Empathy. Criticise the lack of empathy and the self-centred world in which developed countries live. We live surrounded by information but it is increasingly common to look for a way to ignore all the problems that occur in the world, a way of escape that gives us the possibility to disconnect. Eyes that don’t see, heart that doesn’t feel. In order to do the critique, show a world that is insensitive, that feels nothing when watching a film, that is incapable of feeling empathy while for example reading terrible news. Every product, image or video extremely full of insensitivity, totally distant from any personality or message.
Language. The relation that words have in our thinking and how by modifying them is possible to change the way we see things. Examples that can be addressed are the queer movement/non binary pronouns, sexist language... As well as to address the difficulties of making these changes due to fear or attachment to tradition. The main element through which the message of the project would be shown would be the typography, accompanied by the animation and perhaps the video.

Perfectionism. Talking about how perfectionism has two very different faces, a good one but if you take it to the extreme it can become a problem. Show its relation with depression and anxiety, and how it manages to paralyse a person who is unable to move, to act, to perform even simple tasks. Talk about depression from personal experience.

6 degrees
Six degrees of separation is the theory that any person on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The six degrees of separation theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called “Chains.”

Is there actually any science to back up this commonly cited theory? Derek Muller investigates in the latest episode of Veritasium. If you just take a look at the numbers, the six degrees of separation idea seems pretty plausible. Assuming everyone knows at least 44 people, and that each of those people knows an entirely new 44 people, and so on, the maths shows that in just six steps everyone could be connected to 44’6, or 7.26 billion people - more than are alive on Earth today. But is there any experimental evidence to show that’s the case in IRL social groups? As Derek explains, the whole basis of the theory came from a 1929 short story called
Chains, in which one of the characters challenges the others to find another person on Earth that he can not connect himself to through fewer than five intermediaries. This idea wasn’t scientifically tested until the 1960s, when a psychologist sent 300 packages out to people in Nebraska and Boston, and asked them to use their networks to get them back to one specific target - a stockbroker living in Boston. They weren’t asked to forward it to him directly, but to send it to someone they knew on a first name basis, with instructions for that person to forward it on to someone in their network that they thought might know the stockbroker. language itself shapes a man's basic ideas.
Language influences thinking
George Orwell in his novel 1984 gave an example of language influencing thought with his use of the term doublespeak, which is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words..…in effect changing what we think about a given subject or thought-form. Language can be an incredible tool for change, both positive and negative. It can be seen as being used to conquer entire nations and inspire untold billions. As linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf said,

Tower of Babel, in biblical literature, structure built in the land of Shinar (Babylonia) some time after the Deluge. The story of its construction, given in Genesis 11:1–9, appears to be an attempt to explain the existence of diverse human languages. According to Genesis, the Babylonians wanted to make a name for themselves by building a mighty city and a tower “with its top in the heavens.” God disrupted the work by so confusing the language of the workers that they could no longer understand one another. The city was never completed, and the people were dispersed over the face of Earth.
culture
Since antiquity there are stories that try to answer the question of how the different languages that are currently spoken in the world came about. One very well known is the one from the Bible, The Tower of Babel. This research can be very useful for the project and the development of a narrative similar to these stories that in many occasions hide metaphors or teachings to make them easier to understand.

The Rosetta Stone is a stone with writing on it in two languages (Egyptian and Greek), using three scripts (hieroglyphic, demotic and Greek). The Rosetta Stone was written in all three scripts so that the priests, government officials and rulers of Egypt could read what it said. Many people worked on deciphering hieroglyphs over several hundred years.
Rosseta Stone became key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs
looking at how these signs were used in coptic he was able to work out what they stood for. Then he began tracing these demotic signs back to hieroglyphic signs. By working out what some hieroglyphs stood for, he could make educated guesses about what the other hieroglyphs stood for.
After many years of studying the Rosetta Stone and other examples of ancient Egyptian writing, Jean-Francois Champollion deciphered hieroglyphs in 1822. Champollion could read both Greek and coptic. He was able to figure out what the seven demotic signs in coptic were. By

Book Bi-scriptual by studio Eps51
As a result of globalization and increased interaction across countries and cultures, multilingualism is becoming increasingly important all around the world. Script, as the most important conveyor of information, is at the center of this development. Designers are more and more faced with the challenging task to create advertising posters, signage systems, books or lettering, for example, that not only combine different languages but two or even more writing systems with varying visual precepts and habits.

[ 19 ]
At first, important general aspects are documented and discussed such das sociocultural premises, technical requirements as well as practical considerations. All eight in-depth presented writing systems are then described by specialists in the field and illustrated by work examples from international designers and studios. “Bi-Scriptual” provides a thorough overview of the various possibilities for the booming field of multiscript design to foster international communication.

Example on how language has a repercusion on society’s behavior.
The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) was created in Madrid in 1713, on the initiative of Juan Manuel Fernandez Pacheco y Zuniga (1650-1725), the eighth Marquis of Villena, who was also its first director. The RAE, whose main precedent and model was the French Academy founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635, set itself the essential objective from its creation of a dictionary of the Spanish language, “the most copious one that could be made”. This purpose became a reality with the publication of the Dictionary of Authorities, edited in six volumes between 1726 and 1739, and

Orthography appeared in 1741 and in 1771 the first edition of the Grammar was published. Throughout its three hundred years of history, a total of thirty-one directors have governed the destinies of the RAE. Installed in its current academic headquarters in Madrid’s Calle de Felipe IV since 1894, the institution has gradually adapted its functions to the demands and needs of the society of

The current statutes, approved in 1993, establish as a fundamental objective of the Academy “to ensure that the Spanish language, in its continuous adaptation to the needs of the speakers, does not break its essential unity”. There is currently an important debate on freedom of expression and the various forms of censorship that are still in force in today’s society.
What is the law on free speech?
What is the law on hate speech?
Under Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998, “everyone has the right to freedom of expression” in the UK. But the law states that this freedom “may be subject to formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society”.
A number of different UK laws outlaw hate speech. Among them is Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986 (POA), which makes it an offence for a person to use “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, another person harassment, alarm or distress”. This law has been revised over the years to include language that is deemed to incite “racial and religious hatred”, as well as “hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation” and language that “encourages terrorism”.

Why is the debate so controversial? Criminalising the incitement of violence or threats “can be seen to be a justifiable limit on freedom of expression”, says campaign group Liberty. What is controversial “is the criminalisation of language (or behaviour) which may be unpleasant, may cause offence but which is not inciting violence, criminality etc”, the organisation adds.

Paradox Of Tolerance
Ley Mordaza / Gag law
This law has punished rappers for their use of language that foster hatred when they’re words taken out of context.
The paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Karl Popper described it as the seemingly paradoxical idea that, “In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance.” Popper took pains to make clear that he did not mean the expression of intolerant words and ideas, but in fact the opposite: They who must not be tolerated are those who wish to silence discussion and debate.
Fines for protesting Under the new law, anyone who organizes or takes part in an “unauthorized protest” could be fined between €30,000 and €600,000 if the protest takes part near institutions such as the Spanish parliament. Social Media Activism Using Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to call on people to protest will be fined under the new law, an attempt to put paid to the spontaneous protests that have proved very powerful in building the indignado movement.

Online Hate Speech At this time the subject of social networks and technology arises, as a consequence it is decided to investigate more about the impact that technology has on language and the involvement it has in the discourse of hate.

A new report addressing the nature, scale and impact of online abuse has been launched by Cardiff University in collaboration with leading law firm Mishcon de Reya. Entitled Hatred Behind the Screens, the report calls for tougher internet regulation and a statutory duty of care – enforced by an independent regulator – to make big tech companies take more responsibility for the safety of their users and for dealing with harm caused by content or activity on their services.

“ Many women and people from minority groups in the public eye receive anonymous hate speech for daring to have an online presence. We are seeing this deter people from entering or continuing in public life, often those from groups in need of greater representation. ”
The report explains how online hate speech has risen over the past two years and how certain ‘trigger’ events such as terror attacks, general elections and the Brexit referendum can lead to spikes in the volume of online hate speech. It describes how social media and other “intermediary” platforms enable the spread of hate speech while being largely shielded from legal liability seeing as they are viewed as “platforms not publishers”.The report was co-authored by Professor Matthew Williams, from the School of Social Sciences, whose work with HateLab has continued to provide vital information about online abuse.

Fahrenheit 451’s arguments in favour of literature and critical thinking and against censorship and blind conformity have continued to resonate since the book’s first appearance.
Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel, often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English novelist George Orwell. Thematically, Nineteen Eighty-Four centres on the consequences of government over-reach, totalitarianism, and repressive regimentation of all persons and behaviours within society.

Utopia and dystopia are genres of speculative fiction that explore social and political structures. Utopian fiction portrays a setting that agrees with the author’s ethos, having various attributes of another reality intended to appeal to readers.
Both utopias and dystopias are commonly found in science fiction and other speculative-fiction genres, and arguably are by definition a type of speculative fiction.
Dystopian fiction (sometimes combined with but distinct from apocalyptic literature) offers the opposite: the portrayal of a setting that completely disagrees with the author’s ethos.[1] Many[quantify] novels combine both, often as a metaphor for the different directions humanity can take, depending on its choices, ending up with one of two possible futures.

The internet that once seemed open and free has been transformed into a dystopia of double meanings and commercial and political dealings. Ingrained psychological dependencies have developed out of brightly blinking ‘user friendly’ experiences, monitored by businesses and government agencies. These dark ‘post 2.0’ conditions – and the economic, social and political superstructures that help create and enforce them – motivate the work of Metahaven, a research-focused design studio founded by Amsterdam-based Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden. Metahaven are difficult to define – knowingly and obstinately so – not simply as a collective, whose ranks have expanded and changed

The studio can certainly be understood using the conventional terms that define success in the international design community: institutional affiliations, awards and exhibitions.3 Echoing Rock and Lupton’s can-do optimism, they could be considered ‘auteur-producers’: tenacious visionaries who work across multiple platforms to create a broad variety of functional objects, as well as a prolific amount of insistent, manifesto-like critical and self-referential writing.

English Translation An approach by an author named Vigoski, and it is the relationship between language and thought. What these people proposed above all was the idea that they cannot be separated, that thanks to language human beings develop thought and in developing thought we need a fundamental tool which is language, although this does not have to be reduced to oral language. There is also a link with technological development and what would be and neoliberalism, at an economic and socio-political level, because there is a linguist and philosopher author called Noam Chomsky who speaks about this. There is an article on the strategies of

manipulation of the media, called A Critique of Power. Although the author does not speak concretely about language and technology, he speaks about the media. There is an evident fact that technologies, especially when we talk about language, have had a very strong space as a space for communication. There are different strategies that serve to reduce the expressive capacity of language. When you reduce the amount of vocabulary of the population, automatically, its capacity of thought diminishes and in turn its critical capacity. For this reason, we have to talk about how new technologies are put at the service, at a communicative level, of the control of the population, controlled by the

great economic powers. For this reason, their relationship with the neoliberal system. The lie, at a political level is normally used, in fact we are seeing it in the political wake of before and now. This means that it stimulates the public to be complacent with mediocrity and lies. The leader of a party comes out with information that most of the criminals and sexual abusers are immigrants, and then when the program ends a journalist asks him about the source of this information and he answers: I have collected it from a source of his media, if it is not true it is his problem and his fault, not mine. So, as a political leader, how can you use data that you are not sure about? That

generates thought, which I have already told you. Those words generate and shape our thinking. What is the cause of the existence of an increasingly extreme political and ideological current? Does it have anything to do with technology and language? You said something that I want to connect with something you said before about the question of whether people have suddenly become radicalised or whether it was something that was already there but was more hidden, I think there was probably already something incipient, but as we have talked about, language affects our thinking

and by saying this, a very large collective of people, united with a reality of crisis, when things are going well, we don’t have problems, but when things are going badly we all seek to demonise and look for the cause. If you tell me that it is the immigrants how the right wing is doing in politics in many countries or if you tell them that it is the European Union how it happened in Great Britain. This idea that immigrants are taking away work and taking away everything. Of course, that which is latent in me, when they formulate it and argue it to me, ends up generating a thought in me that is reinforced and I end up saying it, and as I say it my thought is reinforced. By saying that idea more, more people get it.
I have always said one thing that what we say sometimes when we are students that I know, but I don’t know how to explain it is not real. What we know and what we think, what we know, we can explain more or less, and what we can explain is what ends up forming an idea.

Hence the great role that social networks and television programs have today. A sense of the uncanny pervades much of Metahaven’s work, which draws on the heavily mediated visual detritus that defines the corporate and government worlds. Microsoft’s pre-installed font package, dropshadow effects, garish colours, pirated logos and other dated graphic elements are the marks that make the work feel vaguely familiar yet perfectly pitched.

For the treatment of typography, the idea arose to take a picture with the mobile phone of a photograph shown on a computer screen. Then that photo would be edited so that the colors were vivid and the forms more organic and abstract, similar to the psychedelic style of the 60s.
Photograph of a yellow rose through a tracing paper filter used to experiment with the method chosen for the typographic treatment.

Unesco’s Memory of the World Programme Memory of Mankind
Svalvar Global Seeds Vault Project Gutenberg
Memory of Mankind (MOM) is a preservation project funded in 2012 by Martin Kunze. The main goal is to preserve the knowledge about our present civilization from oblivion and collective amnesia. Information is printed on ceramic tablets, then stored in the salt mine of Hallstatt, Austria. More than a simple archive project, it aims to create the "Time capsule of our era",[1] letting people participate by allowing them to submit texts and images. In contrast to national archives, content for MOM is collected by anyone who takes part. It is a collective, "bottom-up" told history.
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norwegian: Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, near Longyearbyen, in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago, approximately 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) from the North Pole.[5] Conservationist Cary Fowler, in association with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR),[6] started the vault to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds that are duplicate samples, or "spare" copies, of seeds held in gene banks worldwide. The seed vault is an attempt to ensure against the loss of seeds in other genebanks during large-scale regional or global crises.

New Changes for last assessment
-Simplify the concept -Make it more realistic -Simplify art direction. -Change the academy of language with an organisation more linked to a government. -Create an art direction more corporate -The project now would focus on the creation of a vigilante movement against the governmental organisation which tries to encourage hate speech. This would be a way to transmit better the message and be less confusing since the copy could be very convincing.

Final Proposal due to Covid
Freedom of expression is something we consider essential for a free and advanced society, yet this discourse is currently used as a double-edged sword to argue the use of hate speech and intolerance. In the new proposal, therefore, I have decided to focus on showing why we cannot tolerate this type of discourse that infringes on the freedoms of other people, usually minority groups. Since freedom of expression is something that we have all accepted as good, it is essential for this new proposal to show the bad side, hate speech, more clearly.
digital & final

[ 95 ]
The new idea for the major project is to focus on the digital part of the project I had previously, the animation to deal with the theme Free Speech VS Hate Speech (to show why we cannot tolerate discourse that discriminates). Therefore, I think it would fit better with the first proposed option of a 10-minute narrative video. This animation would show part of the government’s campaign and its office of free speech by turning the viewer into part of a vigilante movement to uncover what lies these fake and hate speech statements hide. I would create an official website for this office with its campaign, posters, ads, as well as use animated
proposal
typographic elements to support the video’s narrative. I would show how this office’s social media shield works to prohibit censorship of hate messages. The government branding would consist of a mix of more serious, corporate and bold but modern with others elements that are aesthetically more beautiful and positive to try to disguise what they really are and mean. Through the viewer’s inquiry into the web, the layers beneath can be discovered that reveal what they hide. I would also develop a typography that allows its animation which would also show this same idea of the falsehood.

[ 96 ]
Ideas Summary
-Fictitious website thread to show all the elements cohesive and with a coherent narrative. -Animate elements as a replacement for the interactivity of the previous project idea. -Include the different assets within the web so that a more cinematic and credible story is created that does not take the viewer out of the story. -Messages that are convincing but show, in a much less subtle way, the negative side so that the message is less confusing.

ASSETS PLAN -Website: design with illustrator but build it in after effects. -Animation: create the website entirely with animation software (after effects & cinema4d) and give meaning to the project through the animation of the typography. -Manifesto: adapt it to the website and create a manifesto much more animated and adapted to the new format of the project, since the project has turned into a purely animated proposal.
ideas
-Campaign: bring the project closer to reality through the creation of a series of element that can be easily recognised by the audience and placed in the environment. Important the use of copywriting. -Social Media: show the control and the real purpose of the office through methods that freed hate speech.

In order to create a typographic animation that criticise hate speech I decided to work on a typeface that is sharp and aggressive. However, I decide to use the animation software to alter the typography and animate it without needing to create one. In this way I can spend more time on the narrative and still sending the same message.

Initially, the idea was to design the manifesto in the form of an editorial as well as to create a small rotating 3D animation to show it on the website. However, when the project was completely converted into an animation, the original format didn’t make as much sense, so I decided to transform it completely into an animation to make it the main element.
