-organised you will find your own way. In this case, you need much trust to keep walking even when you see that the way in front of you is dangerous or unsafe. However, if you trust the design you can access the fantastic backstage journey. Be c au se th e R F H is a h u ge an d c o mplicated bui l ding, the new addi tional desi gn w i l l n ot d e s t r oy t h e e x i s t i n g s t r u c t u r e a n d i t w i l l b e d e s i g n e d ‘ i n b e t we e n ’ t o p l a c e e ve r y r o o m w h i c h h a s b a c k s t a g e a c t i v i t i e s i n t h e f r o n t a n d avo i d d e s t r oy i n g t h e o r i g i n a l s t r u c t u r e s . Stair s and r amps will be designed to connect each room and complete the maze jour ney. In terms of material, I will use steel in the outside frames and stairs to make it strong and safe but look fragile at the same time. For ramps, glass will be used to make people feel more unsafe but interested.

Hotel Proverbs Taipei is located in eastern Taipei, which is the busiest and lively a Taipei. Apart from the many department stores and restaurants located in clos very popular night market is located just next to the hotel, meaning residents w both noise and air pollution. Therefore, even the temperature is comfor table in spring and autumn but other weather condition still can be hard for people to stay outside for long. As a result, I star ted to notice this issue and rethink to design a solution to improve the climate disadvantages in Taiwan, then make outside be possible to relax.

Hence, sustainable approaches will be applied n. This presents a key factor for the redesign of the outdoor area of this hotel, for people to rethink the nment around them. Furthermore, it is important for individuals to enjoy and feel confident in the outdoor mportant to note that the redesigning strategies are not solutions, but improvements to the current situation.

Double Glazed Windows In Taiwan, we seldom use double-glazed windows since our climate type. However, this kind of design actually can reduce noise from outside and cut off the hot or cold air flow. As a result, an important feature of this redesign place is going to use doubleglazed windows, making the space owns function and flexibility at the same time.

Solar panels can be regarded as roof to resist r ain, and also can save the energy to supply power for hotel electircity use.
