House For Elderly People

Academic Projects

Victor Ioan Pricop

The theme of the project was imagining the ‘ideal living space’ for elderly people. The site is situated in the outskirts of Bucharest and has 28.000 square meters.

[site plan]

The whole concept behind the project is that of a tree branch. The entrance and the commun areas are situated in the biggest branch and the rooms in the smallest branches. The complex can accomodate 180 people: seniors, seniors with disabilities, senior couples, medical personnel and single young people. Every room has its own courtyard that they can make their own and personalize it. In this way the project encourages the approach between man and nature.

High-Rise Office Building

12

Academic Projects

Victor Ioan Pricop

The challenge of the project itself was to integrate a high-rise building at the limit of the traditional urban fabric and in the same time make a connection with the new city.

The position for the office building was chosen between the two main crossroads, near the industrial part of the city. A commercial pedestrian street links the two boulevards through the building. A row of small office buildings represents a filter for the green area inside the plot where the employees meet for lunch brake or coffee. The building has terraces at lower floors opening towards the old part of the city, creating a relation with the nearby park.

The Slow Street

Architectural Competitions

Victor Ioan Pricop

We live in a society where everything is fast and everybody is in a hurry, but what if we stay for a minute and reflect on what is happening.

Enjoy life for what it really has to offer. Take your time.

[site plan]

Every component of the slow street is ment to slow down the speed of the people passing through it. Although most of us now live in an urban environment we all crave for the natural factor. A common element and aparently a simple one, the grass, has an uncontestable impact on the wellbeeing of the psyche and can provide and intimate place where people can relate in a more profound way. The role of the moving walkway is to change the rythm and, in this case, acts like a buffer zone, like a filter that introduces the person from one space to another.

The challenge was to redesign the seafront of Cala Millor while struggling with the existing problems that the site had: the destruction of vegetation, the parking spaces near the beach and the discontinuity of the seafront. [concept sketch]

A turistic site brings together different cultures, classes and ages. The project erases the boundaries between people and connects them with the environment triggering feelings, emotions, thoughts and opinions.

There are two ways that ships die: they become obsolete vessels or they are lost at sea due to war or severe weather. [old vessels/shipwrecks]

The Shipbreaking Tower is a self-sufficient building, located close to the entrance to Chittagong’s harbor that seeks to dismantle not only obsolete vessels but also shipwrecks that will be recovered from South Asia Pacific region. It concentrates in one construction the dismantling of the ship, the melting of steel and the production of bars. The Tower addresses workers living and work safety conditions, protection of the environment, and the improvement of recycling ships. It also has the role of a tourist attractor and a gate to the city.

The Shipbreaking Tower

Shore Connection

Ship Dismantling

- the docks make the connection with the city for the workers, tourists and provisions

- cutting the hull with the help of workers and machinery - transporting the pieces into the tower with cranes

Loading Area - the cranes load the containers onto the ships

30

Architectural Competitions

Container Handling

Victor Ioan Pricop

Research Facility - offers new solutions for the environmental problems created by the shipbreaking industry

Temporary Housing

Recycling Steel Area

Public Space

Filter System

Wind Breaker

- housing area and vegetable gardens for the workers

- part of the scrap metal is melted in the electric arc furnace and transfered into the ladle, than it is cast into billets. - the rest of the scrap metal is going directly to the rolling mill area

- restaurants for workers and tourists, museum and the garden connect the three tower -as a lighthouse, it signals the entrance to the city

- the combustion gases are filtered in the upper area and released in the atmosphere as clean air

- the vertical strips in the upper area of the facade permit the wind to flow through it

Metal Shredder

Rolling Mill Area

Electricity Recover

- the scrap metal and the steel billets go into the reheat furnace and turned into finished rods and bars

- the heat from the furnace is used to boil water and is turned into steam - steam turns a turbine - turbine turns a generator that makes electricity

- turning the metal pieces into scrap metal

Container Deposit

Packing Area

Administrative Offices

- the containers are stacked in the deposit and are ready for distribution

- the rods and bars are packed and put in containers

Philharmonic Headquarters

Professional Projects

Victor Ioan Pricop

Starting from the brief of the contest organized by Cluj-Napoca City Hall, our team found the following problems: the site is not central located and it is closed, the urban context is mixed and the area has a low public interest.

[greenhouse]

[vertical access]

[concert hall]

[green foyer]

[passage/main entrance]

[urban stairs]

[public square]

[site plan]

The project introduces an element that generates order in space, a green axis for pedestrians that connects the two major streets surrounding the site. This axis brings together the philharmonic headquarters, the conference area and the different workshops for dance, theatre, cinema. All of these elements work together to obtain a clear and functional urban space, leaving it possible for a future reconfiguration of the area.

The project opens towards the main intersection with an existing public green space. A coffee shop and a bio supermarket create a connection with the street. The design of the building focuses on light and comfort. Different sized frames create a dynamic facade that becomes more intense as the distance from the neighbouring building increases. The mirrors inside the frames allow more light to go into the apartments.
