BEIJING RESIDENCY 2009 PAINTINGS BY HANS VAN WEEREN
RED GATE GALLERY - BEI GAO STUDIO #4 EXPOSITION
Introduction to a long and winding road After a 3-month’s journey through Thailand, Lao and Vietnam I arrived on the southern border of China. My destination was Beijing where I had a residency in one of the artists studios of the Red Gate Gallery. With lots of images in my head I started to work on a series of paintings which should reflect my feelings in paint, on canvas. The long road I took from home to here had given me so much inspiration. Had taught me how wonderful people all over the world can be. Had shown me so many different landscapes. Had given me some new friends and above all, was a wonderful trip through a colourful Asia. So, I hope you can share with me all those wonderful sights and special moments.
About Hans van Weeren Hans van Weeren attended the School of Arts d'Witte Leli in Amsterdam, graduating in 1981. While his heart always belonged to painting, he received his degree in printmaking. Since 1976 he has exhibited extensively paintings that are at once both abstract and figurative. As a part-time teacher he taught at Lieven de Key from 1982 till 1986. Since 1991 he has resided in Nieuwkoop, the Netherlands, working full-time as a painter and with other visual art forms. Since 1999 he has lived and worked in le Rialet, France during the summertime and in Nieuwkoop, the Netherlands in wintertime. Critics say that his abstract work shows a rich color and a diverse complexity of form. Even at their most abstract the reality of the figure is never lost.
