AVRY - COMMERCIAL CENTRE FRIBOURG, SWITZERLAND KCAP ZURICH - COMPETITION, 2016

Avry, in the Swiss canton of Fribourg, wishes to proceed with the demolishing and rebuilding of the commercial center. An aquatic center, residential district and an intermodal station should also be part of the new neighborhood. As part of a team composed of 3 architects and urbanists from KCAP Zürich, I took part in phases 2 and 3 of the tender evaluation (MEP), that is until selection of the winning team amongst the 9 teams selected after phase 1.

01

I worked on all aspects of the project, with special focus on the masterplan, the residential area and the 3-D realization using VectorWorks, as well as visualization using Photoshop.

URBAN FARMING SHANGHAI, CHINA ENSAS - MASTERS DEGREE PROJECT, 2015

Shanghai is a city of strong economic development that grows extremely quickly. It attracts lots of people from the rural regions and increases urban population. Decreasing cultivated or forest areas results in higher pollution, adding to the loss of quality of life due to higher urban density. A residential area, “Bund Garden, is a particular example of district that suffers from this densification. It is situated not so far from the city center along the river Huangpu, in the area that is called South Bund. This district is in advanced stage of development with big commercial and touristic projects.

On a direct order from the Solothurner architect office ‘Schilt & Partner’, I have developed the plans of a luxury residence for a rich Middle-East customer. Made of 10 bedrooms on 3 stories, a swimming pool, garages, this residence had to offer an external look with a proper blend of regional tradition (Marbella, south of Spain) and oriental details.

LE BONBON, RAILWAY STATION’S NEW TASTE MAIN STATION DISTRICT, KARLSRUHE, GERMANY ENSAS - STUDIES, 2015

After an intense workshop in Karlsruhe, it became obvious that the railway station of the city and its environment lack a positive identity. But being one of the entry points to the city and situated on the crossing of four important areas (rural housing, cultural activities, urban housing and forest), the railway station could become a second center, additional to the historical city center of Karlsruhe.

I suggest to create a new inviting “packaging” by offering working areas, easy access across the railways, and also by turning the highway into an urban road with limited speed, densification of the railway station’s “backstage” that lacks of attractiveness. Area between railways will be occupied by startups offices. It will improve the image of the area and will give to it an innovative character. A little bit farther of the railway station will appear a new district with commercial center, school, sport activities and mixed residential areas with different typologies. Thus, railway district will become not only the link between two parts of the city but also will give to it a new attractiveness and new identity. lp

PAVILION «CULTURAL CUBE» BASEL, SWITZERLAND COMPETITION, 2013

The competition, launched in 2013, was about designing a “pavilion of culture” in the vicinity of Basel theater. Investigations on site inspired me to recall the nearby sculptures from J.Tinguely, by using of metallic elements. The glass cube around is designed to protect the temporary exhibits from the weather, while allowing visitors to always keep in mind their location: they are in the center of a living city and life keeps revolving around as they stare at the exhibits. Tourist information will be given inside, with high focus on art and architecture which made Basel a famous city for art lovers.

PUPPET THEATER WITH MUSEUM SERGIEV POSAD, RUSSIA GUZ - MASTERS DEGREE PROJECT, 2010

Sergiev Posad is a Russian historical city famous for its puppets and toys. The existing puppet museum of the city is too small and displays only a small part of the collection. It doesn’t allow to cast the light on the craftsman heritage.

The location of the project is close to the monastery (“lavra”) of Sergiev-Posad. On one side, it creates a new attractiveness. On the other side, it creates a challenge: respect the traditional atmosphere. In order to respond to this challenge, the volume will be softly added to the landscape but will nevertheless have a distinguishable shape. This one consists of two main volumes connecting the museum and the theater with a large illuminated lobby providing a view on the lavra.

07

HOUSE FOR A CELEBRITY VENEZUELA COMPETITION , 2008 I was part of a young architects team taking part in a competition aiming at designing a house for a selection of famous people. In 2008, Hugo Chavez was then President of Venezuela, and his strong character was an invitation for us to draw him a house, meant to be a symbol of his political activity and his famous mediatic image of Chavez: the raised fist.

The interior was designed to provide space for one of Hugo Chavez hobbies: painting. A painting workshop and an art gallery were provided directly inside the house, which was the only ‘luxury’ that could be afforded in the people’s leader’s residence. In addition and for security reason, an elevator shaft is connecting the house to a secured underground bunker encarved into the mountain.

08

RENOVATION OF A CITY SQUARE SOULTZ, ALSACE, FRANCE COMPETITION, 2010

I have been awarded, as part of a 4-student team, the diploma for the contest organized by the Embassy of France in Russia and the Embassy of Russia in France, as part of the Russia/France year in 2010. The topic was to redesign the public square in the city of Soultz, which has a close history with Russian literature as it was the native town of the defeater in duel of Alexander Pushkin.

09

The public square has been designed to reflect the atmosphere of the cathedral, the dominating building around. It offers a pedestrian path with benches and swings, an amphitheater from where the daily life unfolds under the observer’s eye; and last but not least, the cathedral stained glass is wildly ‘spread’ over the whole square thanks to usage of colored glass.

EXTENSION OF MINERALOGICAL MUSEUM STRASBOURG, ALSACE, FRANCE ENSAS - STUDIES, 2014

The mineralogical museum in Strasbourg is in strong need of an extension. The new module will host facilities mainly open to visitors, but also to scientists. That is why it is important to split people flows: scientists and visitors entrances are separated. Entering through the lobby in the new model, visitors have access to the mediatheque, exhibition halls and cafe on the first floor. Separating flows on the first floor, I keep the possibility of exchanges on the second: the big exhibition hall and studios of the second floor can be accessed by both scientific and visitors. The amphitheater is located on the third floor. The other challenge of the project is to find an intelligent integration of the new structure with the existing one. Inspired by rhythm of classic elevation of the museum, I propose a new modern version.

SHOPPING CENTER ATAC MOSCOW, RUSSIA STARTEKS - REALISED PROJECT, 2011

Pictures taken after opening of the supermarket in 2012 The Atac shopping mall in Orekhovo-Zuevo, in the suburbs of Moscow, is a building with a total area of 2.800m2. It hosts a supermarket on the ground floor, and small boutiques on the 1st floor. My participation in this project started in the very beginning when only an irregular-shaped building was drawn, following the ground topography. Developing plans, cuts, volumes, I worked a lot with different stakeholders of the construction process.

CONFERENCE ROOM MOSCOW, RUSSIA TECHNOLOGY OF THEATERS - REALISED PROJECT, 2010

This project was about renovating the conference room of the ministry of culture of the Russian Federation. I have taken part in the development of the concept and elaborated the project documentation (drawings, details ...etc). The room is meant for collaborators of the ministry: meetings, events, movie displays, etc. My role in the project was more particularly to deal with the interior of the room, from the floor geometry and seating arrangement, providing the best view to any member of the audience, to the smaller details of the room.

URBAN FURNITURE ÂŤPLAY MEÂť MOSCOW, RUSSIA COMPETITION, 2011

To design this item of urban architecture, I was inspired by the concept of a house, where one can find various activities. Flexible, multifunctional, this urban piece of furniture is hosting trays of various sizes. The clever and modular arrangement is fulfilling various functions: benches and table to play chess, various seating arrangements for friendly discussions, climbing wall for children. Possibilities are only limited by the imagination of people passing by.

David Diao, workshop mentor

«L’AUBETTE» REWORKED AXONOMETRY STRASBOURG, ALSACE, FRANCE ENSAS - WORKSHOP, 2015

The starting point was a workshop led by the famous artist David Diao was “l’Aubette”, avant-garde project of Theo van Doesburg, Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp in Strasbourg. Those architects wanted to put the human being in the middle of the painting, rather than in front of the frame. I am reusing that notion, while keeping the contrast between solid-colored cubes and multicolored cubes, as well as by keeping orthogonality everywhere. This downscaling to an object-sized world bring back the human being to its role of external observer of an artwork.

The Cafe Aubette, located in the central square of Strasbourg, is one of the most ambitious projects of the artistic avant-garde of the ‘20s, so much to be defined by the most enthusiastic as the «Sistine Chapel» of modern art.

L-Lamp

OLED LAMP COMPETITION, 2013

16

O-Lamp Design competition from LG on the theme of OLED lighting. The first design (L-lamp), is a portable lighting which can be fold easily amongst books. The panels can either stick in our out of the lamp, thus providing a slightly different atmosphere. The second concept (O-lamp) is modular. OLED panels can slide in the power railing. Playing with orientation and position of panels, a various range of lighting ambiance can be created. This project gave me the opportunity to start using the software “3DSMAX.

Computer tools for architectural design are really important nowadays and they allow to be more precise, faster and more efficient than drawing by hand. That drives the world of today and it is key, for an architect, to be skilled at using those tools. On the other hand, I am convinced that hand drawing is something that allow understanding and expressing the soul of project, especially during its first phases.
