DRM TOWER 401 N Wabash Ave, Chicago Goal: Design a multi-story office, condominium, and hotel in the heart of Chicago. Approach: DRM Tower is located along the Riverwalk in North Loop Chicago. The design of the ground floor aims to create a 24/7 living plaza with access to retail to enhance the public Riverwalk experience. The mixed use high rise complex is composed of two towers that are uniquely connected by two bridges. The first, and most prominent tower, soars up to 88 floors and serves as a residential condominium and hotel. From the Riverwalk level, visitors can access the observatory deck and 5-star restaurant, which both offer 360 degree views of the city. The second tower is a 30-floor office, serving as a business center beside its residential counterpart. With its luxurious stature, DRM Tower presents itself as a prominent feature of the Chicago skyline. In collaboration with Juan Pazmino & Rachita Ranjit

INFILLING THE VOIDS Rogers Park, Chicago Goal: Develop a long-term strategy for the integration of Syrian refugees into the city of Chicago, IL. Approach: “Infilling the Voids” is a community inclusive project where Syrian refugees are assimilated in the community of Rogers Park, Chicago through a market based economic model. The project aims to rejuvenate the cultural landscape of Clark Street by creating an attractive investment point for the new immigrants. The outcome is to create a cultural hub for tourists, students and visitors while elevating the economy and infrastructure of the Syrian community in Rogers Park.

The program will consist of a two-phase development. Phase 1 (0-5 years) begins with identifying voids in the street fabric and developing a semi-permanent structure that can run throughout the week at selective time slots. In Phase 2 (5+ years) the voids will be converted to permanent structures. As Syrian market vendors create a more steady income and have more experience as sellers, they will be able to construct more permanent markets. 27

BIBLIOTECA BARCELONA Barcelona, Spain Goal: Design a multi-story library that caters to all demograhic persons in the Parc de la Ciutadella neighborhood Approach: Located at the heart of Barcelona’s city center, the Barcelona Library serves as a central axis for the intellectual and commoner alike. Each story within the six story building serves as a space that fosters innovation and educational growth. Rows of shelving divide common areas from private study spaces, creating both open and enclosed spaces. Outside, the wide steps on the ground floor entrance doubles as an outdoor communal space.

KICKAPOO CABINS Kickapoo, Illinois Goal: Design a series of cabin complexes on the Kickapoo State Recreation Center campgrounds with a nearby multi-use community building Approach: My approach to this project was to design a series of cabins along a winding path that follows the steep curvature of the forest topography. Instead of destroying the natural surrounding elements, I designed my cabins to rest on a pier and beam foundation so as to preserve the existing conditions of the site. A larger community house by the lake offers views to the adjacent waters and forests opposite to it.

The cabins offer a small and intimate, but luxious space for visitors to rest while on their journey. In addition to the large facade window, clerestory windows help bring in more natural 45

sunlight. This passive heating/cooling technique helps the cabins store solar heat gains during colder seasons and allows access heat to escape during the warmer seasons.

TOWERS TO TOWNSHIPS Johannesburg, South Africa Goal: To investigate urban segregation and how it shaped the city of Johannesburg. Approach: Through a series of mappings and collages, I am exploring the histories and conditions of highly populated Black neighborhoods in Johannesburg. Although apartheid has largely been abolished since the 1990’s, spatial segregation is still evident across different townships. There are three townships in particular that have interesting histories and built conditions: Soweto, Diepsloot, and Alexandra. Part of an ongoing Guaduate Studio - Spring 2021

47

48

SOWETO Population: 2-3 Million Soweto is a bustling neighborhood with a lively market culture and family-like community. Created by the white government in the 1930’s to separate black away from white suburbs, the township symbolises the political struggles of poverty and segregation. The struggles for democracy and equality were heightened in 1976 in the Soweto Uprisings in which Black African students protested to have equal rights as their white counterparts. They refused to conform to schools that taught in both Afrikaans and English. “Afrikaans is the language of the oppressor”, stated Desmond Tutu, Bishop of Johannesburg.

49

Although Soweto is accommodating of all social classes, there have been attacks from the poor against the middle class, who have recenty constructed residential areas to build a more affluent part of the town. There is a steadily growing black middle class in which families choose to remain in Soweto instead of relocating to more prosperous white neighborhoods in Johannesburg. These families choose to stay in Soweto because they enjoy the culture and want to stay in the community. Criticism arises from lower income individuals in the community who call these middle class residents “coconuts” - black on the outside but white on the inside.

ALEXANDRA Population: 700,000 Alexandra, or Alex, was established in 1912. There are many issues that hinder the lives of the residents of Alex. The overcrowding and poor infrastructure of the township causes problems such as poor sanitation, and overloaded sewerage systems. Because of the haphazard planning of backyard shacks that are oftentimes built over sewer lines and manholes, there are few access points in the township for maintenance. On top of living in a segregated community with poor infrastructure and maintenance, residents fear the infestation of large disease ridden rats.

DIEPSLOOT Population: 350,000 Diepsloot township was established in 1994 as a transit camp for people who had been removed from a squatter camp a bit south. As time progressed, the transit camp became a permanent home for many families. Diepsloot is notoriously known for being one of the most dangerous settlements in Johannesburg. Crime runs rampant, and there is little police presence in the community. There is an abundance of garbage and sewage that fill the streets of Diepsloot. There has been a recent attempt to improve the sanitary conditions of the township. An organization called Donate-A-Loo has worked to donate safer outdoor toilets to an elementary school in Diepsloot. Their goal is to restore improvement and dignity in the lives of children so that they can shape a better future for themselves and for society.

HAND SKETCHES Europe During my year abroad, I had the opportunity to travel to over 14 cities in Europe. These sketches are a showcase of some of the breathtaking historical buildings that I got to visit. Some buildings, like the majestic Opera de Monte Carlo were constructed in the late 19th century while others such as the Pantheon in the Rome have construction dating back to the early 2nd century. All sketches were drawn on site with pen.
