Design Philosophy
Design aesthetics are born out of insightful narratives , capable of connecting with users on a deep, emotional level. Thorough research of the client, location and users must converge to create a meaningful concept that inspires . Individually formed experiences are unified by traveling through the constructed environment; wherein the design becomes the portal that transcends human imagination . All is possible when each element is designed with intention.

Scandinavian Minimalism
Adjacent to Dulany’s fabulous existing headquarters, it was important that the new auxillary office was created with careful purpose, emphasizing the value of the employees within the building. With consideration of the client’s tastes, as well as the future resale potential, the design takes inspiration from scandinavian aesthetics. The restrained color palette relies on materiality to create an airy, calming, and universal interior. Access to natural daylight and greenery is prioritized in every space, creating sighlines that extend beyond the boundaries of the narrow architecture.
Space Planning
WALL LEGEND
With a desperate need for increased file storage , the accounting department was quickly outgrowing their current office space. Given a limited square footage, the proposed layout provides the maximum amount of usuable space while incorporating a variety of flexible functions. Shared files that were previously stored in private offices are relocated to a central area; allowing access without disruption, and freeing personal offices from towering filing cabinets. File capacity calculations ensured that the proposed layout would support their current needs and future growth. The floor plan feels balanced, open, and accessible while allowing for privacy as needed.

Our detailed user research study was instrumental in defining an informed office layout that caters to the specific needs of the accountants. All employees expressed a need for additional work surfaces for daily activities; such as spreading papers out, reviewing data with a colleage, and to house required technology. A U-shaped configuration with unobstructed clear floor space allows for seamless workflow between tasks. Additionally, access to outlets were meticulously planned so they’ll always have power right where they need it. Individual offices are aligned with the existing windows to ensure every employee has views to nature without glare. Maple framed glass partition walls create the soft feel of an open layout that feels approachable, but allows for privacy as needed.
Flexible Work Lounge
In our questionaire, the accountants emphasized the need for more lounge and breakaway opportunities . This guest chair combines the comfort of lounge seating while supporting flexible work ; whether it’s a colleague, or themselves. Sadly, this element was removed during our value engineering phase due to rising build costs.

The Connoisseur
Taking inspiration from New York sophistication and menswear aesthetics, this private office celebrates a retiree’s devotion to his love of art and craft beer. Iconic modern forms are accented by bold contemporary art in a sleek playfulness meant to spark creativity.
The Design
As a beer cicerone, our client requested for their new office to be fitted with a custom bar to display their vast collection of import beers. The stainless steel bar is fitted with an inky quartzite countertop, which plays perfectly off the NYC lithograph from their collection. Hand-painted wallpaper designs continue this artistic sense, while using materials such as brilliant metals and solid walnut for a more masculine feel. In contrast to the bright private office space, the powder bath takes on a more dramatic, moody aesthetic; making you feel as though you’ve been transported to a swanky New York dive bar

Whiskey Room
This client likes their whiskey like they like their glass- smoked. With an extensive whiskey collection totaling over 100 bottles, our client wanted a design that catered to the act of entertaining; using a sophisticated bottle display as a backdrop. A sleek, blackened iron and glass shelving sits upon high gloss black cabinets for both hidden and display storage. A deep blue paint is applied to the walls for a dramatic contrast to distinguish this moody whiskey room; furthered by the complementing inky blue textiles. A corner banquette dining area is perfect for regular daytime use, or serving h’oeuvres over an intimate cocktail hour.
Tasting Room
In order to create the perfect flow for entertaining, the tasting room and living room are treated as one; allowing for lounge chairs to transition between each room to follow where the conversation is at. Architectural furnishings create interest, centered under a stunning chandelier that repeats the smoked glass element. In contrast to the cool grey and blue tones, wood tones bring warmth back into the space; remeniscent of the amber whiskey.
Tasting Room
Living Room
While the space was inspired by restaurant and hospitality designs, it is still comfortable enough to feel right at home. The deep seated sectional is the perfect place to curl up; grabbing a blanket from the hidden storage in the clever cocktail table. However, humans aren’t the only ones in this space- our clients wanted to be sure the new design incorporated the needs of their two fur babies as well. After testing numerous layouts and shelf styles, a unique cat wall design dances around the edges of the television. Designed both for aesthetics and accessibility for their less mobile senior cat, the organic arrangement is mirrored in the coat hooks by the entry. The playful energy, bold contrasting elements, and sleek smokey glass are sure to spark guests’ interest, while finding comfort in staying for another round.

The Forgotten History of a Segregated America
The Color of Law, Richard Rothstein
Segregated Housing Home Ownership
From segregated units to racial zoning ordinances, federal & local governments reinforced existing segregation while placing more rigid structure on integrated communities.
Exclusionary practices denied insured mortgages for people of color, forcing them inflated interest rates on homes over the fair market value.
A Fractured Community
Suppressed Incomes
Forced into the least skilled jobs, Black Americans recieved lower wages while faced with higher costs of living; creating smaller disposible incomes & denied the opportunity to accumulate wealth.
Minnesota has been painted as a liberal safe haven, it is home to some of the nation’s widest racial disparities. The city has funded a number of programs to combat these issues, but in refusing to address structural racism as the cause, they will continue to create tools that benefit some while neglecting the majority
The Solution: Designing for Community
Building Program
To better serve individuals at risk, we must form a new type of resource with a program that is intrinsically tied to the community it serves. Focusing on the hardships experienced in Minneapolis, the proposed project will center on community engagement with special consideration for career and financial growth to support black achievement. It is operated under non-profit organizations, given space within the building to closely manage operations. Lastly, supportive housing units work to repair past injustices; beginning to reclaim a piece of the city they were once pushed out of.
Supportive Housing
Level 1-3
Community-Driven
Developing the project so close to the community forms a tight relationship where top down enablers and bottom up actors are both contributing to the program. Our users, named Equity Designers, take a lead role creating change; strengthening the project by sharing their lived experiences on the inequities being addressed. Local non-profits then support these efforts by providing the resources needed to succeed while advocating with local governments to advance further.
Grounds for Equity
Centered on healing , the new community resource aims to provide tools to establish racially equitable systems of opportunity based on the needs and abilities of its users. It is a physical embodiment of its dedication to free agency ; using empathy, community and dynamic support. Through the strength of many, equity designers are empowered to actively dismantle oppressive power structures , allowing the user to restore
Social Convening
Key Concepts
Conceptual Void Model Making
Curving elements are furthered through a central void form, carving concentric circles to create a cradling structure that embraces and protects its users . Placing these forms in the center of the building allows for visual connection between each functional floor;
Healing Together
During the most difficult times, Black Americans have been denied the chance to
be vulnerable with their own emotions
Nature is used as a tool for healing while working to improve local environmental conditions . In addition to public garden space, private niches can be accessed on peripheral paths for individual opportunities for sanctuary. Curving walkways gently guide designers through any big emotions they might experience while confronting sensitive topics. Flexible bench seating allows designers to take control over their environment , catering the healing process to their own needs. In this space, ambient acoustic speakers diminish background tones and engulf the user in a place for themselves . Surrounded by sweet floral scents, these niches become an accessible, therapeutic experience for all.

Restoring Power
Career and financial advising offices are designed to form a comfortable atmosphere as individuals confront intimidating topics. Here equity designers may seek advice from experts on topics ranging from college applications, job placement and loan counseling. Within each office is a comfortable arrangement of furnishings designed to embrace the body and ease anxieties. The standard executive desk has been eliminated; instead, fostering an environment where each individual shares the same level of power and control, and every voice is heard equally. Should a difficult subject arise, curtains are available to increase privacy and security within the space. Everything is tied together through a neutral color palette, forming a soothing atmosphere.

Convening for Justice
The heart of the project lives in the social convening balconies, which aims to unify and celebrate diverse voices. Social convening is a verb, it is active and in motion. It is a place for human connection, and an opportunity to invite everyone to the table. Casual interactions become a catalyst for change, giving a platform to the voices we have suppressed for years.

The Story
Analog began a few years ago with the idea that a transformative in reconnecting with the people around you. After a long period of being stuck behind a screen, Meghan was missing the Seeing Meghan struggle, Ben suggested she take an “analog day,” or a day away from screens. The rest was history. After a year of selling treats at the local farmers market,
will focus on quality over quantity while using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

The Concept
A Candid Conversation
Analog Public House encourages a rediscovery of what it is like to truly get lost in conversation, without technology. By removing outside distractions, guests can connect with each other in familiar yet forgotten ways. Honest conversations unfold organically when people join, face-to-face, to feel understood. The interior’s found furnishings create a familiar place that inspires users to be their honest selves: raw, messy and undeniably human. By the end of the night, through shared experiences and new discoveries, individuals will find themselves on the same wavelength
Library Lounge
After passing reception, guests are first invited into the library lounge, an area of discovery and connection. Users are motivated to explore eclectic and thrifted items while interacting with the space as if it were their own. The entire room is wrapped in a rich red that provides a warm, cocooning effect; adding to guest comfort
Table Settings
Distinctive centerpieces carry the focus back to the table, rather than the busyness of their surroundings.
Intimate Dining
Private seating nooks framing a custom wine display offer an intimate solution to the traditional overcrowded pub tables. Bench seating is constructed out of hanging upholstered panels that save space and money without sacrificing aesthetics. Denim and worn leather materials are accented by brass nail heads, creating a variety in texture that feels nostalgic. As you move from the bar to the private dining area, the wine display becomes a connecting bridge of light and sound without an open floor plan. Fitted with an eclectic mix of thrifted chairs, the dining room evolves into a welcoming place where users are comfortable sharing stories over dinner with a new friend.
Good design doesn’t stop at the bathroom. This ADA accessible restroom pays homage to Owner Ben’s love of vintage mechanics with a custom patent wallpaper of analog machines. Feelings of raw honesty are channeled in a reclaimed lumber ceiling that mimics the movement of the analog wave

Reception
The first floor ends full circle with reception. Users may retrieve any technology surrendered at the start of the visit as part of the social dining experiment. Take away items and merchandise can also be found here; providing cherished keepsakes from a night they’ll surely remember.
