children, suffer from depression. Depression varies in severity from mild reaction to decreased light levels in winter, to a severe debilitating loss of the ability to function on a day-to-day basis. What You really Need to Know About Living with Depression analyzes the types of depression and pinpoints the key symptoms of the condition, many of which, including weight loss and sleeplessness, are often not recognized as such. The book then looks in depth at the varied factors that may cause depression and that may trigger a recurrence. Treatments for depression vary widely. For some sufferers, exercise or light therapy may be effective; others respond better to drug therapies; some may find a short period of hospitalization more appropriate; still more find that the so-called talking cures offer the relief they need. All the treatment options are described and evaluated, and their possible side effects indicated. Finally, the book looks at how to live with depression. You will learn how to set a realistic management plan, the role of diet, exercise and sleep and how relaxation therapies may help. Using these techniques and others, you can minimize your chances of suffering from depression again.

Climbing is a favorite hamster activity, and once your furry friend reaches the platform, she can hang out and survey her domain! Making play areas at different levels for your hamster enriches her environment and gives her a variety of spaces to choose from.

1

Figure out how big you want the platform to be by laying out a rectangle of popsicle sticks. Glue these together to make a frame.

2

3

Check to see if the platform feels sturdy. If it needs to be stronger, flip it over and glue pieces at right angles to the existing popsicles on the other side.

How to Choose the Right Dog for You Choosing a dog is like choosing a partner—you need to be sure you can get along, have similar interests, and are both willing to make compromises. If you’re more of a sofa surfer than an exercise junky, you should steer clear of the Irish Setter and the Belgian Sheepdog because these dogs love to run. And, if your home isn’t spacious, you might not have the room for a Saint Bernard or a Great Dane. So how do you choose your canine friend for life? The Dog Selector makes it easy. Expertly written text supplemented with helpful sidebar features, engaging photography, and intriguing facts on 130 of the most common breeds ensures that you’ll find your perfect canine companion. A carefully planned questionnaire at the end of the book directs you to detailed profiles of your top ten breeds, matching your personality and lifestyle to a suitable dog. Whether you need a low-maintenance Labradoodle or a super-smart German Shepherd Dog, you’ll find the right dog in this book.

PATTERNS IN NATURE

SPOTS AND STRIPES

Unlike the patterns we create in technology, architecture, and art, natural patterns are formed spontaneously from the forces that act in the physical world. Very often the same types of pattern and form recur in places that seem to have nothing in common, as when the markings of a zebra mimic the ripples in windblown sand. That’s because, as Patterns in Nature shows, at the most basic level these patterns can often be described using the same mathematical and physical principles: there is a surprising underlying unity in the kaleidoscope of the natural world. Richly illustrated with over three hundred color photographs and anchored by accessible and insightful chapters by esteemed science writer Philip Ball, Patterns in Nature reveals the organization at work in vast and ancient forests, powerful rivers, massing clouds, and coastlines carved out by the sea.

New for 2016

ON THE WING Butterflies (and sometimes their caterpillar precursors) make inventive use of a small palette of pattern elements, such as eyespots, chevrons, stripes, and outlinings of veins. These are rearranged to suit many purposes—for example, warnings to deter predators, camouflage, mimicry, and species recognition.

By exploring similarities such as those between a snail shell and the swirling stars of a galaxy, or the branches of a tree and those of a river network, this spectacular visual tour conveys the wonder, beauty, and richness of natural pattern formation. The natural world is bursting with a myriad of patterns—from decorative animal coats bedecked in spots and stripes to the flashy plumes of birds, from the ripples and waves in a sand dune to the vast network of cracks that make up the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. There is even order in the seeming chaos of a flowing river or massing clouds. But how do these patterns form? What rules or laws shape nature into these familiar forms? The story of nature’s design is one of stunning ingenuity, a collection of basic scientific and mathematical principles that underpin the beautiful array of decoration evident in every section of nature.

PATTERNS IN NATURE

Though at first glance the natural world may appear overwhelming in its diversity and complexity, there are regularities running through it, from the hexagons of a honeycomb to the spirals of a seashell and the branching veins of a leaf. Revealing the order at the foundation of the seemingly chaotic natural world, Patterns in Nature explores not only the math and science but also the beauty and artistry behind nature’s awe-inspiring designs.

MICROSCOPIC HONEYCOMBS OF THE SEA The complex, perforated exoskeletons of radiolarians are like “frozen foams:” they are made by the crystallization of a hard mineral at the junctions between bubblelike vesicles that are temporarily formed as the structure is deposited. It’s no surprise, then, that they observe some of the “rules” of bubble layers, forming a roughly hexagonal arrangement in which the edges join in threes at approximately 120 degrees. These basic principles are elaborated in many different ways in different species. Radiolarians like this (1) are typically about 0.1-0.2 mm wide.

AUSTRALIAN PELICAN Pelecanidae Pelecanus conspicilliatus RANGE: australia and Tasmania HABITAT: shallow marine and inland waters SIZE: 59–71 in (150–180 cm)

The Australian Pelican feeds, roosts, and nests in large flocks. They breed on small islands and may lay their eggs at any time of the year. Two weeks after hatching, the young may climb into the adult’s pouch to feed on regurgitated food.

NORTHERN GANNET Sulidae Sula bassana RANGE: e and W coasts of north atlantic HABITAT: marine offshore SIZE: 35½ in (90 cm)

Renowned for its spectacular plunging dives from heights of up to 100 ft (30 m) with its wings half-folded and its body dropping vertically into the water. Northern Gannets nest in huge colonies and egg-laying takes place on a consistently similar date every year.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN Pelecanidae Pelecanus erythrorhynchos RANGE: north america HABITAT: freshwater lakes and shallow coastal waters SIZE: 50–70 in (127–178 cm)

PERUVIAN BOOBY Sulidae Sula variegata RANGE: coastal Peru and n chile HABITAT: offshore waters SIZE: 29 in (74 cm)

One of the 3 abundant seabirds of the famous guano islands of Peru (together with the Guanay Cormorant and the Chilean Pelican), the Peruvian Booby relies on the shoals of anchovettas in the cold Humboldt Current to sustain its immense local concentrations.

The American White Pelican occurs in flocks at all times. They avoid perching on trees, preferring to rest on the ground, often on islands and sand-spits; they roost near the water’s edge.

BIRDS Edited by Sarah Hoggett

Abbott’s Booby nests only on Christmas Island. The species’ breeding cycle takes 15–18 months, so successful pairs nest once every two years while unsuccessful pairs may breed in successive years or take “rest years.” The juvenile birds’ plumage closely resembles that of the adult males.

Unlike the other pelicans, this species feeds by diving for fish, making spectacular plunges into the water from heights of 10–33 ft (3–10 m) above the surface. As it enters the water, it opens its bill and traps the prey in its expanded pouch.

This large, picturesque, and colorful Amazon parrot is found only in the forests of the island of St Vincent, where it has suffered badly from habitat loss. The adult plumage is variable and virtually no 2 birds are exactly alike, but there are 2 basic color phases: the yellow-brown phase illustrated, and the green phase, which has the upper parts mainly dusky green, the base of the primaries green, and the underwing coverts and undersides of the flight feathers green. As they feed, Spectacled Parrotlets keep up a constant chatter and twitter of soft, finchlike calls, quite unlike the raucous screeches of larger parrots. Males are brighter than females, with blue markings on the wing, rump, lower back, and behind the eye.

Yellow-crowned Amazons are opportunist feeders that gather in small groups in the treetops to forage for a wide variety of seeds, berries, fruits, and flowers. At dusk they return to their habitual roosts, flying with characteristic shallow wing beats below body level, rather like those of a duck.

It is also distinctive in flight, flying low through the forest, skimming the treetops, giving a few shallow flaps followed by a short glide, with its wings held angled slightly downward, its rounded gray-black tail feathers spread, and its head raised. It sometimes calls with a variety of chattering notes and soft whistles. Psittacidae

which to turn into a pupa. The silk cocoon protects from the harmful effects of the sun and from persistent predatory birds that like to investigate the cocoons for food. If they could get inside they would find a very juicy pupa to eat. In a few days this pupa will turn into a magnificent moth. It hatches with tiny floppy wings and pumps them up— under pressure—with their internal blood, called haemolymph, until they inflate to the size shown. It only takes a few minutes. Then the wings dry hard and the moth can fly.

The wings are wide and curved at the tip of the forewings and the pattern gives the impression of the head of a snake with a beady eye. The effect on birds must be that the moth is part of a snake curled up in the undergrowth (as sometimes are), hopefully thus saving the moth from attack. As a result, it is called the 'snake’s head moth' in parts of Asia. The habitat of the moths is tropical and sub-tropical rainforests. For a long time regarded as the largest moth in the world, the Atlas moth—with huge wings—has recently been narrowly exceeded by the Hercules moth Coscinocera hercules, which has huge wings with tails; the Atlas Moth does not. It is still very big and impressive with a large surface area of wing. Females are always larger than the males as they have the big payload of eggs to carry. The Barn Swallow has benefited greatly from the destruction of forest habitats, the construction of buildings, and the provision of utility wires and fences. over much of its nesting range, it attaches its mud nest to the rough walls of barns and other human structures and depends on wires for use as perches. BIRD

for many people, birds are some of the most visible and attractive of all our wildlife – they inspire and delight us, whether seen in the garden or spotted while on vacation. They are also vital indicators of environmental degradation, since they respond quickly to changes around them – diminishing populations of wild birds point to environmental dangers and deteriorating conditions. A healthy population of birds and a high diversity of different bird species are sure signs that conditions are good and that a habitat is in a stable and balanced state. The inherent popularity of birds means they can be flagships for conservation efforts, through which habitats and a myriad of other life forms are protected for the future.

Lavender is known for its ability to relax your body and soul. Seems to me it is the perfect element to work into a kick-back-and-relax cocktail. Strong in scent and not typically used in cocktails, just the right amount of lavender infusion adds the most beautiful floral flavor and scent. The mellow notes of botanicals in gin pair well with lavender to create a lovely combination that is not overwhelming and still allows the lavender to shine through.

Elaborate patterns in bright color schemes are used to make a variety of adornments such as collars and bracelets. Many of the techniques were developed long before the arrival of European glass beads to the area. This bracelet is inspired by beautiful Maasai cuffs, made by stringing tiny glass beads on wire in bold patterns.

1 Thread a needle on a 2 yd (1.8 m) length of beading line. Attach a stop bead, leaving a 6 in. (15 cm) tail. Pick up 4 black seed beads, and slide them down to the stop bead.

3 Pick up 1 black seed bead, and stitch down through the 3rd bead added in step 1. Pull snug and stitch up through the new bead. Repeat to add 2 more black seed beads to the row.

2 Hold the beadwork with the stop bead facing up, and pick up 1 black seed bead. Stitch down through the 4th bead added in the previous step and pull snug to lock the new bead in place. Stitch up through the new bead just added.

4 Flip the beadwork so the working thread exits the bottom. Pick up 1 white seed bead, and stitch down through the last black bead added in the previous row. Stitch up through the new bead. 5 Continue adding beads one at a time, alternating between black and white every 2 rows, for a total of 10 square-stitch rows. Weave through half of the panel to secure the thread and trim.

6 Repeat to make 2 more striped square-stitch panels, then remove the stop beads and secure the tail threads [a]. 7 Attach a stop bead to a new 2 yd (1.8 m) length of beading line, leaving a 6 in. (15 cm) tail. Pick up 1 white seed bead and 3 yellow. Flip with work to begin a new square-stitch panel. 8 In the 2nd row, add 3 red and 1 white seed beads. Complete the pattern in the chart as shown [b], then weave in and trim the thread as before.

17 Stitch through the panel to the edge. Add a white 2-bead fringe to this row, and turn to exit the edge as in step 14. 18 Pick up 3 white seed beads, 1 druk, and 2 white seed beads. Skipping the last seed bead

21 Fill the next section with green seed beads and 1 red, and the final gap with 1 blue followed by all yellow. Pass through the final square-stitch panel to exit the edge. 22 Pick up 21 white seed beads. Stitch back through the 1st 3 beads added and into the square-stitch row. Test the fit of the loop on the druk bead, adding or removing beads as needed to get a snug fit. The loop should just fit over the druk with very little room to spare.

24 Continue filling in the gaps, increasing the secondary color by 1 in each row, adding fringe and turning at the edges as before. Add new thread as needed. 25 In the 6th row, add 3 of the secondary color to the 2 center gaps at the opposite side, to match the chart [f]. Decrease the secondary colors by 1 in each of the following rows. 26 Add a second druk and loop at the edges of row 8, testing the fit as in step 22. 27 Fill the 9th row with all green seed beads, and the final row with all red seed beads. 28 Remove the stop beads and weave in all remaining thread, passing through the loops and druks at least once.

ADJUSTING THE LENGTH: To create bracelets of different lengths, prepare your square-stitch sections, and arrange them on a piece of scrap paper marked with your desired length (minus 3⁄4 in./2 cm for the clasp). Measure the space between panels to determine how many beads you’ll pick up in the first fill. Remember to include the lower 3 beads of the outer panels. VARIATIONS: Chromatic and primary color palettes are what give this bracelet its tribal look. Experiment with different combinations of stripes and color blocking to create other exciting motifs. top-roping safEly Ensure the belayer is able to lock the device properly—a Münter hitch can be locked from any direction and is generally the best choice for direct belays. Indirect belay This is basically the same as the system often used when a lead climber brings up the second. The belayer is tied to the anchors or a central point and the belay device is operated from the harness belay point. Any loading is shared between the belayer and the anchor. For a group top-roping session, this method is less convenient for the belayer.

Step-by-step exercises and practice programs for all stages and standards are accompanied by easy-to-follow illustrations and inspiring photographs.

a pitch, which acts as a pulley above the belayer handling the rope on one side, and the climber attached to the rope on the other. Slingshot top-roping can potentially result in considerable friction if the rope passes over the top of the crag, causing damage to both the rope and the rock that can be avoided. Some crags have bolts just below the top. This sometimes requires the rope to be threaded through two bolts (or a chain and ring connecting them), but often the bolts are linked to a single ring or locking carabiner. Be very careful at the edge of the crag; it is best to wear a harness and be clipped to an anchor before the final approach. If the anchors are set back from the edge, it is necessary to create a central attachment point and then extend this over the crag

edge using extra webbing or rope. Because the belay point is unattended, it is best to use two locking carabiners or a fixed ring (for example, a figure-eight descender attached to the loop with a girth hitch through the smaller ring). The belayer should stand directly underneath the anchor station to avoid being pulled off balance. As the climber embarks on the pitch, the belayer takes in any slack rope as it appears. The rope may be clipped through a few pieces of protection if the route is overhanging or takes a wandering line; these will need to be unclipped as the climber passes them, and then reclipped on the descent for the next climber. This climber has reached the top of the climb and is

gases and pressure

The Climbing Handbook

Understanding pressure The molecules of gases are in free association and can be pushed closer together or remain farther apart depending upon the pressure put on them. Because of this, it is possible to compress thousands of cubic feet of air into a cylinder. The molecules of liquids do not behave in the same way, and it is not possible to squeeze a gallon of water into a pint glass. PRESSURE, VOLUME AND BUOYANCY The relationship between pressure and volume has great importance to divers when it comes to buoyancy. Our own air spaces are fed with air from our regulators at ambient pressure but our wetsuits contain millions of tiny bubbles that get compressed as we go deeper making us feel apparently heavier. As we ascend this gas expands back and we feel lighter again.

It is essential that every diver understands the significance of breathing gases under pressure.

Boyle's Law The first divers working inside large openended bells noticed that as the bell was lowered, the water level inside the bell rose, and it went up most in the first moments of descent. When the bell was brought up, the water level lowered, and the air seemed to

Henry's Law Something else important happens to gases and liquids while under pressure. Liquids tend to absorb gases and take them into solution until they are said to be "saturated" with gas. Your body acts like a liquid. At the surface, it is saturated with gas at 1 atm (1 bar) of atmospheric pressure. The 19th-century American physicist William Henry investigated this phenomenon. Henry’s Law explains that the amount of a gas that will dissolve into a liquid depends upon the pressure put upon it, and the absorption will continue until the liquid is saturated with the gas and can absorb no more. Henry's Law tells the diver that the greater the depth and the higher the pressure, the more gas the body will absorb. Dalton's Law A third important law is Dalton's Law of partial pressure, which was formulated by the English physicist John Dalton in 1801. His law states that each gas in a mixture creates pressure as if the other gases were not present. The total pressure is the sum of the

pressures created by the gases in the mixture. Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. The following pages will explain why this is important for divers.

the science of scuba magically return. It was the 17th-century scientist Robert Boyle who first explained this phenomenon. He formulated the mathematical relationship between gases and pressure. This formula is called Boyle’s Law, and it states that the volume of a given mass of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure put upon it. As divers, we can try this out for ourselves. If we take an open-ended bag or container down to 100 feet (30 m), where the pressure is 4 atmospheres (atm, 4 bars), and fill it a quarter full with air, the air will naturally want to make the bag rise. At 66 feet (20 m) and 3 atm (3 bars), we will see that the bag will be about one third-full of air. At 33 feet (10 m) deep and 2 atm (2 bars), the bag will be half full of air. At the surface, where pressure is 1 atm (1 bar), the bag will be completely full. You will notice that the greatest change occurs between 33 feet (10 m) and the surface.

PLANTS

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CHOOSING AND CARING FOR HOUSEPLANTS Plants are living ornaments that grow and develop; they undergo subtle changes through the seasons, presenting an ever-varying display. A thriving plant is a source of pride to its owner, and it imparts a feeling of well-being to any room. Indoor Plants stresses that you don’t need to be an expert in order to derive pleasure from houseplants, but the more you know about your plants the more you will appreciate them. Here you will learn what it takes to ensure that your plants prosper; the ideal temperature and humidity and light conditions, their natural growth cycle, and whether or not they must have a rest period. Having some knowledge of a plant’s preferences for its growing conditions and the requirements for its maintenance will help it to thrive. Not only can this book help you to keep the plants you already have in good health, it is an invaluable guide to finding new plants that will

To the Edge of the Universe in 50 Short Steps

Finding alien worlds Finding other planets beyond the solar system is a monumental undertaking. Imagine an alien race gazing up at their extra– terrestrial night sky, picking out our Sun as just another faint speck nestled among a litany of others. Could they tell the Earth was here?

023

It would be very difficult for them to spot us. For a start, stars are so much bigger than planets—over a million Earths would fit inside the Sun. If the Sun

RUNNING HEAD

A Step-by-Step Guide to Space and Beyond

appears as nothing more than a speck-like star, the Earth is invisible. We face the same uphill battle when looking for planets around other stars. The problem is compounded by the fact that stars make their own light, whereas planets don’t. Picking out a planet against the incessant glare of a star is almost impossible. So, as a planet ghosts unseen around a star, is there any way to tell that it is there even though you can’t see it directly? There is. Picture a small fly buzzing around a light bulb in a near-circular planet-like orbit. Every time the fly passes between you and the lightbulb it gets in the way, preventing some of the bulb’s light reaching you—you will see the bulb dim slightly. So whilst you can’t see the fly itself, you know that it is there. The same

The exoplanet Kepler

is true of stars: orbiting planets cause stars to “wink” at us by temporarily

blocking some of their light. From these winks, astronomers can tease out a wealth of information about the planet, including whether it might be a suitable abode for life. To start, a bigger planet blocks more starlight. So from the amount the star dims you can easily tell how big the planet is. As Jupiter passes in front of the Sun, an alien race would see our star dim by 1 percent. Earth, on the other hand, would cause only a measly 0.01 percent brightness change. We can go further. If you

and light, and temperatures plummet below freezing. The Earth, however, sits in the solar system’s sweet spot—a region where the temperature is just right to host lifesustaining liquid water. This temperate zone is sometimes referred to as the “Goldilocks zone” referencing the varying temperatures of porridge in the famous fairy tale. So from one simple idea—that planets block starlight—we are able to lift the veil on these alien worlds and picture what they might be like.

The fine tuning problem—why is our universe so well suited to life?

.

Coming Soon

Our universe is a strange and curious place. It is also eerily finely balanced, perhaps too finely. It is almost as if someone deliberately set our universe up in way that meant it was capable of supporting life. Over the last century scientists have come to realize that our cosmos teeters on the very brink of nothingness.

024

Imagine that our universe had a control panel, where some omnipotent being could play around with the knobs and dials. It turns out that the slightest tweak of any of the settings would have rendered our universe a desolate wasteland with no galaxies, stars, planets, or people. Take, for example, the strength of gravity. Make it stronger and it will crush material into the hearts of stars with a mightier force. The rate at which stars burn through their nuclear fuel would go up and stars would live much

shorter lives. Increase it enough and stars would come and go in the blink of eye, not hang around for billions years to provide a stable environment for life. With some gravity settings stars wouldn’t exist at all. Similar events would unfold if you ratcheted up the strength of the strong nuclear force too. Without stars to forge heavier elements from lighter ones, key chemicals for biology such as carbon, oxygen, and iron would never have formed. You can play a similar game with dark energy—the repulsive force that seems to be pushing our universe apart at an ever quicker pace. If we changed the dial on our control panel to make the strength of dark energy stronger, it would have ripped our universe apart long ago, quelling the natural desire of matter to clump together to form galaxies. In contrast, dial down dark energy and gravity dominates, pulling the universe back in on itself and collapsing it down into
