183 State Street
Mixed-Income Development
This mixed-use development was an exercise in making the most of a limited budget to create mixed-income housing, ground retail, and office space near New Haven’s railways The Building’s morphological likeness to the Knights of Columbus Parking Tower (red brick, see map) is a vernacular acknowledgement that tells New Haveners we can still make heroic buildings like we used to—they will just serve the people this time around, instead of only the automobile. The success of 360 State Street across from this site implies greatdemand for housing, retail, and ofice space in this neighborhood
A Proforma estimate calculated that the building will generate 13.4% return on investment.
Roof Fully Occupiable & Accessible to All Residents
Parameters controlled: # of floors; # of 1, 2, 3 bedroom units; retail area; courtyards; staff; construction time. Balconies: Mid-income residents Schedules A, B, C Apartment rent prices vary by square footage, views, etc. Adjusted in Schedules

Chair for standing desk allows alternating position without costly table Free-pivot seat builds lower back muscles to prevent herniated disks Built to maintain ideal pelvic tilt angle of 135° Height adjustable footrest accommodates adults 5’-0” to 6’-4”
The shape of the spine is dependent on the two boundary conditions: 1) the tilt of the skull, and 2) the pivot of the pelvis.

This project is an analysis of Villa Shodhan by LeCorbusier through model-making. The project dissects and reconstructs the villa to understand its concept, massing, tectonics, program, interior/exterior environment, and makes a statement about how LeCorbusier changed or augmented his theory on what the 5 points of modernism should look like when built.

Mirrored Modernism
The 1956 Villa Shodhan is an overturn of Le Corbusier’s original 5 points of modernism as exemplified in Savoye in 1929. • Perspectives show that Shodhan’s roof is Savoye’s floor datum; • Shodhan is grounded and desintegrates upwards, while Savoye floats its mass above the landscape. • Pilottis obtain rectangular directionality from the original circular rod.
