POINT & LINE The purpose of this assignment was to study how our body moves, while performing a physical activity. I decided to focus on the art of dancing, because I’ve always been inspired by the movement and gracefulness of it. In the photos below, I used layering and opacity effects in Photoshop to combine all of the movements of my dance routine into one continuous photo: both front and side view.

Dancing radiates energy from the body and depicts flowing illustrations of beauty, elegance, and variety. Movement creates an awareness of the relationships among the body, mind, and space.


After some thinking, I created my own dance routine that contained movement of both my arms and legs, so the sense of motion would be clearly seen. The many photos taken during my performance were then put into a set of frames in Adobe Photoshop, to create a film strip. From there, I placed trace paper over this print to make up a diagram to see where lines and points of my body intersect. I used three different line weights to show the variation between my arms, legs, and torso (main body structure). I also used circles to show my knee and elbow movements.

FRAME Next I built a wireframe model made from basswood, based on the line drawings previously described. I experimented with the structure of it through study models. I decided to use various thicknesses to show the differences between the three chosen components: body structure, arm, and leg movement.

SURFACE

Study Models

For the surface model, I experimented with different types o f paper t o create various surfaces based on the wireframe basswood model. I then rebuilt the wireframe m odel using w ider p ieces o f basswood for the main structure, thick museum board for the inner levels, and a combination of frosted and clear acrylic f or t he upper and s ide areas. This creates transitioning between translucent and transparent materials. The c lear acrylic i s placed i n the “eating” areas, w here privacy i sn’t important. The frosted acrylic is placed in the “sleeping” areas, where more shade and privacy is needed.

HOUSE OF RITUALS As a continuation of the previous project, we then combined the structural and surface models together to create a “House of Rituals�, in which a person must occupy the space in three different ways: bathing, eating, and sleeping. We started out with a box that had four sides, which could allow for one to be removed to improve functionality and make it more open and interesting. I decided to incorporate a large amount of my wireframe structural model into my design, because it represented movement, which was a key factor in my house. I wanted to focus on the concept of angles and linear forms, both horizontally and vertically, which would be seen as the occupant is drawn into each level of the space.


I experimented with different forms using study models beginning with museum board. I added basswood and frosted acrylic to cover the front facade (left). I used longer pieces of basswood, along with smaller ones for the stairs, and then decided to place the acrylic on the floors, rather than the front (right).




PARALLEL PLANES Location: Art Building Courtyard, San Jose State University For this project, we were to design a path for students to travel on, through and occupy, if needed. We were to include eleven parallel planes, and a base that was low enough so people couldn’t gather underneath. The location of the site is rather busy during peak hours of the day, so it was important to make sure that multiple people could have access to it all at the same time, from all different areas of the courtyard: from the traffic coming from the student union, and the main and side entrances of the Art Building.

This area is not only a gathering spot, but also a place where a large majority of people walk by and through, throughout various times of the day. It is also located next to the bookstore and the student union/ cafeteria. The peak hour that this area sees the most action is around noon to two pm. People use this space as a hangout spot, an area for campus events/organizations, a place to do homework, etc. Even though this is one area as a whole, it’s divided up based on traffic, population, and noise.


IBased on site analysis, the pathway needed to be placed closer to the main entrance of the building, away from the larger amount of traffic and noise coming from the student union (and surrounding areas) located on the south end. The landscape is placed to surround the pathway to create shade and intimacy for people to occupy the space comfortably.

Most people gather near the outside area of the courtyard, while the areas closer to the building itself are used for study areas or a more private, quiet spot to spend time. The walkway’s effiency and functionality as a main focus, and a gathering space is an alternative focus. The larger gathering space is located in the center and on east side away from the building, since that’s where more of the commotion takes place.

Interior Perspective The south end of the parallel plane unit is a moresecluded area, to study, or sit in a more private setting not so close to the louder area of the courtyard. The material chosen for the pathway was a simple grey-ish white stone that would withstand harsh weather and constant use from the ongoing traffic.

HERMITAGE Location: Industrial Studies Building, San Jose State University We were to create a dwelling in which people could occupy a space in three different ways. I wanted to design a private retreat for students to relax and work in a quiet environment. In order to execute this, we started out with a 10’ H x 6’ W cube. While perforating and dimpling the surface, I created the three separate areas of occupation. Since the building surrounding the hermitage was lackluster, I wanted to bring color and life into a rather desolate area to make working more enjoyable.

The hermitage is strategically placed in the corner of the area. The reasoning behind this was to shield it from the heavy foot traffic coming from every direction, (which creates a large amount of noise as well), and the breeze that comes from the multiple doors constantly being opened. The main seating area is placed in front, so it can be the first thing seen when you walk in, while the private areas are tucked away from the main walkways.

North elevation The seating area faces both inward and outward, to create a relationship between public and private space. That way people can sit out in the open and face the door, or sit facing the back wall if they want to be secluded and focus on homework. An area is located at the top of the hermitage for students to incorporate resting into their busy daily routine. This area would receive the most amount of privacy, and would be cozy enough to allow one person to lounge in the space comfortably, without being in direct sight of the passerby. Along with lounging, students could also work on homework, considering the lighting fixtures are incorporated in the ceiling directly above.


surface For the surface version of the model, I used a textured foam board. I used an X-acto knife and carved out the different sections based on measurements from my Sketch Up model. I then hot glued the pieces all together.

laser cutting For the final version of the model, I used illustration board. In order to make the physical model, I built it in Sketch Up and then brought it into 123D Make, in order to generate slices. I then stacked the slices up and used glue to hold them together.

wireframe I purchased a thick, yet malleable wire and bent it into the different parts of the model. I then saudered the pieces together and used a thinner wire for extra support.


PRE-FAB HOME Location: Santa Monica, California For this project, we were to create a pre-fabricated home for clients of our choice, that would fit into a site of 7000 sq. ft. The residential portion of the habitat must be 1000 sq. ft and the office pod attached to the habitat must be 500 sq. ft. Since the homeowners are a young couple, I wanted to create a home with a modern architectural style, incorporating clean, sleek lines and smaller windows to create a sense of privacy. I also wanted to make the exterior look less stark, by adding warm, natural materials to it, such as wood and stone.

The clients for this home are a young couple that lives a busy lifestyle with demanding careers. Angela, 26, is an interior designer and Darren, 29, is a firefighter. They love to adventure and spend time together. They like to entertain guests and have their friends and family over. They enjoy being active, relaxing outside and spending time with their dog, Bailey. The home is placed in Southern California, with close proximity to the city and the beach, so they can take advantage of many different activities.

Site Plan Since the home needed to be built on a 7000 square foot lot, it was necessary to have ample room for Angela and Darren’s dog, Bailey to run around in the backyard. Since the family loves the outdoors, a patio area is attached to the main living space, as well as another patio along side of the master bedroom. This way, they could enjoy some sunshine in the morning as they wake up, and also use the larger patio area for entertaining guests outside during the warm summer months.

The home also features two ways of entry: one leads into the main living area of the house, while the second one leads into Angela’s home office, for clients to use.


The kitchen has access to the back patio, for BBQing and entertaining. The dining room is close to Angela’s office space, so it can double as a conference room in case she needs to have a meeting with multiple people. In addition, the office space can be used as a guest room, with a Murphy bed located on the North wall. There is also a closet located on the South wall of the office for storage.

Since Angela works from home a majority of her time, the office needed to feel welcoming and comfortable. It is located close to the kitchen/living area, so she could easily get bite to eat or something to drink while she’s working. She could easily close off that portion of the house if she needed a private meeting with her client. Since the main living space has warm tones to it, cooler tones were incorporated in the office to differentiate it from the main area. Shades of grey, purple, and white create a feminine and modern feel. She has a sleek rounded desk with enough space for her to draft and draw ideas out for clients. A large screen on the back wall is used for Angela to easily show her designs made on the computer without having to turn the the whole thing around.

The living, dining, and kitchen are all aligned. This way Angela and Darren could still spend time together even if they’re in different rooms. To make the front area cozy, warmer tones, such as red, orange, tan, and copper, were used throughout.

With so much light coming in from all directions, I wanted to tone it down by bringing in a rich color palette to create a sort of rustic feel to the space, which Darren likes. In the center of the space, the dining room has a more modern style with clean lines and a mix of dark and light furniture, which is what Angela likes.
