Season 2017

Welcome In 2017, Victorian Opera invites you into an operatic storybook coloured with vibrant musical expression, vivid theatricality and the country’s brightest talent. Fables unite our season as we revisit beloved stories, fairy tales and legends from writers such as Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen and William S. Burroughs; tales which reflect the deepest truths of the human experience. We retrace varied rites of passage and journeys to new perspectives. We enter a dark wood pierced by shafts of light offering direction, discovery and revelation. Rarely heard operas from throughout the 20th century recur with Leoš Janácek’s masterpiece Cunning Little Vixen, Respighi’s charming puppet opera The Sleeping Beauty, Copland’s youth opera The Second Hurricane and the Australian premiere of Toch’s fairy tale opera The Princess and the Pea. Meow Meow returns to Victorian Opera for a new production with director Cameron Menzies, Kanen Breen and myself; ’Tis Pity: An Operatic Fantasia on Selling the Skin and the Teeth. Breen and Meow Meow bookend our season in a Malthouse Theatre co-production of Tom Waits’ musical fable The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets. Operatic dreams continue with the cast of La Sonnambula, the third of our Bellini operas in concert. Besides dear friend of Victorian Opera Jessica Pratt returning, we are privileged to have the wonderful Italian basso cantante Paolo Pecchioli make his first Australian appearance with us.

Stuart Maunder and Roger Kirk reunite for our new production of Cunning Little Vixen. The young and incredibly talented Artistic Director of Sydney Chamber Opera Jack Symonds will conduct Jonathan Dove's orchestration of Janácek’s opera in his company debut. We are thrilled to head to Hobart as part of an ongoing commitment to staging opera in Tasmania from 2017 in a new partnership with The Australia Council and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Following its Melbourne season, The Sleeping Beauty will be our inaugural production to travel south. Old stories are retold in new works with Victorian Opera commissions including Gordon Kerry’s The Snow Queen, written specifically for Wodonga. Stefan Cassomenos, Dermot Tutty, and Katie Noonan and Zac Hurren will each present one of Flaubert’s Three Tales in our next foray into live-streaming. Telling new stories and reimagining opera is made possible through the generous support of Creative Victoria. Join us as we remind ourselves of our journey through life; a journey we can celebrate together with the power of opera and storytelling.

’Tis Pity An Operatic Fantasia on Selling the Skin and the Teeth 4 – 8 February Melbourne Recital Centre, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall

An operatic fantasia by Richard Mills, ’Tis Pity reunites the creative forces of international chanteuse Meow Meow and director Cameron Menzies to create a brand new work, following their acclaimed production of The Seven Deadly Sins. Richard Mills composes a flight of fancy on ‘selling the skin and the teeth’. A song cycle on the complexities of sex, pleasure, survival and salvation, trade transactions and razzle dazzle rouge through the ages, from Ishtar to the Internet, the vamp, the saint and the mirror, suckers and succour, preaching and pragmatism. Be drawn into a fantastical history of the concubine, the courtesan, the conqueror, the queen and the sing song girl. With texts ancient and modern, old and original.

The Sleeping Beauty 11 – 18 March Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse

The transformative power of love takes centre stage as a cursed Princess awakens from an eternal sleep in a retelling of Perrault’s classic with fairies, fantasy and a cast of puppets. Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s 1922 reimagining of The Sleeping Beauty is given new life in an unforgettable production. This opera was created specifically for one of Italy’s leading puppetry theatres in the early 20th century. Respighi’s production was a smash-hit and toured the world. The ageless appeal of this charming chamber opera will be reawakened by the theatrical genius of director Nancy Black (Master Peter’s Puppet Show, Four Saints in Three Acts) and production designer Joe Blanck. The Sleeping Beauty will feature an ensemble of exciting operatic talent lending voice to stunningly crafted puppets, as Respighi had intended. This production will travel to Hobart in association with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Dates of the tour to be advised online at victorianopera.com.au

La Sonnambula 5 May Arts Centre Melbourne, Hamer Hall

Glittering star soprano Jessica Pratt continues her close association with Victorian Opera in a concert staging of Bellini’s beloved bel canto opera, La Sonnambula. On the eve of her wedding, Amina sleepwalks into the bedroom of another man. Upon discovering her mistaken infidelity, her fiancé Elvino cancels their wedding before Amina’s innocence is revealed in a joyous happy ending. Pratt (Amina) is reunited with Colombian tenor Carlos E. Bàrcenas (Elvino) following their acclaimed performance in Victorian Opera’s production of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. National treasure Greta Bradman makes her company debut as the meddling innkeeper, Lisa, and in his first Australian appearance, grand Italian basso cantante Paolo Pecchioli joins the cast as ‘the other man’, Count Rodolfo.

Cunning Little Vixen 22 June – 1 July Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse

One of the great operatic masterpieces of the 20th century, Leoš Janácek's Cunning Little Vixen marvels at the beauty of nature and the process of renewal. This juxtaposition of human and animal life set in an idyllic forest follows the story of Vixen Sharpears: her youth, journey to adulthood, motherhood and death. In a new production for Victorian Opera, director Stuart Maunder AM is reunited with Tony Award-winning designer Roger Kirk following 2015’s acclaimed Sweeney Todd. Conductor Jack Symonds makes a welcome company debut and leads Jonathan Dove’s chamber orchestration of Janácek’s unique lyrical opera. Cunning Little Vixen is a profound work of genius and a reflection on the cycle of life.

The Black Rider The Casting of the Magic Bullets 15 September – 8 October Merlyn Theatre, The Coopers Malthouse

Tom Waits and William S. Burroughs’ cult musical fable has become one of the most iconic pieces of avant garde theatre since it premiered in 1990. Finding its roots in German folktale Der Freischütz (also the basis for Weber’s opera), the story follows a file clerk’s desperation to prove his worth by entering a Faustian pact. However, the Devil’s bargain is always a fool’s bargain. An allegory of addiction, the plot mirrors the tragic events of Burroughs’ own life.

Composer Tom Waits

A co-production between Victorian Opera and Malthouse Theatre, The Black Rider stars an enviable line-up of Australia’s most cherished ‘enfants terribles’ Paul Capsis (The Threepenny Opera) alongside Meow Meow and Kanen Breen, who bookend our 2017 Season following ’Tis Pity in February. Matthew Lutton takes the helm as director with musical direction from Victorian Opera’s Head of Music Phoebe Briggs.

The Princess and the Pea A Family Opera

25 March Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse

‘Happily Ever Afters’ continue as Victorian Opera returns to Arts Centre Melbourne for another enchanting fairy tale opera for family audiences. A very fussy Prince is perpetually dissatisfied with the parade of Princesses introduced as potential brides and wonders if he’ll ever meet his true love. One evening, a young Princess arrives at the castle drenched with rain and seeking shelter. The Prince is captivated by her, but she must first prove herself a true Princess. A single pea is hidden beneath a tower of mattresses to test her Royal sensitivities. American-emigrant composer Ernst Toch’s musical rendition of Hans Christian Andersen’s treasured story The Princess and the Pea receives its Australian premiere. This charming family production is sung in German by a cast of opera’s brightest talent. Libby Hill returns to direct, following her productions of Hansel and Gretel, Alice’s Adventures in Operaland and Cinderella. This production will be presented as part of Victorian Opera’s Education Program for 2017, featuring a relaxed performance. The Princess and the Pea will also tour regional Victoria.

The Second Hurricane A Youth Opera 6 – 15 October Horti Hall In a storm-ravaged American town, a group of high school students offer their help to a nearby county before becoming stranded in the wake of a second hurricane. Through trial and tribulation, the teenagers must learn to work together if they’re going to survive. Aaron Copland’s work was originally written for students when it premiered in New York in 1937. Eighty years on, The Second Hurricane makes its Victorian Opera debut as the company’s youth opera for 2017 as part of our Education Program. It will be performed by a cast of singers aged 15 - 25 together with students from Victorian Opera’s Youth Chorus Ensemble (VOYCE). Supported by Victorian Opera Education Syndicate. 16

The opera will be directed by Libby Hill with Angus Grant as musical director. Copland’s youth opera tells an important parable of the reaffirmation of community through surviving the darkness of disaster. The Snow Queen 4 November Wodonga, The Cube, 6:30pm Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of dark magic, the power of friendship and the triumph of good over evil is revisited in a new Australian work by composer Gordon Kerry and writer John Kinsella commissioned by Victorian Opera. Their take on Andersen’s classic will be staged exclusively in Wodonga and will capture the heart of the local community. After Kai is abducted by the Snow Queen, Gerda must begin an arduous quest to save her friend from the Queen’s evil clenches. Her journey is helped and hindered by the mythical creatures she encounters as she seeks to rescue Kai. Supported by Victorian Opera New Work Syndicate and the Victorian Government's Major Victorian Regional Touring Program.

This new Australian production strengthens Victorian Opera’s ties to regional Victoria and again engages local performers across Wodonga, following previous involvement in the company’s regional touring productions Remembrance and The Pied Piper. Three Tales

A Live-Streamed Event 27 October Following Victorian Opera’s first live-streamed event The Darkest Night, the company continues its exploration of the digital sphere with a rare glimpse into the process of developing a new opera. In this unique event, you’re invited into our rehearsal room as highlights of three new Australian works are performed after a week long workshop.
