RICHARD MILLS

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’s MESSAGE IMAGINING THE FUTURE Over the past seven years, Victorian Opera has carved a special place in the public imagination of this state, by virtue of the energy and vision of its Founding Music Director, Richard Gill. His flair for discovery, participation, innovation and art form development will endure and serve as a continuous inspiration for my years ahead as artistic leader. In imagining Victorian Opera’s next chapter, I have drawn from this great city of ours. Melbourne is an exciting and vibrant meeting place for so many cultures and traditions. Melbourne has embraced professional opera since 1881 – it has had moments of glory in the past that set a standard and inspire those of us charged with nurturing its vitality today. Our challenge at Victorian Opera is to make opera which speaks to and for our dynamic and still evolving community. In 2013, we invite you to discover places where the joy of the unexpected, fresh perspectives on the familiar and what is marvellous in art are given new life, new colour and new voice. Our season begins with the perfect school holiday treat, a newly composed traditional pantomime, the world première of Richard Gill’s Sleeping Beauty. Our Gala Concert marks the return of great Australian soprano, Lisa Gasteen and star baritone José Carbó celebrating the significant anniversaries of Wagner, Verdi, Britten, Mascagni and more. Nixon in China, one of the most influential pieces from the second half of the 20th century, is a journey of discovery from West to East; Sunday in the Park with George, arguably Sondheim’s greatest work, explores the essence of artistic creation from the perspectives of artists, past and present: and then in a collaboration with Leigh Warren & Dancers, we present Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires, a tango opera embodying the spirit and the fire of the tango. In 2013, the company will continue its tradition of commissioning and presenting new Australian work with not only the pantomime, but Norman Lindsay’s wonderful tale for children, The Magic Pudding – the opera by Calvin Bowman and Anna Goldsworthy. Our commitment to young opera enthusiasts will also be continued in our schools’ performances of Puss in Boots by the wonderful Spanish composer Xavier Montsalvatge and our Weekend Arias workshops. Appearing throughout 2013 will be our emerging talent, nurtured by the company through its unique association with the University of Melbourne and stepping into the spotlight for our cabaret style Rush Hour. Our orchestral support for this exciting season will be provided by our esteemed performance partners, Orchestra Victoria. This is a season with something for everyone. Join us on the journey.

In 1971, U.S. President Richard Nixon stunned the world when he revealed he would visit China. It was an historic turning point in AmericanChinese relations after twenty five years of no contact, trade or diplomatic recognition. The following year, Richard Nixon and his wife Pat began a week-long visit to China, accompanied by over 100 journalists. And with them, the gaze of the world followed. Fifteen years later, composer John Adams wrote Nixon in China inspired by ‘the week that changed the world’. His heroic opera, with its powerful music and text, centres as much on the personal journeys of individual characters as on the grand historical narrative. Recently Variety Magazine called Nixon in China, ‘a masterpiece’. In 2013, Victorian Opera re-imagines this compelling work bringing an all-Australian perspective to this grand American opera. These performances of Nixon in China by John Adams with libretto by Alice Goodman are given by permission of Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd, exclusive agents for Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd of London.

‘Before being an artistic expression...tango was a certain attitude, a way of life.’ Horacio Ferrer, Poet Towards the end of the 19th century, near the port suburbs of Buenos Aires, tango was born. Here working class migrants from Europe found a new expression to the tune of the bandoneón, as this fiery dance came to life. Maria de Buenos Aires is a tango opera with music by the greatest master of tango, Astor Piazzolla with an evocative libretto by poet Horacio Ferrer. An intoxicating mixture of dance and song, it tells the story of Maria, a mythical girl from the slums who falls into the rhythm of the city’s underworld. VICTORIAN OPERA

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE If you are new to purchasing a subscription to Victorian Opera, here is some useful information to help you understand the booking process.

1. Your details. In order to ensure you receive the best service possible as a Victorian Opera subscriber you will need to supply your personal contact details, and the contact details of fellow subscribers if you wish them to receive important season information. 2. Your seat. What you need to decide now is where you would like to sit in the theatre? This will determine what seating reserve you need to select and how much your subscription will cost. A premium ticket is often located in the centre of the stalls (first level), and gives you the best visibility between the stage and the opera surtitles and often the best acoustic experience. It is also the most expensive. With an A Reserve ticket you can sometimes get closer to the stage. This is often the most popular ticket. Choosing a B or C Reserve ticket is best if you are looking to spend less however your seating will generally be located at the back of the stalls or towards the sides. Circle seating (second level) is also available in all our major venues, but may not be available across all reserves. 3. Your Package. Now that you’ve chosen the type of seating you want, you can then choose your Opera Package. You can start from just a Three Opera Package or you can choose more. In order to make sure that you don’t miss out on the hottest tickets in our 2013 season, we have included Nixon in China, Sunday in the Park with George and Maria de Buenos Aires in every package, except the Family Package. 4. Your Dates. Once you’ve chosen your package and reserve, you’ll need to select your dates. You can either choose mid week or weekend performances. There are also a range of different performance times available to suit you and your guests. 5. Your Payment. There are a number of different payment options available. Please refer to the booking form to find an option that suits you. If you are a Senior, Concession or VOyage subscriber, make sure you include a copy of proof of eligibility for each subscriber. You can also choose a split payment option. 6. Return your completed form to Victorian Opera Subscriptions, P.O. Box 7585 St Kilda Road VIC 8004. As a subscriber you will be automatically signed up to receive further information on Victorian Opera’s season, including behind the scenes insights, invitations and exclusive offers.
