Dress appropriately

Always dress for the weather conditions and keep the terrain of the walk in mind, particularly if you are walking in marshland, moors or riverways. Always pack a high visibility jacket for both you and your dog as well as a flashing collar in case the light drops. Depending on the location, always pack provisions and think about packing an emergency kit.

Water is one of the most basic provisions that both you and your pooch need.

Check the weather

Always check the local weather reports and plan your route according to the forecast, especially in mountainous terrains.

Know the route

Always tell someone where you’re going in case there is a problem and you get lost. Always look at your route before setting off, even if you’re only going around the corner.

Pack the essentials

Pack the following: mobile phone, water, poo bags, lead, collar (with tags), bowl and a whistle (if used).

Shoal Hill common

The shoal hill is a great expanse of land for free running - but watch out for horses

A readers favourite, the Shoal Hill common is a rural patch of hillside located on the B5012 between Cannock and Penkridge. There are car parks all along the road, however the main car park can be accessed via Cocksparrow Lane. The area has 73 hectares of lowland heath and woodland with some incredible viewpoints. Used by horse riders who favour the long gallop tracks, the common is a perfect place to let your dog run through a different type of terrain.

Go on, stop for a cuppa at a visitors centre

Brindley Heath Situated on Lady Hill in between Cannock and Rugeley, the Birches Valley centre is a hive for dog walkers and cyclists alike. Home to the Cannock Chase annual live music festival, Birches Valley is in the heart of the woodland. There are numerous trails to follow and even rest areas, including an independent café that serves both hot and cold food.

Westport Lake Wesport Lake is one of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s two visitors centres. Set in a haven for wildlife, this visitors centre is perfect for a quiet afternoon stroll with your pet. The main lake is surrounded by a level footpath, which provides a great opportunity to spot waterfowl and fish. Dogs must be kept on a lead. Marquis Drive A great retreat for the family when walking, this centre is set in the heart of fields with rental barbecues, playgrounds and forestry. The cafe is open and supplies hot and cold food. Horse rider? There’s even a hitching rail.

canals

Staffordshire is home to a number of canals including the following: Caldon Canal, Coventry Canal, Shropshire Union Canal, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and Trent and Mersey Canal. Canals provide a great stroll for both you and your dog and most junctions are kitted out with a pub or bar along the way. However, ensure that your dog is confident around water.

the roaches

As of 2011, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust manages the county segment of the Peak District National Park.

The 975 acre estate, near Leek, is to be overseen by the nature charity for 125 years starting in 2013.

As a popular place for climbers and walkers, the estate is a perfect place to spend a day out, whether it’s scouting out the infamous Valkyrie climbing wall or keeping your eye out for the pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons that were introduced in 2009.

The Roaches is definitely a camera spot, you might even be luck enough to spot one of the walllabies that were introduced here in the 1930’s.

Wolseley Bridge The sister site to Westport Lake, however this centre has its own boardwalk and natural play trail surrounding the gardens. Children will love the sensory field and welly splash, but make sure your dog is on a lead due to cattle. www.staffordshiredoglife.co.uk Staffordshire Dog Life May 2012
