SHANGHAI URBAN FARMING

MASTERS DEGREE PROJECT 2015

01

Shanghai is a city of strong economic development that grows extremely quickly. This development attracts lots of people from the rural regions and increases urban population of the city. Those new inhabitants often prefer to give up working in agriculture and try their chances in big cities. As a result, high densification of Shanghai, more pollution and decrease of life quality. A residential area, “Bund Garden” is a particular example of district that suffers from this densification. It is situated not so far from the city center along the river Huangpu, in the area that is called South Bund. This district is in advanced stage of development with big commercial and touristic projects.

Alternative

The Bund Garden is a residential district of about 5.000 inhabitants that bought their apartments with an open view to the river

New offices buildings are under construction just in front of Bund Garden

New buildings now form the first line of Huangpu river banks. Bund Garden goes to the background. The perk that the residential area had until now is lost.

Why not proposing an alternative to this development devaluing the residential area rather than to take the opportunity to bring new perks for the inhabitants?

Shanghai’s traditional blocks are usually not accessible for nonresidents. That is the case of Bund Garden. The challenge of the project is to bring more attractiveness to the estate, and to pay extra care in how the public vs private limits are being considered. That is why a mixed programme based on urban agriculture is proposed. Modern, hydroponic, family gardens, sport activities, multi level terraces, will be some of the facilities intended for the residents of Bund Garden. Hotel of urban agri tourism, eco-restaurant and market where one can buy hydroponic vegetables and fruits will emphasize the new “suspended gardens” character. And finally, large pedestrian area will cover the highway and allow access to the embankment. All these elements are new perks that will improve quality of life.

The volume of the complex is pushed out towards the border of the gated community. This allows for an aerated court and creates a frame around the complex with facilities open to public. Playing with this mixed program, combining various heights and depths allows to create a smart integration of a gated community into urban tissue while keeping the privacy of its inhabitants.

Plan of the so-called «garden level». On this level, inhabitants of the gated community have access to the interior garden, facilities and farms as well as green base of the complex.

Overview of the gated community «Bund garden» with its new infrastructures and urban farming facilities.

Terraced gardens mixed with urban farms create a real oasis in the city center. That allows to rework the notion of «garden» that exists already in «Bund Garden»

The multilevel urban foundation is a real exchange hub between inhabitants and strangers of the community. The pedestrian flows are separated with those of cars, motos and bicycles.

The urban stroll down to the river reestablishes the link with the water that was lost because of the urbanisation of the Huangpu river banks.

KARLSRUHE RAILWAY STATION DISTRICT «LE BONBON», A NEW TASTE FOR THE RAILWAY STATION STUDENT PROJECT, 2015

02

Le Bonbon, a new taste for the railway station After an intensive workshop in Karlsruhe, it became obvious that the railway station of the city and its environment lack a positive identity. But being one of the entering points to the city and situated on the crossing of four important areas (rural housing, cultural activities, urban housing and forest), the railway station could become a second center, additional to the historical city center of Karlsruhe.

I am proposing to create a new inviting “packing” by offering working areas, easy access across the railways, and also by turning the highway into an urban road with limited speed, densification of the railway station’s “backstage” that lacks of attractiveness. But as a candy, there is not only packing but also the content. Area between railways will be occupied by new offices for startups companies. It will improve the image of the area and will give to it an innovative character. A little bit farther of the railway station will appear a new district with commercial center, school, sport activities and mixed residential areas with different typology. Thus, railway district will become not only the link between two part of the city cut by railways, but also will give to it a new attractiveness and new identity. exte

The competition, launched in 2013, was about designing a “pavilion of culture” in the vicinity of Basel theater. Investigations on site inspired me to find a way to recall the nearby sculptures from J.Tinguely, hence the usage of metallic elements. The glass cube around is designed to protect the temporary exhibits from the weather, while still allowing visitors to always keep in mind their location: they are in the center of a living city and life keeps revolving around as they stare at the exhibits. Tourist information will be given inside, with higher focus on art and architecture which made Basel a famous city for art lovers.

Model of the Puppet Theater with Museum in Sergiev-Posad

PUPPET THEATER WITH MUSEUM MASTERS DEGREE PROJECT, 2010

04

Sergiev Posad is a Russian historical city famous for its puppets and toys. The existing puppet museum of the city is too small and displays only a small part of the collection. It doesn’t allow to caste the light on the craftsman heritage. The location of the project is close to the monastery (“lavra”) of Sergiev-Posad, i.e in the touristic center of the city. From one side, it allows to create a new attractiveness. On the other side, it creates a challenge: respect the traditional atmosphere. In order to respond to this challenge, the volume will be softly added to the landscape but will nevertheless have a distinguishable shape. This one consists of two main volumes of theater and museum connected by a large illuminated lobby with a view on the lavra.

HOUSE FOR A CELEBRITY CONTEST , 2008

05

Together with a team of young architects, I took part in a competition to suggest possible house for various famous people. In 2008, Hugo Chavez was then President of Venezuela, and his strong character was an invitation for us to draw such a house. The house is meant to be a symbol of political activity and famous mediatic image of Chavez: the raised fist.

The interior is designed to give space to Chavez hobby: painting. A painting workshop and an art gallery are situated at the very entrance of the house, in its main volume elevated over the ocean. In addition and for security reason, an elevator shaft is connecting the house to a bunker encarved in the mountain.

06

«REFLET» : REDESIGN OF A PUBLIC SQUARE OF SOULTZ CONTEST , 2010 The public square has been design to reflect the atmosphere of the cathedral, the dominating building around. It offers a pedestrian path with benches and swings, an amphitheater from where the daily life unfolds under the observer’s eye; and last but not least, the cathedral stained glass is wildly ‘spread’ over the whole square thanks to usage of colored glass.

I have been awarded, as part of a 4-student team, the diploma for the contest organized by the Embassy of France in Russia and the Embassy of Russia in France, as part of the Russia/France year in 2010. The topic was to redesign the public square in the city of Soultz, which has a close history with Russian literature as it was the native town of the defeater in duel of Alexander Pushkin.

The mineralogical museum in Strasbourg is in strong need of an extension. Despite the fact that the museum is located in the center of the city, there is fortunately empty space just next to museum that allows for an extension. The new module will host facilities mainly open to visitors but also to scientists. That is why it is important to separate people flows: scientists and visitors entrances are separated. Entering by lobby in the new model, visitors have access to the mediatheque, expositions halls and cafe on the first floor. Separating flows on the first élévation 1-11floor, 1/200 I keep the possibility of exchange on the second. The big exhibition hall and studios of the second floor can be accessed from two sides: scientific and visitors. The amphitheater is located on the third floor. The other challenge of the project is to find an intelligent integration of the new structure with existing. Inspired by rhythm of classic facades of the museum, I propose a new modern version. 1

08 COMMERCIAL CENTER ATAC REALISED PROJECT 2011

The Atac shopping mall in Orekhovo-Zuevo, in the suburbs of Moscow, is a building with a total area of 2.800m2. It hosts a supermarket on the ground floor, and small boutiques on the 1st floor. My participation in this project started in the very beginning when only an irregular-shaped building was set, following the ground topography. Developing plans, cuts, volumes, I worked a lot with different stakeholders of the construction process.

Facades and 3d visualisation of the building

Lots of economical constraints, regulations and customer’s (Auchan Russia) standarts were taken in account. Brand’s colours(red and green), facade materials (sandwiches panels), interior design requests (suspended ceilings, etc.) were respected.

Photos taken after commissioning of the building in 2012

The supermarket was opened for customers in 2012 after an inspection of conformity towards the national rules and norms, such as fire safety, access for physically challenged people, etc.

Longitudinal cut of the conference room

Working on this project was an opportunity for me to familiarize with construction documents and detailed design.

CONFERENCE ROOM IN MOSCOW REALISED PROJECT , 2010

09

Agency «Technology of theaters» This project was about renovating the conference room of the ministry of culture of the Russian Federation. I have taken part in the development of the concept and elaborated the project documentation (drawings, details ...etc). The room is meant for collaborators of the ministry: meetings, events, movie displays, etc. My role in the project was more particularly to deal with the interior of the room, from the floor geometry and seating arrangement, providing the best view to any member of the audience, to the smaller details of the room.

Agency “Starteks” The OOO “Starteks” is a construction company in the city of Balashikha. The high price of land in the region of Moscow has lead to the idea to increase the usable area of their current headquarters. This was reached while taking into consideration the solidity of its current foundations and of the existing structure upon which is based the extension of 2 floors. Due to the economic situation, the realisation of the extension is Заказчик OОО "Cорел Инвест" currently on hold. г. Балашиха, ГИП Иванов А.А. ГАП Нуякшев Гл.констр. Суровцев

«PLAY ME» CONTEST, 2011

URBAN FURNITURE DESIGN

To design this item of urban architecture, I was inspired by the idea of a house. House where one can find various activities and information. Flexible, multifunctional, this piece of urban furniture is hosting trays of various sizes. The clever arrangement is fulfilling various functions: benches and table to play chess, various seating arrangements for friendly discussions, climbing wall for children. Possibilities are only limited by the imagination of people passing by this public place in Moscow.

The Cafe Aubette, located in the central square of Strasbourg, is one of the most ambitious projects of the artistic avant-garde of the '20s, so much to be defined by the most enthusiastic as the "Sistine Chapel" of modern art.

«L’AUBETTE» REWORKED AXONOMETRY WORKSHOP, 2015

12

The starting point of a workshop led by the famous artist David Diao was “l’Aubette”, avant-garde project of Theo van Doesburg, Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp in Strasbourg. Those architects wanted to put the human being in the middle of the painting, rather than in front of the frame. I am reusing that notion, while keeping the contrast between solid-colored cubes and multicolored cubes, as well as by keeping orthogonality everywhere. This downscaling to an object-sized world bring back the human being to its role of external observer of an artwork.

L-Lamp

OLED LIGHTING CONTEST, 2013

13

O-Lamp Participation to a design competition hosted by LG in 2013. I designed 2 lamps based on OLED lighting panels. In this first design (L-lamp), the idea was to provide readers with a portable lighting which they could fold easily amongst their books. The panels can either stick in our out of the lamp, thus providing a slightly different light atmosphere. The OLED technology stays cool and thus the lamp is perfect to be taken out without having to let it cool down. The second concept (O-lamp) is a modular lighting design based on flexible OLED panel. Circular portions of panels are inserted in the powered railing and are freely rotating. By playing with the panel side (lighting side facing inwards or outwards), and the relative position of both panels, a various range of lighting ambiance can be created. The appliance can be used either as a table lamp or as a wall lighting. This project gave me the opportunity to start using the software “3DSMAX”.

HAND DRAWING Computer tools for architectural design are really important nowadays, but I am convinced that having the ability to execute professional drawing by hand remains a key skill, closely linked to being able to understand and express one’s idea, and represent the emotion and soul of a project, especially in its early phases.
